Wait for the Pre. I think Apple was caught with their pants down this time. I expect huge dissappointment with whatever huge update that will be coming from Apple. Six months is just too little too late for catching up.

How was Apple "caught with their pants down," exactly?" They're not going to change their product's update cycle just because Palm, of all companies, announces a new product. No doubt whatever advantages (if any) the Pre has when it is released will be blown away when the new iPhone is announced in June. Not to mention any new functionality that will come with the next software update.

Man i just really dont get why people change phones so often. When I get one I know ill be keeping it until its either broken or just too outdated to serve much of a purpose anymore, like I do with a computer.

Are they like fashion things now?

Heh. You sound more like you're 50, rather than your actual 17 years.

Yep, they can be fashion accessories nowadays. Heck, a lot of people stopped wearing watches and just use their phone.

When do you plan on getting your first cell phone? What will it be, do you think?

The Bold is a brilliant smartphone. GPS, 3G speed, chic leather back, and the level of performance you expect from a BlackBerry.

BB maps stinks and its browser sometimes is a bit lacking. You'll want to download google maps and the opera browser. Mobileshark supports tethering for a one time fee. And of course there is twitterberry, facebook, myspace, and all your other favorite sites and messaging networks.

The Storm will be out on AT&T and T-Mobile likely in time to keep you away from the next iPhone, and a slide out keyboard model is rumored. That Palm Pre will be lucky to be remembered in two years.

The Storm is a PoS, I'm afraid...

Highly doubtful. Any firmware inside info or leaks to back up your claim? Apple can't even figure out copy and paste or get PUSH running. That was announced back several months ago. With no explanation from Apple on why is delayed. That fact alone tells you that Apple is seriously behind the eight ball with the iPhone OS and core applications.

It's funny how everyone is making such a big deal of the Pre when it hasn't even been released... This is Palm by the way - notorious for making PDAs that were unreliable and crash prone. I agree with you that Apple will simply up the ante to blow it away (if it is any good to start with.....)

This is not old Palm. They have a real game changer here.

Yeah, but they had a "game changer" with the Foleo too. They could have made a real impact on the subnotebook/netbook market, and look how that turned out...

Palm Pre - did you all actually saw how the phone works ? Looks great, even if it will be a fail, it's an attempt in the right direction. But anyway thanks for comments, after which I'm considering Nokia e71 now :).

Any proof on this? I'm just haven't hear anything like that. Just wondering because it would be great to have choice. Thanks.

iPhone has the commercial buzz of the Razr, good luck ever catching that.

With that said, it isn't the iPhone that Apple should be worrying about, it is the next generation iPod and iPhone that they have yet to create.

Bad analogy. Look what happened to the Razr.... stagnant, dead.

I don't need any leaks or inside info. Everyone is chasing Apple in the "smart phone" business and everyone wants to release the iPhone killer. There is a laundry list of would-be iPod and iPhone killers and none of them can do it.

As soon as Apple releases an iPhone that's dubbed the "Pre Killer" then you'll know they are behind the eight ball.

That's not the point, where Motorola failed has been properly noted, and Apple should never walk down the same path.

Razr's success is unquestionable, and iPhone has the same buzz that Razr once had.

Old soul I guess....

I'll get one when either I can pay for it myself or my dad decides to finally add me to the family plan (for some reason I'm the only one not on it, even my twin sister is). It will probably be the cheap one you get for free. I won't use it for anything other than talking as I HATE texting, so yea itll suit me fine.

The all-GSM Storm is out on o2 and release in the states should be late q1 or early q2. There was a leaked chart from rim on gizmondo three weeks ago.

Heh. That wasn't a game changer. Even Palm recognized, albeit far too late in product development to save themselves some incredible embarrassment, that they had strayed down the wrong path. Between that utter fiasco and their OS issues, they just about went under.
The Pre looks to be a good phone, a solid competitor for the iPhone. I .like the BB Bold as well, much more so than the Storm, which I admit I've only played with in the store. All this competition is good. It will drive all manufacturers, not just Apple, towards better products.
As a consumer, I don't care who has the best phone as long as I reap some benefit from all the rigorous product development that results from the competition.

I have to agree with this. There is already a handful of phones currently on the market that beat the iPhone hands-down on paper and these have not changed Apple's iPhone features/functions. Apple has had plenty of time to change the iPhone due these phones that have many more functions and they have not - so I don't expect them to this time around. The only way Apple will actively change the restrictions on the iPhone is if another phone comes out that is clearly out-selling the iPhone. This may happen when the Pre is introduced, but not not before it is.

As for an iPhone replacement, I'd recommend the Nokia E71. It's 3G (3.5G actually), is much thinner and lighter than the iPhone, has awesome battery life, supports three or four different types of "push" e-mail (including IMAP IDLE), uses microSD for expandable storage, supports H.264 and AAC, and has an actual keyboard with a predictive autocorrect that doesn't make me loathe the phone. App installation isn't as integrated of a process, but it's pretty damn easy. I can sync it wirelessly via Bluetooth, or tether it via Bluetooth or USB (both supported, manufacturer-sanctioned features.)
...
I'll write up a detailed review/comparison some time, but suffice it to say that if you can deal with a non-Apple device and a slightly smaller screen, the Nokia E71 beats the iPhone pretty solidly in a lot of areas.

I'd love to hear what you have to say about the E71. (PM me if you dont want to post a Nokia review here) I'm extremely torn between the E71 and BlackBerry Bold. I had a BB before the iPhone and really liked it, but I "had" to get the iPhone 3G. Well, the honeymoon period is over, and I'm looking for a more full featured smartphone that can do, you know, smartphone-like things.

It seems like everyday I'm going back and forth on the Nokia and BB.

Oh, and I'm still on MR because all of my complaints are firmware related. If suddenly Apple releases 2.3 with copy/paste, system-wide search, unified email inbox, custom sounds for everything, ability to save attachments to the phone/send from the phone, edit docs, etc.... then I have no need to switch :)
