I think the reason it is such low pricing is because that Apple made it's own chip, so it doesn't need to buy the chips (only the material and labor cost).

I'd love for you to continue updating us on your experiences. You have my interest.

I will do. Sorry if it seems like I'm being overly analytical; I'm a scientist by trade and I like justifying my decisions as rigorously as possible. But then, I'm also someone who looks at the lack of application-level multitasking on the iPhone OS with hope rather than disappointment. Mainly because I'd love to see them not use the old models of co-operative or pre-emptive multitasking (and implementing either of those models of concurrency would make it very different to use a more nuanced, and potentially cycle saving, lazy concurrency). So I can be optimistic too ;)

And, what MS did on stage before the Apple event was like some sad crap vendor pushing bad fruit before the fresh Apples rolled into town. If I wanted a tablet for mobile browsing and mild document creation, I wouldn't want the clunky, bloated, or fictional, stuff offered by some sweaty, bald, second stinger clinging to ill designed products.

You said the words right out of my brain!

I expect a lot of Slate products shown at CES to never see the light of day again.

I'm usually very anti - microsoft and pc, I am usually a drunk when it comed to apple and always drinking the koolaid. But seeing some leaked photo's of courier, has me wanting one...I think this would be a priceless addition as far as my consulting.

My only question is when, this could be the 1st item I've seen in years that may sell better to creatives than a mac item...

The difference between Apple and other companies is that Apple doesn't show prototypes. They show finished products. And this product has a wealth of apps already made for it ready to go.

The HP Slate computer, unless it is coming out soon, is still a prototype running a computer OS.

Same thing with Microsoft's impressive tech demos. While very VERY cool, it's not something we can get. It's like car companies showing concept vehicles that we all want, but they will never make.

What I don't understand is why people keep comparing the Kindle to the ipad. They are not in the same class. The Kindle was never marketed to be able to browse the internet or watch movies or listen to music. It is and was markted as an ebook, meaning it has one single purpose and that is for the owners of it to be able to read books on it. That is all. The ipad is neither a ebook nor is it a netbook. It is a larger ipod touch, plain and simple. Can you read on it yes but that does not mean it is in the same class as the Kindle. It is a MID (multimedia internet device) The sooner people understand that the better. I am getting tired of people comparing it to ebook readers and netbooks/notebooks.

You're quite right, the iPad is just an iPod Touch with a larger screen, but with added functionality -- see my previous post about iBooks and (especially) iWork.

Amazon marketed the Kindle as an eBook Reader, but it always knew that the hardware was capable of just that little bit more, hence the SDK for the Kindle. And a copycat of the AppStore. Amazon is worried, otherwise why switch its 70/30 split to 30/70 in favour of content producers?

I don't have a problem with being analytical. It's just refreshing to see.

I doubt that they will see much, if any, parts cost advantage.

What Apple has done is take control of their own specs and development schedules in the mobile arena instead of relying on outside sources. Doing so, behind a curtain of secrecy, will give Apple a great marketing advantage over those dependent on off-the-shelf chips.

If they can make and sell a Netbook with a physical keyboard for $250 then they can make a net book with no keyboard for even less.

All they have to do is remove the keys and place the LCD where the keys were and save the cost of not only the keys but the hinged cover too.

... and add a touchscreen:rolleyes:

No way.

If I'm going out (dinner, date, whatever), I just need my keys, wallet and phone. There is no way I'd schlepp the iPad around; it doesn't fit in a pocket.

no worries, by the time you are seated, you'll be given with an iPad instead of a menu. There you can browse the food, the wine selection, and perhaps a video of the chef's recommendation for the day. And perhaps, while waiting, you can browse pictures of waitresses in bikini.

Thank you. Out of curiosity, are you aware of any discussions regarding the potential (or not) for lazy/on-demand concurrency with the iPhone OS (as opposed to pre-emptive/polling multitasking like found on most desktops)?

Sadly I don't keep up with iPhone OS development, yet. I'm just getting my documentation before diving into the SDK.

You hit that right on the head. There is going to be a huge aftermarket for integrating iPads into kiosks, tables and other stationary places that use embedded PCs right now.

These items can be make more secure than embedded PCs and slick user interfaces are going to be very quickly implemented. Think of it, walk up to an iPad enabled ATM, WiFi your passcode and off you go. I'm sure there is a business plan out there somewhere for this.

Not to mention the automotive aftermarket! Just a matter of time before we see an iPad job on "Pimp My Ride" or "Overhauling."

I think the Kindle DX could be be serious competition IF they allowed for at the least web browsing...

I am bettering good money there is a color Kindle all done and ready to launch in the next three months to counter the iPad market launch. Whomever is doing the iPad screen has a competitor that wants some of this market and the Kindle will get that screen Apple turned down.

All they have to do to beat the iPad is...

Add a Camera and Video Conferencing functions
Add USB ports and 9-1 card Reader
Add XP or similar OS so we can use it like a computer rather than a peripheral
Add the Video Port or I/O so I can hook it up to my TV or use it as a touch screen monitor for my computer.
Add a pressure sensitive stylus for us artists out there (Wacom can do it, why not Apple?)

If its a bit more bulky, who cares! Its going to do everything a computer should rather than be a 10" 1.5lb magazine on your coffee table (which if you believe the hype will also be a touch screen device)

Sorry but I'm not sold on this as something that will survive long term in the way people are going. Cool for bus rides for students but they need the function of a laptop OS, not an iPhone and I can't see someone carrying a iPad & Laptop as much as I can see a iPod Touch or Iphone & Laptop. I may look into it if some specific apps come out that allow me to use it as stated above, but I think I'll wait for Version 2 if it makes it.

