i think ios should natively support pdfs. i know you can get apps for it but its kind of a kludge to get it to work, i feel it should be native- why buy an expensive tablet that cant even read a digital book out of the box?

Honestly, I was thinking about getting an iPad 2 but I think Honeycomb is more what you would expect from a 10 inch tablet. It feels more like a desktop.

i would say its too early to tell.
the products that everyone is voting are arent even out yet!
i know this is "macrumors" and its expected...but...
we can at least give these products a fair shot before we shoot them down!
im an apple man myself...but i think that any of this competition is great for us comsumers.
The closer the competition gets to apple...the more they have to try.
Though i love apple...they can get lazy.
There really isnt that much a difference between the original iphone software and the new iOS. Yes yes..multitasking and spped...but they are in need a major overhaul.
I owned a palm pre before my iphone...all my freinds made fun of me because i kept talking up this "webOS" operating system..the hardware was crap..but the software was clearly a step above.
Im looking forward to the actual release of these products and not fighting over the specs we see on web pages.

that being said..im still getting an iPad 2, so ignore everything i just said.

GET WELL STEVE!

I use my iPad for numerous business applications and RDP apps. If those morons don't give more credence to USB support and mouse support. I'm gone. Who needs to upgrade for limited speed increase arms a useless camera. They want the business community then give us what we need.

It looks like the HP will be targeted more towards business use than the current iPad.

So, everyone that likes iOS more than honeycomb and WebOS. what do u like more specifically about iOS? Remember I'm not talking about the ecosystem, or apps, or syncing with iTunes or any of that. What makes iOS better than the others?

That it exists on a tablet that I can buy today. Seriously the demos you have seen are all bull ****. Why do you think that at the Honeycome preview or whatever it was, no one was allowed to touch the tablet ? The tablet was optimized for the demo, and the demo only. How many reviewers have gotten their grubby little hands on a Xoom ? And what, it's supposed to be released in four days ? Yea, we will see.

Yea, they ALL look good on paper. On paper.

Oh, and the ecosystem, apps, iTunes, ect are ALL part of it.

The reviewers will get their hands on them and then we shall shall if they are good or not. Do you think that Apple does things differently? Nobody from the press gets to touch one until it is ready.

According to all the fandroids on MRs, the Xoom is supposed to be released on the 24th, is it not? Today is the 20th.

Some of the press had iPads for a few weeks before release.

Chop chop Motorola. I am ready for a good laugh.

We'll soon see. And perhaps the press has already reviewed them and there is a non disclosure agreement in effect until a certain date? Intel just did this with the Sandy Bridge release.

I'm a second generation android user.
I started out with a Nexus One, and found that to be an excellent phone. I went to the Droidx and was underwhelmed. My company being security minded as opted to enforce encrypted group policies where it comes to accessing the exchange servers. This is something that blackberry and the iPhone supports. Since it seems android does not, my company is in the process of blocking access to the corporate email servers. So for me, is a forgone conclusion that I'll not be getting an android based phone but rather an iphone.

For me, its not a huge deal, I like the iPhone but I was interested in what android had to offer.
I'm in a similar position at work, where we are migrating from BlackBerry to iOS.

Personally besides my iPhones, I've had the G1 Android, then Droid X, and now a new HTC Inspire, a particularly excellent Android model. My iPhone is a nice complimentary device to my new 15" MBP & of course my rather vast collection of music & such on my iPod Touch. There's pros & cons like anything else, that's why I'm platform neutral and use Android / Win7 Laptop as well.

I definitely agree that app, ecosystem, iTunes, etc are important factors in deciding which device to buy. As is similarity to iPhone/iPod touches. These alone are plenty of reason to buy an ipad. In fact these may be the only reasons for many people. and because the ipad is really the only worthy option still to date. And because the $500 price point is low enough for most people. Don't get me wrong, all of those factors are probably the most important things to the success of a device.

But strictly for an OS perspective I don't really see how iOS is so superior. Simplicity? Ok i guess I can see that. Refinement? Sounds good. Only of those 4 OS's on the market? Well yeah but that will change. I guess with the knowledge we have it might not be enough to go on to tout the alternative OS's.

And because the $500 price point is low enough for most people.

I would just take issue with that.

I'm not sure about wage levels and disposable income in the USA, but in the UK the lowest priced iPad is £439 including uk sales tax, or as we call it VAT.

Which in US dollars, is $713.52

This makes the iPad a very luxury item for the vast majority of normal working people. They can buy a new PC, a nice Laptop, a New 42" TV etc etc for that amount of money.

Whilst of course many in the UK can afford it, many more cannot justify such a large price for a non essential item, and there would be a giant market for tablets that are more affordable.

On this theme for anyone in the USA interested in the maths.

In the UK, the 32GB 3G iPad, which one could say is the same level/model as the 32GB 3G Xoom from Motorola, costs $1002.44 including UK sales tax.

Ok, I get it already. iOS is the best mobile OS ever. That's a given in an Apple forum.

But what about remaining calm, rational, and non judgmental, till the competition has time to catch up. Or at least get their devices into the market in the finished form.

I fail to see the point of these somewhat highly charged rants which seemed to be so closed minded. Do you want the world to have only the iPad and be left with no other choice? What does that accomplish?

I know what you mean, but hey, this is an Apple/Mac forum, so really you are going to get a certain point of view from many, and this is only to be expected.

However there are many here who do come across totally unbiased and happy to accept everything has it's plus's and minuses.

You see, me, I think Honeycomb when it launches in a few weeks? should be cut a lot of slack, it's a very mk1 for a tablet, and I'd give it at least two decent major updates before coming down too hard on it.
Once "in the wild" general public will obviously find faults, just in the same way other devices have on day one.

I don't suppose it will get this, as it will almost instantly be put up against an iPad2 with a years development lead to put all issues with iPad1 right, and also a Tablet OS which has had many updates.

All this will iron itself out over time or course, but personally I'm happy to give Honeycomb a little slack to start with.

LOL what are you talking about? Non-judgmental when the thread title is "Battle of the OS - Fight!"? Let us know when the competition 'has had time to catch up' so other posters can be told by you what they are allowed to say. Most of this thread has been as 'calm and rational' as any other.

I fail to see the point of these somewhat highly charged rants which seemed to be so closed minded. Do you want the world to have only the iPad and be left with no other choice? What does that accomplish?

Who are you talking to? I don't want the world to have only the iPad. I think the iPad suits my needs and that's fine, for people who have other needs there's other appropriate products. The iPad isn't all things to all people. Later iterations might be different things to different people. If the current model doesn't have Flash/enough RAM/whatever, buy something which does instead of complaining that people who don't care about your whining are fanboys.

EDIT: Or you could just become an apologist for Honeycomb, because if it's 'better' than iOS then it proves that Apple screwed up, and if Honeycomb is 'worse', hey, cut it some slack because we shouldn't come down too hard on the poor baby.

Most people don't have this kind of investment in determining which OS 'wins', but whatever floats your boat.

Ok well I meant comparitively speaking. I didn't mean to suggest that $500 is just disposable income for everyone. With the Xoom coming out at $800 the $500 price point is much easier to swallow even if the specs are quite as impressive. It would work well enough for people needs for a tablet.
