I'm assuming you are on a Mobile Share Plan. I still have unlimited data, therefore I do not get the $15/$25 a month discount. Apple is cheaper than AT&T Next for me.

Correct.

I rotate phones and switch eligibility between two lines.

I was one of the few that called ATT when Verizon started their Double your Data promotion several months ago. I had a 10gb plan, and ATT matched the Verizon offer giving me 20gb @ the 10gb rate. With mobile share rollover data and WiFi everywhere, I usually start with about 25-30gb(which comes to 5-10gb added to my account monthly) of data a month. No idea the quantity of data you use, but unlimited would be nice.

It's funny how in the cellular industry we used to pay per minute just to talk on the phone. Now it's pretty much unlimited free for all without prime hours of 7am-7pm. In the meantime data went from unlimited to price per block of GBs. Go figure.

Questions

I need to get two 6s and one 6s Plus. My whole life buying iPhones I used the AT&T 2 year program but now wonder if the Apple plan is better.
My goal is to keep the phones for two years and either sell or give away.
Which options would be better for my situation?
Thanks for any feedback!!!

Well you cannot purchase a two year contract from Apple. That is AT&T only. So your choices for Apple.com are: Pay full price, sign up for AT&T Next or reserve for iPhone program in store.

If you are going to upgrade in a year, is there any advantage to having AppleCare as the standard iPhone warranty is 1 year?

Well over the standard 1 year AppleCare you get the benefits of Plus. Meaning you get accidental damage protection.

In addition to that, you also get free "express replacements." So if you can't or don't want to go to Apple Store for warranty or the accidental damage replacements, you can get one sent do you via FedEx (with a hold on credit card for full value), and then ship your bad one back once you get it.

Without Applecare, if they let you do an "express" replacement, it costs $19.99 or $29.99 shipping.

You aren't comparing apples to apples

Next 12 is the (Phone MSRP)/20 where you can upgrade every 12 months
Apple Upgrade is (Phone MSRP)/24 where you can upgrade every 12 months

Next 12: 849/20= $42.45
Next 18: 849/24 = $35.38
Next 24: 849/30 = $28.30

Apple: 849/24 = $40.75

After 12 months
Next 18: $424.56
Apple Upgrade: $486

Apple Upgrade will cost you $64.44 more after 12 months or $128.88 after 24 months.

Assuming you normally purchase applecare ($99.00), you will pay $29.88 more with Apple Upgrade to enjoy an unlocked phone on day 1 vs day 731.

Applecare is $129
