Hey folks,
Both my wife and I are on the grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T, though our service has degraded so much that I’m greatly contemplating moving to Verizon.

Any suggestions as to how I can try the service with Verizon on an unlocked “any carrier” iPhone 6? I hate to open an account and have my credit hit just to try them, though I’ve heard that the pre-paid service isn’t as good as post-paid.

Any suggestions are welcome! Both of us have iPhone X’s now and can move carriers as we are members of the IUP.

Verizon prepaid has the same coverage as post paid, but data speeds will take a hit when the network is congested because from what I understand prepaid customers get deprioritized first.

What has degraded specifically. I have been on ATT for a long time and coverage is better in the areas we use the iPhones in. That's key. Your areas may to better with Verizon/TMobile. Mine aren't. And we travel and have better reception there than relatives on Verizon. Customer service, for me, has always been very good.

As mentioned above, switching providers might not be a big improvement, so, try some pre-paid before switching for real.

For example, where I live, every carrier is on the same two towers, and neither have great line of sight. ATT and Verizon both have lousy signal and will go "No Service" from time to time. A friends house, no signal on any carrier, and this is in the middle of a dense residential neighborhood.

Ah! Good advice. I could care less about the speed during a trial period! Thanks!

What did AT&T do to degrade your service?

It’s not that they degraded our service. Rather, the service has always been so/so in our area. My wife doesn’t get any service at work (she never has) and my service has been declining for about a year. I’ve called and tried doing some tech work with them and haven’t gotten anywhere. I call other friends and family in this area and they too have poor service. If you walk into a building (say a mall or grocery) then you can count on the bars dropping to one. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dropped calls lately.

Also - on my drive home I can count on dropping a call on I-75 (major interstate on the east coast). Today I noticed that my phone dropped to one bar 3 times on the highway.

Don't, try talking to an AT&T rep about the situation of worsening coverage. There are rebates tat can be applied to monthly bills.

Also, where do you gives live (general area/city). Some cities do tend to favour AT&T more than others, but most of those spotty coverages were fixed with LTE deployment.

Get ready to be nickel and dimed for services you already enjoy. Most of Verizon’s plans cost 10 to $20 more than AT&T, they’ll also want $5 for a useable caller id. Otherwise caller id will list everyone as wireless caller. As far as better coverage, it is possible, but their cdma is going away this year.

Something AT&T already did away with. They already shut down their 2G/EDGE networks and are running on either HSPA+ or LTE. 5G, which is an extention to LTE technologies is a semi-soft upgrade for LTE, so this should place AT&T at a much better advantage than Verizon in coverage and speeds.

no right answer as to which carrier is better
It depends where you use the phone, what you are doing on the phone (games, texting, talking ) if the service works good in the areas where you use the phone then the service is good. As for price, they’re comparable. It’s a give and take. One carrier offers one thing and the other carrier offers the other rhing

agree.

For myself, sorry I switched from AT&T to Verizon. My Apple Watch S3 LTE hates the big V.

I’ve already compared costs. Our two grandfathered UDP on AT&T cost the same as the new “unlimited” plans on Verizon.

This is probably when our LTE coverage started to suffer. One must have a 5G compatible device to get a 5G signal. Even if one does, it takes awhile for them to deploy it to all major cities.

What good are rebates if you’re still dropping calls?
[doublepost=1515549789][/doublepost]I suggest trying out prepaid for whatever service provider you’re contemplating. Even if you don’t get first priority on data you can at least get a feel for the reception coverage you’ll have.

I have no idea what rebates they are talking about. I’m getting a pre-paid sim and will see how that works.

So I received the Verizon SIM card today. Believe it or not, it works in my iPhone X. No idea how!?!?!?!!!!

Model number A1865 on the X? That's the Verizon/unlocked version of the phone. Can see an unlocked ATT phone working as well, but, will go No Service if needs to switch from LTE to CDMA.

if its coverage you are most concerned with you might want to ask people who live in the same area and who have verizon to see how they fare. Or try with a prepaid sim card and test.

btw to make you feel better, I live in the boonies and over here if i can get 2 bars i am happy. And at&t is the only one that has semi decent coverage. Believe or not Verizon is the worst around these parts. However whenever we travel out of town we always see people with verizon consistently have better service than us.

Depends where u got the iPhone X

If u got it direct from att corporate store or Apple. Than it’s the Intel gsm only iPhone X.

But if u got it via third party resellers (target, Best Buy walmart Sams club etc). Those third party sellers only carry the universal Qualcomm iPhone X that they use to activate the phone on all carriers (sprint Verizon att)

By any chance you know the model number for the unlocked phone?

I'm on a Verizon pre-paid plan and have so far not found any disadvantage to it. All the same features (Tethering, Visual Voicemail, Wi-Fi calling, Verizon user app, Excellent coverage, etc. etc.) as the post-paid plans. I have the 3 GB/mo data plan with unlimited text and phone for $40 per month, which I feel is reasonable. Their 7 GB plan is $50. Bought the phone directly from Apple.

I have the 7 gig plan and have absolutely no issues with service, dropped calls, etc. And don't forget you get rollover with the prepaid plans as well. With the 7 gig plan I always have 10 plus gigs every month to use. I'm mostly on wifi so not a heavy data user but it's nice to have it when/if I should need it.

But you should. Degraded speeds out of the gate would not allow you to evaluate the performance of the network. You'd never know if its the prepaid plan or poor reception.
