I've never experience this. My recommendation is to check if dropping to 4G helps. I usually do that when I'm in a congested area but given your area and bars, I have a feeling theres something going on with the hardware you're interfacing with T-Mo with.

I've had nothing but great experiences with T-Mobile - but, I do say that as someone who left Sprint.
 
I travel frequently (esp to Plano, TX and NYC ), and have met more than many people who share the same.exact.experience as mine. And, T Mobile's indoor penetration, or lack thereof, is well documented all over the web ( esp Reddit ).

Surprisingly, T Mobile works great up in the mountains here in CO ( even better than Verizon or ATT. Sprint doesn't even count ) but blows a huge dong indoors.
Not saying it isn't possible, but blanket statements should not be used, because it isn't indicative of 'everyone'. I travel from southern California (Santa Barbara up to San Luis Obispo) to Dallas, TX to Mobile, Alabama and my coverage is great everywhere (I'm using an iPhone 11 Pro right now, but was using a Note 10 and they both utilize all the latest radio's and LTE Bands, so it makes a big difference from someone using a phone that is 3 years old and lacking the radios to pick up Band 71 and 66). A lot of time is spent in the airports too, so if there were going to be a problem with LTE, that's where issues would arise, due to all the metal and various frequency generation from the tower and planes. And I have met many people with the same exact experience as mine.
Verizon has terrible coverage indoors in the Santa Barbara area, but I'm not going to blanket statement that their indoor coverage sucks. It just simply wouldn't be a true statement without the context of where I am talking about or what device I am using.