Its simply not a "MUST HAVE" product I was hoping for.

Exactly. I thoroughly expect that by next holiday shopping season, there will be Win7 tablet devices that take a dump on the iPad.

Any other products you'd like to point out that you don't need while you're at it? Medical equipment? High end video production equipment? Femine products? Diabetic cook books? Accessories for products you don't own? Your body and you children's books? Textbooks for fields you could care less about? Yachts? Fishing boats? Do any of those also not fall into your 'can't live without owning' category?

Just throwing some ideas out there for you in case you want to continue with that line of thought...

LMAO!

I was also disappointed at first that it didn't fill a void and make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but now it's kinda growing on me. I am thinking education market will be great, I hope to get one for my kids and write some apps to help them learn to read (and no, they are not 15 years old :D )

The thing about vendors "holding off" is just China waiting to see what they have to copy.

Hopefully this chip which Apple has will actually unique enough to stave off the cheap knock-offs for a while. Of course, people can make identical LOOKING devices, but with enough juice to power that big IPS screen and get 10hrs video playback... hahahahaha, just try China!!!

I'm really excited to hear the spin off names, like we had the iFone, S-iPhone, etc..

good question...

I have a laptop. Why do I want anything else?

That is fine. But, Apple is under no obligation to create a new product that appeals to everyone, including you. Despite that though, they will sell millions, really. If this is such a flop, such a blunder, why are the netbook manufacturers in such a tizzy?

Here's a question for you. If you have a laptop, and don't need anything else, why even bother to read through all of this, and post?

No, this device will NOT replace your laptop, nor your phone (smart or not). It will occupy a new niche that doesn't really exist, unlike the netbooks, which mostly are just smaller, slower, cheaper laptops. Unlike the HP slate, which admittedly is just running a modded laptop OS, or the modbook, which runs OSX. Complain about the closed loop of Apple (which seems to work fine on the iPhone, or the iPods), or the lack of a "real" OS. But if you read the fine print, the only real power consumption is from the screen, not the processors. Flash is a pig, while my kids love HULU, the fans kick in all the time. Watching Quicktime in HD though, and the fans hardly ever whir.

Most of the talk has been negative, which I guess is understandable, as the hype (that WE created, more than Apple did), was impossible to match. Space age facial recognition between different users? Cameras hidden behind the screen itself (which may well happen). Screens that have solar panels in them. etc. etc. Ironically the things that it did have were significant, and WOW features. Yet we are so jaded and cynical to not say so. No one ever said $499. Most said around $999, a few said great niche product but around 2k, some said $799. $499 is a WOW. Here's another WOW. A data access plan with NO contract (WOW), one that cuts the cost in HALF (WOW). Who cares if it is on ATT, it is way cheaper than Verizon would have it cost (trust me, my bill only goes up, and it is outrageous).

I am excited by the possibilities, and can't wait to see what features sneak into the product by the release date, and by what comes next. Yes it is a 1.0 offering, but I bought the first iPod as well (and bought about five after that one). If the product doesn't appeal or have use for you, fine. I just can't understand everyone feeling so compelled to let everyone know about it. I guess it makes "you" (speaking collectively) smarter than Apple. I am willing to bet you are on the wrong side of history on that...

cheers,
michael

AMEN, brother.

I can't think of anything I would want to plug into this thing if it had a USB port? Seriously guys why do you want USB ports on this thing? Why on earth would you buy a tablet computer to leave it hooked up to a tv? so again, why do you want a HDMI port? Why do you want expandable memory? How many movies could you possible watch between the ability to swap data on the device. I have 2 terabytes of digital movies and tv shows sitting on a hdd attached to my television. You can't possibly tell me that anyone had expected a tablet computer that can hold everything? Most people have more MP3's then 64gb.

I think a lot of you are trying to make this thing a laptop.

I want this thing so that I can sit on the couch and surf the internet. A laptop is not really a portable computer, its just a computer you can pick up and put down somewhere else to use. A device like this takes all of the everyday tasks and lets you do them while walking around the house or sitting in the car.

When I look at everything that I do on computers (I am a professional photographer by trade), most of those things I don't want to be sitting at a separate desk to do. If someone sends me an email, I want to hold that email in my hand and reply to it, like a letter. I don't want to walk into another room, sit down at a desk and type away one a keyboard.

People saying that its useless because it doesn't run adobe creative suite are fools who obviously never actually use it. How on earth could you expect good results with a touch screen? It takes a high precision mouse or a wacom tablet to use photoshop properly. When every pixel of distance matters, a touch screen tablet will never suffice.

This device was created for people like me. I own a laptop, a desktop and an iphone. The desktop is for serious work. The laptop is for serious work on the go. I use the iphone for enjoyment, it is a fantastic internet browsing device however the small screen has always bugged me. Until now I have always had to keep email and real internet browsing on the laptop. I can kiss that good bye since now the iPad will give me a better way of enjoying simple computing tasks.

I just cannot believe how cheap it is.

As a designer & art director I am sold, even with the tradeoffs. Not hung up over not being able to run Aperture or Quark, etc. Nice to see someone else is seeing the possibilities...

sounds like apple are already ahead of the game then.. With a superior touchscreen device, that can do internet and email. for less than the amazon kindle et al... I think this "new market segment" is just heating up :)
