The unlocked phone you get from Apple will be the same exact phone you will get from T-Mobile. Just make sure it's the newest model that supports the T-Mobile AWS bands. Apple should begin selling those in stores Friday, and it will be the new standard unlocked GSM iPhone.

i already own mine. will the software update not suffice?

I believe the software update will only get you access to their LTE, but for 3G/4G, you have to be in an area where they refarmed their 3G/4G to work on AT&T's iPhone. If your area isn't refarmed, then you'd be on EDGE outside of LTE I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong)

You don't own the new model with the AWS bands because they haven't began selling them yet. The old unlocked GSM phone will not get T-Mobile's 3G on the 1900MHz band. You'll have to be in a refarmed area to get 3G.

The current model will get 3G on 1900Mhz. The new model will support the AWS bands too (1700/2100) so it will get 3G areas that haven't been refarmed yet.

Better idea...

Uh... sell... your iPhone 5 (for about $500-700 depending on capacity), then pay your remaining ETF (AT&T ETF drops by $10 for every month of your contract served), use the rest for your down payment on new T-Mobile iPhone 5.

That's what I am doing.

Actually the best rate of return for your device is to go to AT&T's website and find the link that allows you to have your phone unlocked.
As long as you have a good track record with them, they will review your account and unlock your iPhone.
THEN you sell the device on Ebay as an UNLOCKED iPhone.

Actually here is the direct link.

I like T-Mobile's service, I think their LTE in the East Coast corridor is far superior to ATTs. Had an ATT iPad 4 for two weeks are rarely had LTE anywhere in the DMV. Only, it doesn't make much sense to get a 5 when we're a few months away from the 5S - even though, while it may be released in August or September, it'll be several months before you can easily get one.

Who paid you to type that response out? T-Mobile only has LTE in seven markets. AT&T has LTE in 171 markets.

I'd definitely rather sell via third party (Craigslist). $220 is nothing, considering what I could get on Craigslist, for an iPhone 4/4S regardless.

Does T-Mobile offer the same services and coverage for iPhone users that AT&T does? 4G/LTE data speeds? Visual voicemail? MMS? International roaming/data options?

"In line with a report from earlier this week, TmoNews reports that T-Mobile USA has begun rolling out software updates for existing customers running unlocked iPhones on its network.

As the carrier notes in its support forum, the update enables a number of features, including LTE support where available, ahead of the official launch of new iPhone 5 sales for the carrier next week.
Enables the following:

- Visual Voicemail
- 4G network indicator
- Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS)
- AWS LTE (T-Mobile and officially unlocked AT&T iPhone 5 only)
- HD Voice (T-Mobile and officially unlocked AT&T iPhone 5 only)
- AWS HSPA+ (T-Mobile and new 2013 AT&T iPhone 5 only)

Auto configures:

- MMS Settings
- Personal Hotspot Settings (Smartphone Mobile Hotspot)
- APN settings for LTE connectivity
- My Account bookmark"

Yes, plus HD Voice.

I was going to make the switch, but guess what T-mobile, just found out my tenants downstairs have the worst reception, when ATT is 5 bars with LTE. Sucks so much.

I'd ask if it was only bad in the building, T-Mobile will give you a free inside tower.

Not true, T-Mobile has LTE fully rolled out in 7 markets, but it has LTE in other markets. It is not rolled out in Ann Arbor Michigan where I am at, but in some areas there is LTE.

However, perhaps the person meant 4G, which HSPA+ is billed as 4G and often times has comparable speeds.

While I guess this is convenient, you could sell an iPhone 4 for $120 in 5 minutes on craigslist. And they probably won't even give $120 for the 4.

iPhone 4S even more since it will work with any carrier.

You can easily sell an unlocked iPhone 4 on ebay for around $250-275. A 4s for well over $400.

no, i'm sure you are correct. i'm in nyc, so it seems like i'm ok. is there official t-mobile info on the coverage? thanks!

no, i realize that. i meant i already own an unlocked 5.

If you have 4 lines, family plan is $100.

Where does it say $100. No, I don't have or need 4 lines.

$100 in a plan is probably $120 in the end.

Much of the time the savings with budget carriers is significantly better if you just need a plan for yourself.

Can you elaborate? I hate how AT&T is jacking up its price, and T-Mobile's discount is for fools can't do math.

Hell no! I'm running Edge on my factory unlocked 4S down here in Louisiana. Only the west coast, New York & Boston have LTE on T-Mobile iPhones... They're a joke.

But your 4S wouldn't work on LTE anyway.. And it is a little hard to criticize T-Mobile's LTE coverage seeing as they *JUST* launched it.. Of course I hope they meet or exceed their goals they've laid out for this year, but I can't really be mad at them for doing what they said so far...

I would love to do this with T-Mobile. But I don't trust their coverage. I had them a while ago and a lot of places I went I couldn't get reception. Not just poor reception, no reception at all.

$50 first line + $30 second line + $10 each additional

EACH LINE gets 500 MB of 4G, unlimited talk text and web

Show me something that's even close from AT&T or Verizon or Sprint

Because your factory unlocked iPhone 4S does not support T-Mo AWS 1700 Mhz band, the tweaked phones will.

AT&T and Sprint are costly, especially Sprint for the service provided. Let's see how many bars you will get. At the moment, AT&T is faster and more reliable than T-Mobile.

That's a different story, it depends on where you live, and every carrier have their own pros and cons. When comparing costs, you should compare costs for carriers that cover your area well, otherwise the point is moot.

That said, in major metro areas, where most carriers have good coverage, T-Mobile wins in terms of value, period

I disagree. In NYC, T-Mobile is horrible. Here's another post from MacRumors. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1497229/

Like I said, T-mobile has a great concept, they need some work.

I applaud T-mobile for reducing cost, where AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint are taking away as much as they can.

I'm not sure I understand. I visited Oregon just last week and lone and behold my iPhone 4S said "4G" at the top and it was the fastest it's ever been! I could watch YouTube videos on my iPhone... YOUTUBE!!!

4G, LTD, I don't care what you call it, all I know is that the hippies have in in Portlandia and we don't have it here!

Well, the 4G you got in T-Mobile speak is their refarmed HSPA+ 21 (which is what your 4S can use-and could use even before the carrier update, though it showed up as 3G prior to the update). I definitely agree that it will be very nice to see them expand that.

The 4S cannot use LTE, but on the phones that can, it actually says "LTE" where you see 4G or EDGE.
