So its confirmed that the t-mobile 5S is actually factory unlocked but I just want to confirm that when buying from USA, do I have to start the phone in US with the t-mobile sim once to activate it or is that not necessary and I can bring the packed phone to my country and just use any local carrier nano sim and it will work perfectly?

Yes. It actually says on the web page.

"If you buy iPhone for T-Mobile, it will arrive with a nano-SIM card already installed that you can activate by visiting an Apple Retail Store or a T-Mobile store or by calling T-Mobile. When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5s from a local GSM carrier"

You can activate it with any SIM card in any country. It does not have to be the T-Mobile SIM.

This is not true. The instructions you posted is assuming you plan on using the provided T-Mobile SIM card. The T-Mobile iPhone purchased from Apple retail or website is factory unlocked and can be activated with ANY GSM SIM.

My iPhone 5S came with a T MObile SIM. So is this locked or unlocked?
I ordered it from apple.com

Guys! to stop this debate: I have bought a golden iPhone 5s last month from the Apple Store at full price/commitment free (the one where it says T-mobile).

I confirm: It IS unlocked. I'm using it now in Amman, Jordan.

It came with a T-Mobile nano SIM card in it, but you can just replace it with your carrier's SIM.

Blessings!

Hello, guys. I would love to get some help and suggestions if possible.
I am not from US, always wanted to get an iPhone. Last year i was travelling to US in October and the new model was not available without a contract. This year i went to US again....And went to apple stores in dallas, chicago and cincinnati. Same problem, not possible. My cousin found a guy selling a locked AT&T iPhone 5s and the guy said that he will unlock it. So i agreed.....it looks like he simply lied and the phone is locked.

Can you recommend something to unlock it so that I can use it with my local GSM network? Thank you for suggestions.

All Apple stores sell the iPhone 5s without a contract. Did you ask for "device only?"

In the store its was not available, they did not want to sell....i could never understand why. My cousin found a guy online who had att locked phone....it was grand new, when i met him. He took the sim out and said that he requested an unlock. Long story short....it was a lie. I do not know where did he buy it.

Yes, this has been known already.

All AT&T iPhone 5S bought full retail price and no contract are unlocked, if and only if you bought it from the Apple Store directly. That is what I did, and mine works with Tigo Honduras just fine.

Bought a AT&T device only from apple store directly, replaced the AT&T sim with another Sim and connected the phone to Itunes directly and got the message :-

"Congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked"

Hope this helps all who looking to buy an Unlocked iPhone from apple.

You can always go back to the apple store and return the phone back to them and get a full refund. (provided you check for the locked & unlocked status in the US itself)

I am not in US, purchased it from a private person.

If you bought the AT&T model full price (or at least the person who sold it to you did), then you can request an unlock from AT&T directly for free. You do have to either be a former customer, a current customer who bought full price or someone who paid the ETF and ended the contract to be eligible thou.

Ok, this I do not know. Is there a different way or i will never be able to use it?

I guess there are a few sites that can do a IMEI Unlock for a certain fees (but not really sure how true cause never used them). But at the moment if your phone is locked that's the only option which you can try.

The person who sold it to you lied. Have him contact AT&T and request an unlock. If he does not, dans a refund. Did you buy through eBay or PayPal? You can file a claim that he sold you false goods.

You can find out if your iPhone is an AT&T model. All you need is to check your IMEI status.

Many IMEI checkers will give you model, capacity and color. If it happens yours is an AT&T iPhone, you'll have to go online to request the unlock.

Based on all of this...I just picked up a ATT 64GB Full Price at an Apple Store.

I didn't reconnect it to iTunes and just inserted a non-ATT sim and it just worked. Then swapped out with T-Mobile and it worked too.

So just to add more evidence to those that say Full Price ATT bought from Apple and TMobile bought from Apple appear to be the same.
