What other $400 brand new phone would you recommend for your family that will be better in 3 years?
None, but the question is this:
Are you better served replacing your phone every other year and spending $400 or are you better off spending the $750 for an iPhone XR and keeping it for four years?

For me, the former is preferred. For my family? Hard to tell. I think a lot of them would prefer to not switch phones.

Phones less than a year old don't slow down because of hardware. They don't. They slow down because of software. If pixel slows down with nearly stock android it means
  • The cause of the slowdown is likely in every android phone
  • add-on software doesn't help
And, with all due respect, this is a Pixel 3A thread. If the Pixel 3 is slowing down after 6 months, there is no way the 3A outlasts it without major software revisions.
There are people using note 8’s that haven’t slowed down and they are almost 2 years old. My husband’s note 8 hasn’t slowed down.

This probably isn’t the thread for you then. Take care.
How is it not?

The question is "Do you replace a three year old device with a Pixel 3a?". If you're replacing a three year old device and want to keep the replacement for the same three years (something I don't do, something I have a lot of experience with due to my family situation), I would buy an iPhone 8 over a Pixel 3 and try to stretch it to 3 or 4 years.

Samsung does an amazing job of letting the hardware cash a check for the software. They don't skimp.

If Samsung continues to improve on software updates, I might start recommending them. But again, we're going in with the premise that the phone being replaced is a 4 years old 6 or a 3 year old 6s.

If I knew the 10e would get software updates in a timely fashion in 3-4 years, I would definitely recommend it more often than I do.

funny, I also said this

But here's the thing; I don't think about phones the way you do. I spend most of my phone life recommending phones for family, for whom I provide tech support. I can't recommend the Pixel 3a for my in-laws simply because I don't know that processor and that 4 GB of RAM is going to be good in 3 years on Android.

Sorry, I don't know that I can be much nicer about Android at this point. If I had your budget for phones, maybe I could run both, but I don't. I need an iPhone for work.

Here's a list of things I don't like about my iPhone
  • Tyranny of the defaults
  • Moderate battery life
  • Siri is a joke
  • Photos is slow as hell to upload to the cloud so I still use Google Photos
  • The default email application is a joke
  • It is a pain in the ass to set up all the accounts you need and to explain to your in laws how to set up iOS
  • Apple services basically don't work with my work PC

Is that critical enough to meet your high standards? Shall I be more impartial?

I don't know when we suddenly became adversaries. It's too bad, though.
There’s a difference between saying that you can’t recommend this particular android phone than saying that all android phones are bloated and slow down over time.

Again, I said I would have to wait and see. The Pixel 3 is still less than a year old.

I would say the 10e, too, but again, the software situation is a little dicey for me to recommend.

And, for the record, did I say "They all slow down?"

That is the key point....this is the falsehood some project. It is an easy falsehood to fall back on to validate choices.

Doesn't matter. I had a SE back when it was released. It was snappy, battery was good, I loved the size, but two updates later, it wasn't the same phone I bought back in the day.

I know this is in the 6s section but I cant help calculating that in September I will have spent about $780 on the iPhone upgrade program to use my XS max for a year.

Or I could buy a new pixel 3a every year and spent $300-$400.. the upper mid range $750 phones aren’t as clear cut but it’s still almost double.

Man, that is so true. The friction I am getting from friends and family member is grueling!

Do you use all these phones at the same time? How does that work?

Not at the same time but it’s great to have choices in life. Depends how I feel that day.

Whether one wants to spend $400, $750 or $1500 is a personal decision based on individual factors. I decided the latter, people will decide for the former.

Well clearly people can do whatever they want. I did the same thing. I just have partial regret for doing that. Seeing the speed difference shows that you do get what you pay for and there are limitations to the 3a, just making me question my premium purchases.

Every Pixel had horrendous performance issues like lag and awful RAM management
thb, my old nexus 4 can still work!

That always bugs the crap out of me. I have no problem admitting that I miss the hell out of both my Pixel 3 and S10 but I just know that iOS is the right software for me.
same here
