No, you have to be "referred" within a month of signing up.

Okay, is anyone else having trouble with referrals? I just referred someone and I got the referral Denied because "Referrer (that's me) canceled account."

What? There's no way that's the case considering my account is open, active and I'm making calls from it.

On the phone with CS now to find out what's going on.

EDIT: Okay, Apparently if you were on the AT&T Refer a Friend program BEFORE you got a 3G iPhone, this problem can happen. It has something to do witht he way they renew contracts, according the rep, "it's complicated." Only way to solve the problem is to sign up on the site AGAIN with a new account and start over.

Anyway, for my trouble, the AT&T rep credited my account $25 right then and there, and said the same should happen for the guy whose referral was denied. So, if you're that guy who PMed me, call customer care and let them know what happened! You should get a credit to your account.
