Att told me I can move to a friends plan as an added line and bring over my unlimited but I'm scared that somehow they won't carry it over because it's legacy and they no longer offer it. Hmm
I'm 99% sure that it won't carry over. Any changes to the grandfathered unlimited data plan, then it's buh bye.

Yes, They only offer Tmobile "One". Its unlimited talk/text/data. Throttled after 28GB each month, but its "unlimited"

Meh I have sprint and they throttle at 24gb I am currently using 33gb and 90% of the time I don't notice it at all. Speeds I see around 20mbps and sprint is cheaper than t-mobile for me at least.

Most ATT plans include tethering but with TMO doesn't one have to pay extra for it (as well as having the tethering speed throttled)?

I could be wrong, but I thought I had read that recently.

Na I think if I remember the marketing materials..... The basic plan gets 2G or 3G tethering I believe included.

It all depends on the coverage in your area. I live in the Inland Empire in Southern California and T-Mobile's reception here is terrible! I was with AT&T for over 10 years and never had an issue but I switched due to T-Mobile's low prices. I totally regret it. We're now planning on switching to Verizon. Unfortunately we bought the stupid T-Mobile iPhone 7 that can't be used on Verizon, so come next fall, we're buying new iPhones and running away from T-Mobile.

(Only 8 more months to go... Ugh.)

T-Mobile says they don't have a "coverage issue", but rather an "out-dated image issue". Sure, there coverage is better than it used to be, but it's still terrible. They say they're within 1% of Verizon's coverage, but what that's misleading. They say someone is covered if they're barely on the outskirts of a tower's range, even though it is totally unusable. Verizon on the other hand will have several more towers around the same area making it strong signal throughout the entire area. That does not make Verizon and T-Mobile's coverage within 1%! My phone will often tell me I have 2 bars of LTE on T-Mobile, but we still can't use our phones. My wife and I still have the habit of trying to look things up on our phones when we're out at stores, or in parking lots, or events or whatever. And then in the several minutes we wait for nothing to happen on our phone we grumble about T-Mobile until we give up. Seriously, do a lot of research on coverage maps on the general areas you go before you switch. I might as well just cancel my T-Mobile service and just rely on Wi-Fi because that's essentially what I'm doing now anyways.

Play with these maps in your specific areas (shopping centers, your house, work, etc). Zoom in pretty far, because at a distance sometimes areas look pretty good, until you zoom in on specific areas and see how bad it can be.

But you get A) better customer service from my experience and B) better coverage.

From my experience I got way worst customer service with AT&T. Tmobile customer service is so friendly, polite and helpful. Not even close.
And coverage with Tmobile everywhere I been has been solid.

It depends on the plan.
My unlimited data plans have 14GB's of high speed hotspot Data per line.

ATT customer service isn't only the worst out of all US carriers, it is the worst of any company I've ever dealt with. I remember, when I was looking to switch to Tmo (who are mostly awesome), I was ready to pay ATT any amount of $$ just so I don't have to deal with them a minute longer. Absolutely the very worst!

I was with T-mobile twice and both times they treated my poorly.

In terms of best to worse in customer service I would say:

Verizon
AT&T
Sprint
T-Mobile

Tell me about it.
When I was on my way out and wanted to switch to Tmobile they drove me nuts for over 2 weeks.
I just wanted to pay them off and pay off my final bill and have them unlock my iphones as per their rules. Even though my final bill was paid off and due to the unlimited data plan price increase I was allowed to go ETF free they still wouldn't unlock them and would have me submit online unlock requests through their website that kept getting denied the next day.
They would give me the run around via multiple calls every day and hours wasted.
After an FCC and BBB complain they finally unlocked my iphones.

In general they have been great to me every time I called Tmobile.
And easily credit me back fees and complimentary service charges.
Towards the end AT&T's incompetence and attitude totally ruined it. I will never want to deal with them again. Probably because I was switching away and was not a customer any more they were trying extra hard not to help me after paying them for over 16 years of service.
And a few weeks ago I get an email saying my AT&T online account has been temporarily locked due to too many wrong user ID and password attempts :(
I guess someone tried to hack into it possibly.
But why is my AT&T online access still available over a year later since I closed my account?

Is $5 more really a big deal?

Considering it is the 2nd $5 increase in 13 months, it is getting to be a big deal. Unlimited data will now be a $40 add on. I too am thinking about making the jump, but anyone I know with T-mobile in central NJ hates it so I most likely will stay with AT&T. May give up my grandfathered unlimited and just change to the Directv unlimited plan, as it will now be a cheaper option for me...at least as long as I keep Directv.

You can not tether at all with the grandfathered At&T unlimited data plans, not sure about the Directv unlimited plan, knowing At&T probably not. I use the free data per month on T-Mobile on my iPad when I don't have wifi and need it.
