I just received my imported iPhone from the US and unlocked it this morning to work with my T-Mobile SIM. I'm on a Flext tarrif with web n' walk.

I can confirm that I have the E in the status bar and after changing the APN settings to general.t-mobile.uk with user/pwd of user/wap everything is working perfectly. I can check email, surf the internet, install packages using AppTapp etc.

Very happy!

the thing is i think t mobile does have EDGE because there is a photo on engadget showing it :)

http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/18/hands-on-with-the-o2-iphone/

Also shows visual voicemail working too, which is exciting P:)

Hi all,

I came across this thread last night while trying to figure out if T-mobile would follow O2 in adding EDGE coverage... before I go on, pls forgive me if I repeat anything previously covered, as I'm trying to gather together all the info here...

I've got a BlackBerry 8800 on a T-mobile web 'n walk package - but while this gives me unlimited data usage in the UK, my experience (in London) is that its only accessible via GPRS (which sucks, as across Europe I get EDGE). So I'm very interested to read that some of you have picked up EDGE on T-mobile in the UK - and that the unlocked iPhone featured on engadget shows the 'E' (very cool, as I'm really keen on WiFi and Mobile Safari looks awesome!)

Given the evidence, is the general consensus that one could unlock an iPhone (either US or UK) and use it either fully or with limited EDGE on the T-mobile network? And if so, that actually it might be better to wait until the 3G version is available (assuming that if I inserted my unlimited web 'n walk sim into the unlocked 3G iPhone, it'll work at 3G speed)?

On a cheeky note: I'd be very keen to test my sim in an iPhone, if anyone wants to prove the theory. ;)

Just played about with the maps - works perfectly too.....just managed to zoom in on Tunbridge Wells :)

i don't understand. you are getting the E. so are engadget. but the t-mobile technical department assure me that they have no EDGE.

OK I just did a test - using AppTapp I downloaded a 1.9mb application.
It took 6 minutes to download so doing the maths that works out at 5.5kb/s or 44kbit/s - GPRS speed!
So I'm wondering whether the phone is detecting the edge network but needs a different APN to make it work?

i'm guessing that the GPRS speed is the best you're going to get because there is no EDGE on t-mobile even though iphone is displaying the E. just guessing though!

Very pleased to hear this. Please continue posting your findings so that we will know just how viable it would be to take the same route as you.

That sounds great and answer my lengthly question above. Have you had any luck with the visual voicemail?

No Visual Voicemail doesn't work but the voicemail button on the phone automatically updated with the number for t-mobile voice mailbox so voicemail works just like any other phone.
One thing I am noticing is that it seems to be a lot less sensitive when it comes to signal strength than my previous phone SE K800i.

Will continue assessing as I travel around different places!

By that do you mean it doesn't pick up and retain the signal as well as the K800i?

I'm interested in this too, as thats my current phone...

What do you think of this plan..

- Get contract with T-Mobile - Flext 35 + WebnWalk. This equates to 900min or 1800 texts (Its basically £180 credit each month to spend on a mix of texts and calls) with free weekend calls and unlimited internet data. This costs £37.50/month

- I will also get the N95 free with this, and then sell it to a friend or on eBay for £200 (covering the $400 cost of the iPhone)

- I can also add the wifi hotspots that are included in the crappy o2 packages for £6.99/mo direct from the Cloud's website

-This basically gives me the iPhone free on a better contract than o2 will give. To compare...

Wait for o2 iPhone = 6 week wait for launch, £269 for phone, £45/mo for 600min 500texs + unlimited data + wifi

Unlocked iPhone on t-mobile
= phone now for free, £44.99/mo for £180 credit (eg. equivalent to 600min + 600 texts) + free weekend calls + unlimited data + wifi

I have that same contract with T-mobile (but got a BlackBerry - for instant email) and am also planning to switch to an iPhone with it. I think it'll work out well. Just a note though: as the iPhone is always checking for email (like BlackBerry), it'd be worth checking whether or not you'll need to add the instant email option to your contract @ £5.00 extra per month.

Ok I see the settings but how do you put these into the iphone? Where do I go to set up my edge? My Edge options are just 3 basic lines. Can anyone help?
Thanks.
T-Mobile settings (found through Google) are different:
http://wap.t-mobile.co.uk/ or http://www.t-zones.co.uk/
GPRS APN address: general.t-mobile.uk
Gateway (IP) address :149.254.1.10 (alt: 149.254.201.132)
Username : user (alt: wapuser)
Password: wap
Session type: Continuous / permanent
Port number: 8080 (alt: 9201)
Authentication: Normal

SMTP email server: smtp.t-email.co.uk

I haven't read thru this whole thread, but I am using one on a T-Mobile PAYG sim.

I emailed them and was told the call cost per minute, and internet access max £1 per day for unlimited use.

They also emailed me these settings, direct from their customer service team, for EDGE access, and they seem to work fine, albeit slow.

IP Address 149.254.201.135
Username: user
Password; one2one
Port: 8080
APN: general.t-mobile.uk

I did not have to put in the IP or Port settings, could not find anywhere to type them anyway.

Wen n Walk Worth It?

So i was about to order a just Sim 20 from t-mobile (UK)
£20 for 300 mins/500 texts monthly rolling contract..

to add unlimited data i can get the web n walk add on for £7.50 extra per month.

my question for you current t-mobilers is, is the web n walk using the iPhone worth it?

do sites load with respectable speed? (ok, so its not 3G or broadband), but is it essentially GPRS speeds (ie, only useful for browsing WAP sites)?

i thought i would seek your advice first before i ordered one

thanks

I have just got my SIM card for a web 'n' walk contract with T-Mobile, seems to working fine. Like you said, it's not broadband but it's fast enough. It's displaying the edge symbol but as said before, dunno if it is actually connected to edge. I've only tested it in my home though, next time I'm out and about I'll be seeing what it's like!

I have my unlocked Iphone working on T-mob as well. I'm in Glasgow and like everyone else I do have the 'E' symbol but am not sure if it's EDGE or not.

Everything works flawlessly, browsing is a fair bit slower than it was on my N95 but then again I am browsing, full, proper web pages, not the 'baby internet' as SJ put it!

There are a few things that can be improved and added, i won't go into detail as they're discussed elsewhere.

Overall I can't complain, nothing is painfully slow.

Out of curiosity, what 'Edge' settings are you using?

I am using a PAYG T-Mobile sim. Works fine.

T-Mobile said that they use GPRS, which displays the E on the iPhone.

I was emailed these settings from them;
IP Address 149.254.201.135
Username: user
Password; one2one
Port: 8080
APN: general.t-mobile.uk

(not all typed in though).
