are you all sure the are even going to introduce the new phone when the new software is released or are you all just hoping and praying they do?

It's currently just an assumption right now.

Though I'd personally be willing to put money on a new iPhone (of some sort) coming out this year.

To the OP, definitely wait until June. They may very well have another deal for an early update at that time, especially since your eligibility is less than 6 months. Furthermore, you could always just buy out your current contract. Since your early termination fee is prorated, I doubt you would be paying much. Once out of your contract, you should be eligible for subsidized pricing again.

Isn't there a waiting period after terminating a contract? It might be something like ninety days...

I say, if you have to ask - BUY IT NOW!

That way you can come on here and post another thread about how you wish you waited and whether or not Apple/AT&T will allow you to exchange iPhones.

To the OP:

When the first gen iPhone was release I bought it. Extended my contract for 2 years, etc. When the 3G was released, I bought it. At the subsidized price and extended my contract for another two years. Apple knows that Apple-fans like to upgrade to the newest gadget. I'm pretty sure they require that AT&T allow this (with the 2 year contract extension) to maintain iPhone exclusivity. I would be shocked if AT&T will not allow me to upgrade to the next gen iPhone even though I'm currently not "eligible for an upgrade" after buying the 3G.

As for you, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. AT&T will be glad for you to hop on the iPhone bandwagon when/if the new iPhone is released. As most stats have come to conclude, iPhone users tend to pay higher bills on average; they like this a lot.

Just my .02 ;)

Well, I bought the 1st iPhone in the middle of March last year and everyone on here said I would be kicking myself and pissed off and wish I had waited for June. Which turned out meant waiting for july for the 3G to be released. And guess what, I wasn't kicking myself, pissed, or sad. I enjoyed the **** out of that 1st gen until I decided to go ahead and sell it and bought the 3G.

Unless owning the latest tech is of upmost importance to you there is no reason not to get a 3G if you think you should. It's a great device and not even a year on the market.

Whatever is on it is not very likely to be worth the extra $400+ I would have to spend to get the phone in June/July.

I won't be able to get the subsidized price until October. As I stated above, that is probably not an option for me (even if I wanted it to be). Even if it were an option, I'm not sure it makes sense to wait five months to get something that I need now just for a few hardware upgrades. If I get one now I will be ready for an upgrade when the 2010 version comes out.

I am not an early adopter. I don't have to have every single techno advancement at my fingertips. I certainly don't see that its "stupid" to consider buying the current phone. There are legitimate arguments in favor of buying now.
You NEED an iPhone right now? So get one then instead of dancing around the subject and saying stuff like "this will probably be my last post in this thread" and that you will wait just because people said so.

If you are not an early adopter and don't want to "waste" a few hundred notes over a couple of years, get a current iPhone 3G and enjoy it. Deep down though, you know you want the new phone, you know you will regret it eventually if you buy the current model, and you just came here to get get others to justify your own decisions. When you don't hear what you want to hear, you whine at people not giving reasonable hardware justifications...do some research yourself you lazy bugger! The chances are, it's going to be an evolutionary upgrade with a metal back, better battery life, better camera, and maybe a magnetometer (compass).

The reason why most people are suggesting you wait is because most people are not stupid enough to buy an expensive phone knowing it is likely to be replaced in the next couple of months. That's all there is to it really - money should not be such a consideration if you want an iPhone. Either way, it's going to cost you.

I want an iPhone. I'd like one now so that I can use its features on some up-coming trips I'm going on. However, I am waiting to see what Apple announce before making any decisions. If no new iPhone is announced, I'll get a current model. If one is announced and I don't feel it's worth the extra money, I'll get a current model. Common sense really.

Grow up, think for yourself for a change, make a decision, and stop worrying about it.

