Ok, this is what I'm worried about...

■An eligible data plan for iPhone is required. This data plan does not cover international data usage and charges. AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee.

I spoke with a neighbor who works for AT&T and he said swapping devices is fine even from one account to another.

I am using my step-father's upgrade to purchase my phone (he has his own account and I am a user as I manage for it him and my mother's)

I will activate the phone on my account following the normal procedure.

I will then call in to a CSR and explain that the phone has been swapped and to make sure that the correct IMEI's are active.

I should be fine. I hope!

That's kind of my plan after reading all of the info in this thread. Activate the new 3Gs on the line it was purchased, following AT&T recommendation.

Then call and explain the swap to my account/sim and have the other account holder call separately to swap their account back to the current original iPhone until I can give her my old 3G. At which time she can activate that phone.

I see no reason why this won't work since we are both AT&T account holders and keeping AT&T in the loop regarding which IMEI should be with which account. Any other suggestions?

I would only activate the Iphone on the line that you want it on. Don't bother activating the phone on two accounts. Call and explain to a CSR. I would also make sure that you are a user on both accounts as this will allow you to do everything on one call with one CSR.

I think this is contrary to what saDeRmac recommended...

I have spoken with several different customer care reps and they have all told me to do it this way, my neighbor included. What exactly does Sadermac want us to do?

I believe he wants us to activate on the line we used the upgrade on THEN switch SIMs.

I just got back from my local AT&T store and, of course, it worked just like saDeRmac said it would. I just wanted to add my thanks to this thread.

FWIW, I asked the Rep if my pre-order guaranteed me a phone on the 19th. He said that he couldn't absolutely guarantee it, but that they had been told they could anticipate having enough phones to cover pre-orders.

I am assuming this will work just the same if I order from the apple online store. Anyone?

I don't want to get stuck with another iPhone data plan on my Family Plan.

I think saDeRmac suggested that it was best to go to an AT&T retail store. As I have understood the thread so far, they would do the swapping for you at the store prior to adding the plan. That prevents you from running any risk of a pro-rated plan charge on the line not using the data plan.

What happens in 2010 when I want to upgrade again?

So I'm planning on doing the upgrade swap, but what happens in June 2010 when I want to upgrade again? Does the upgrade swap reset my eligible upgrade time to 18 months, or does it not affect my upgrade status at all?

This would probably affect whether I go through with the swap at all since the 3GS isn't really that much better than my 3G.

Thanks

Another question - what will happen to the old iPhone 3G if I decide to do the upgrade swap? Will it still be usable as a phone, or at least an iPod, or it's just going to be a heavy paperweight? I assume if it does work, it would be screwed up if I do a low level restore on it, as I think it require activation?

So... if you swap phones is this going to remove or change the upgrade eligibility for the person who receives the swap?

I want to swap a 3GS from a new line to my older one, use it until 7/12 and then get my iPhone once I am eligible for an upgrade... but if I switch the 3GS to the line eligible on 7/12 is it going to remove the upgrade for that line?

Your old 3G will still be able to be used. Although to upgrade your software you must put an active AT&T SIM into the phone before upgrading/restoring.

I believe he wants us to activate on the line we used the upgrade on THEN switch SIMs.
Precisely. Again this is if you pre-ordered online to your home. In the store there is a chance that there would be no need to use the pre-installed sim.

This will not effect the upgrade eligibility although the system tends to add a contract to the line (which can be fixed if an issue).

As always fellow rumorists please don't hesitate to PM me with specific questions.

saDeRmac, adding a line to my family account question

saDeRmac,

First, like everyone else, I want to say thank you for all of the time you've spent helping iPhone fans better understand our options. I don't want to knock AT&T again and again, but there are wild variances in what people hear when they go to the stores and then report back on these forums and all of the mis-information or partial information is confusing to put it mildly.

Now, my issue/questions. My wife and I both have 3G iPhones on a family plan. We'd like to bring her mother onto our plan from Verizon. I see this as a way to get the 3G S for my use...sign up mom for a 2 yr contract and get the new phone. Then I'll swap the phones, my 3G iPhone for her 3G S iPhone.

Trouble is, the 3G iPhone is huge overkill for her and I'll confuse her greatly if I try and get her setup to use the it.

Once I've swapped my 3G for her 3G S in the COR store, can I at some later date get out my old AT&T Samsung flip phone and then swap SIMs from it to the 3G iPhone so that mom can go back to using a phone she's comfortable with? AND, can I then drop the data on her plan?

Ideally, I want to end up with mom on my plan, me with the 3G S, her with my old Samsung (w/out data) and I'll have the 3G iPhone to sell or give to my son as an iPod.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks again!

Everything that your telling me sounds like a good idea and it will work. One thing you should do is just read this thread again and it should tell you exactly what to do!

Any other questions just PM me.

I think you only need to bring your sim card in

First I want to thank

saDeRmac, thank you very much for your advice and help... I went into the store today and spoke with roger a rep I've known for some time. I told him I wanted to Upgrade Swap and he asked if I had a line available for upgrade... I said yes... He said... Cool we can do that... So he ordered my 32gb black on the eligible line and said he would call me when it comes in and he would upgrade swap it for me...

Thanks again...

For anyone interested in this... just go in... ask for an upgrade swap and they'll know what you mean

nah... You dont need your iPhone on Launch day.

Do we need to do anything to make sure our old phones can be sold or swapped to someone else after we activate our new ones? Can we pretty much sell them immediately and the buyer has no issues activating them?
