The audacity! Just wait until that watch drops and watch swatch and just about every other clown fall over themselves to catch up.

Thanx. That was what I was going for. But you get my point.

Really, I just wanted to reiterate your opinion. It's fairly amusing that mister Swatch has chosen to go on the record and naysay. Because it didn't work for Swatch/MS, it won't work for Apple? Success is not guaranteed by the concept alone. Implementation, timing, brand, advertising, infrastructure all play a role. Mr Swatch doesn't want to see Apple succeed where he failed.

On the other hand, it is hard to imagine a smart watch outstripping the smart phone market. If Apple are considering an entry int the smart watch market, they will do so as a part of their revenue pie without the expectation that it till eat into the other pieces.

Bigger than RIM at it's peak? Back then, RIM had millionaire financiers, major corporate execs, entertainment A-listers, even a few heads of state addicted to their product. Did that maintain RIMs status among big spenders today?

And Nokia was even bigger worldwide.

You have no idea what you're talking about. RIM was a direct competitor that underestimated Apple. They're paying for that mistake. Swatch, no matte what shape the rumored iWatch ultimately takes, is not a competing with Apple. Unless of course the iWatch is actually a mechanical watch, Apple employ watchmakers, are in the process of designing their own in-house movement and are planning to sell the iWatch for 5k+. Then Swatch might be worried. A little.

I mean seriously, this is like saying the iWatch is going to destroy BMW because BMWs have little clocks on the dashboard. It's an absurd comparison.

At a press conference in Grenchen, Switzerland, Hayek implied that an Apple smart watch would be a flop because of its small display size.

hmmm sounds very reminiscent of Steve Balmer saying who wants a phone without a keyboard...

I'm not saying an iWatch would work but I've learned never to judge the creative minds of Apple before you see and experience the product :)

Read the thread, read my posts, and don't talk about stuff you're obviously unfamiliar with. The iWatch wouldn't compete with Swatch's products.

I just thought I would have to comment on this story, as a massive fans of Apple and also Watches.

I love Apple for what they have done with so many items, I never thought I would need an iPod, I got one and loved it.

The same for the iPhone, in fact I remember thinking how could this work and couldnt see the fuss, then I used one and it became a 'must have' within a few moments

I am happy to admit my mistakes about these items but seriously, I am a 32 year old man, it may be great to have a 'iWatch' that connects to my iPhone and MBP or iPad and offers a range of apps etc but hand on heart I could not ever imagine trading in my watch (Ironically a 'Longines' - which falls under the Swatch brand) for a proposed iWatch

I agree with people who have said a watch is a fashion statement, I also agree that Apple is also a fashionable item to an extent but I just fail to see why anyone (for arguments sake) who owns a watch worth more than £500 or $700 dollars would see an iWatch as a realistic purchase unless Apple surpass everything else and come up with an absolute game changing app that is a complete must have

To summarise, I have do doubt it will appeal to a lot of people, but not as many as everyone seems to think and I think definitely not for me*

*Willing to return in 6 months and admit my errors...again

Spot on. And even then, those people who plunked down several thousand or in some cases several ten thousand bucks for their mechanical watch might still get the iWatch as an afterthought. They wouldn't even think of it as a "watch", but rather as a gadget that complements their iDevices.

otherwise I could simply wear a beautiful watch on my wrist without a battery in it, and pull my iPhone out of my pocket when I wanted to know the time, because wearing a watch was fashionable and said to people, "look at my wealth and status."

im happy that you finally understood the point of a watch;)

Trust me.

This is the core about the new iwatch.

Integrated ID-form and payment. BIG!
Pulse calculator
Voice controlled
Muscle controlled. Make a fist or stretch.
iPod. Wireless headphones only.
Phone
Remote for your I-devices
GPS
Fingerprint tech

*******!! I just spent half an hour writing a great reply to the seven comments posted towards me, and it just got erased because my connection timed out.

**** you MacRumors..

"Real men"? What the **** is that supposed to mean? Are you saying that since I don't feel the need to blow large amounts of perfectly good money on a limited-function trinket for snobs I'm not a "real man"? Because last I checked I have a penis, and that's a rather major qualifier. (Not to mention, plenty of women I know wear watches, so you don't have to be a man, "real" or otherwise.)

Someone needs to tone back the snobbery.

Well, women have all sorts of jewelry. Men have only one. Their watches. Back to the subject, an electronic device can never replace that mechanical tick-tock.

Some features that might be cool in a watch with a small(ish) display:
Calendar that syncs with your iCal
Music player
GPS
Compass

Making a smart watch may turn out challenging because people don't want to charge their watches every day, but the device must still be powerful enough to do some smart stuff.

Energy collection from body movement, body heat and sun light would be awesome.

I don't think the CEO of swatch has seen a Diesel watch. Those things are like a gauntlet and even more comfortable than traditional watches. You could fit a huge display on the wrist that is still comfortable. I have a couple friends that work for Apple at the headquarters that wear those kind of watches.

BTW, a cell phone replaced my last watch in 1997.

Watches need to be reinvented as people don't need them to show the time.

*Calendar that syncs, yes not bad but not enough to make me want it
*Music player, could work - although someone mentioned wireless headphones obviously forgets Apple havent even got this for an iPod, let alone an iWatch
*Gps - handy, but I have this on my iphone 5
*Compass, on my iPhone 5

Any ideas what could make this the must have Watch.....???

Of course it can't replace a phone. Its a watch. Will never be able to do what a smartphone can.

You think Swatch is going anywhere? They're the largest watch company in the world, and they make some of the best watchs in the world. I highly doubt they'll go anywhere.

You wanted to say "largest watch holding company", right? because it owns some brands and watch companies. Then it is not Swatch but Swatch group.

To remind you, the name stands for "second watch", not "swiss watch" as many think. Swatch is infamous for diminishing and in some cases ruining Swiss respectable watch market into cheap plastic disposable nonsense.

to see gps, compass, calendar and the rest on the go, without necessity to get iphone out of the pocket. how about that?
