NO WAY will it be announced and out the next day. There needs to be an FCC filing, and even Apple can't hide that.

They might release it a month to two months later, basically as soon as they can, but they're going to have to let the cat out of the bag because every rumor site in America would be spreading "Apple iPhone 3G" FCC reports right now otherwise.

Apple could have easily done something to keep the info from being released. I just think they can release it in May/ June and if not then it would be early august/late july because of the 6-8 week filing time.

This has been debunked, on the front page. They can keep FCC filings secret until they are ready to announce.

Is there anyway that the whole FCC filing thing is a hoax, and they can in fact keep it a secret. I can see Apple doing this to create buzz the first time around, for a good 6 months without everyone getting pissed at them. Because what did they have to lose by announcing the first phone. There was no need to sell an outdated phone. Then this time around they just pop the iPhone^2 out there throwing everyone off, gaining previous days sales and current days sales.

The earnings call info puts the Software 2.0 release in late June.
Would Apple announce the 3G iPhone in May, show in WWDC 10th June, then ship before 2.0 Software?

Or would they wait to ship with 2.0 Software on?

Atom looks less likely to an extent, given Apples cash & carry buy this week.

That is an interesting question t0mat0. I have wondered about this myself. Possible that they ship with 1.9 or something like that. Loading firmware into a production run of 500K phones/week would be quite a chore.

Even if 2.0 ships in late June, the FW would need to be ready weeks, if not months, in advance. I wouldn't be suprised to see a lower rev on the phone (if released before late June).

And the new 3G iPhones can be updated to the latest rev ?

Seeing as you'd need to get the phone set up via iTunes anyhow, they could just pipe the update through to itunes to push onto the iPhone when they come out presumably. It'd be a nicer user experience to have it ready. Hard to tell - would it be better to have it before the Apps store and then have the buzz of waiting / finding you've got 2.0 Software coming out?

The thing is, there is hardware and software in the 3G iPhone that isn't in the EDGE only handset. There would have to be a different OS to run the 3G iPhone anyway. I'm leaning more into Apple having a locked down OS ready either on the phone or ready for download as soon as you initialise it via iTunes.

I'm not an expert in the matter, but surely with the iPhone OS being touted as a light version of OSX, it stands to reason that the software would be the same for each phone, and different drivers would be used depending on hardware requirements.

Yes, I think that is the way it would work.

The firmware would detect the hardware installed and run the appropriate drivers (or whatever they would be called). While the hardware is different, SGOLD2 and SGOLD3 are very similar.

Similar to a Macbook and an iMac. Different drivers are loaded, but you are using the same Leopard disk to install it from.

Aye - my point was that they have to at some point update the install disk from Tiger to Leopard so to speak. It looks like the SDK is mutating slowly to do that, and I imagine as you say, there will be one OS come late June, that is backwards compatible with EDGE only current generation handsets.

I think there isn't going to be a new iPhone until the Fall or Winter. With 2.0 coming out and all the developments of the SDK, Apple will be able to build and sell many first gen units that will ride the wave of interest generated by those events. I look for them to let that wave subside instead of announcing 2 major iPhone-centric releases at the same time. I don't think they need the impact of a new phone with the app store and 2.0, but rather they will go for the sustained momentum of spacing them out throughout the years so they can surpass their aggressive 10 million iPhones sales goal.

Granted, I'm a little jaded because I just upgraded from a Touch to an iPhone yesterday. With my luck the new model will come out on the 15th day after my purchase!

Unfortunately for you, all signs are pointing to June. Look at all the page 1 and page 2 iPhone rumors. Hope you consider that the fall.

But seriously, if you are happy with your new iPhone, I wouldn't worry too much. You will be able to take advantage of many of the phones features and all the new applications coming out. EDGE speed is in the eye of the beholder.

Nope. Apple made it *very* clear that the 10 million in this year was their target or higher. It was also made clear that they were tapering down production. It was sid inthe Earnings call. Why would they be ramping up in May, but not selling for 4 months?? The wave has already subsided in Europe. The next wave is 3G and Europe isn't biting, unless there is 3G or more large price cuts.