WAIT WAIT WAIT

whatever is gonna happen in june/july is good,im personaly waiting to get it,im in a family plan with verizon and i wanted to get it last month but i heard so many rumors about a new iphone this summer so im waiting,im sure it'll be worth the wait:D

Thought I'd throw this out there if it hasn't been said already, but the build quality on the current iPhone 3G is a @#$%ing joke. The light leak and plastic cracking issues (among other things) SHOULD have been fixed the instant they were discovered but Apple doesn't seem to give a crap. It's more likely the new model won't have these problems since it's likely to feature a redesigned housing. The last thing you would want is to be dealing with replacement 3G's from Apple in several months time instead of enjoying your shiny new and *HOPEFULLY!* defect-free 3rd gen iPhone.

I hope your right about that.

ATT doesn't EXTEND contracts for 2 years, do they? I haven't seen that in my case when I bought my iPhone 3G. The old contract was REPLACED with a new one for of 2 years. Otherwise, my existing contract wouldn't expire until April of 2011, rather than November 2010. With subsidized phone upgrade eligibility earlier than that.

Regardless, unless ATT provides a special, early upgrade price for the next iPhone, I'm not going to be eligible for a subsidized upgrade until summer of 2010. The possible NEXT iPhone. And depending on the shape of my phone then, I can decide whether to upgrade or see what ATT and Apple have in mind for 4G then.

Ack! You are correct. Not "extended" but replaced my contract with a new 2 year contract.

just wait it out. I've wanted an iphone since last july's release but i wasn't eligible for an upgrade until this march. Now i'm eligible but i'm going to wait. if you can't wait for a month to see what's out there, buy one now and regret it in a month.

Is it possible that Apple will announce a contract with Verizon in June at the WWDC?

This is possibly the most conclusory, ignorant, and baseless post I have ever read. Thanks for nothing. Cheerio, bugger.

For Your Consideration

I was reading your thread and it occurred to me that even though they will probably announce changes to the iPhone and iPod lines, unless the changes are minor like memory upgrades, typically the changes do not come to market for a few months after the announcement. Now there have been a few exceptions but not with the iPhone line. So my advice to you is that you buy if you need (my heart felt recommendation), or be ready to wait to the end of the year.

Thanks for the response. While some people would have you believe otherwise, I have done a great deal of research in this process. I came here in hopes of getting information that is somewhat hard to come by in conventional articles and other general research items. Thanks for that nugget.

I will "need" a new phone before the end of the year as my current one is in the middle stages of senility. Its not that I necessarily need an iPhone right this second. That would obviously make it an easy choice. I'd just rather not buy some kind of fill-in phone until October unless the new iPhone will be undeniably and materially better.

Also, thanks to Mikey B and others who have given a reasonable opinion.

One thing to consider. You always pay what is known as the "pioneer tax" when you get the latest technology. That is the price premium for the new technology.

However, it looks like the hardware upgrade might be worth it this time. It looks like a substantial hardware upgrade.
If you are getting a new cpu, new platform, more memory and better bandwidth
then you are really getting a new phone that can make you more productive in the long run by accessing apps faster and surfing the internet faster. How much is your time worth over the next two years?

You might want to wait because if there ever was a time to wait, it is now because the hardware might be superior and provide a better user experience.

Thanks Primbs. That is definitely the biggest area of potential upgrade that interests me and the one that makes it a difficult choice. From reading various articles it seems apparent that Apple will upgrade the speed and processing capability of the phone with their next gen model. After all, why put out a new model if it isn't better in such a basic area?

I think my plan as of right now is to ride out my current device as long as it is practical to do so. If the new iPhone comes out before my current model becomes essentially inoperable and AT&T offers me an upgrade for new iPhone, then I will have a choice to make. If not, then I will go with the current iPhone.

With all the rumors of an improved screen and HD video recording, I'd wait for the new model if possible.

Amazingly, many companies do put out new models that are not much different in these basic areas. That is why it is good discuss this issue. Many PC manufacturers would just do minor upgrades to the size of the memory or add a slightly increased CPU and call it a major upgrade.

It is only when you increase the bus speed, CPU, memory size and speed, bandwidth that you are really getting a new machine worth paying more for.

With the way the apps are going, video etc, you might appreciate the extra wireless bandwidth and CPU and memory power.

Based on the rumors, it looks like a worthy upgrade and the user experience will be enhanced because of the increased speed. The speed seems good already, but it can always be improved.
