Yeah, it depends on the country, and how long you're staying there. Obviously local SIMs will be a much better deal in most cases, when available.

If you turn Airplane mode on, it'll cut off all connections, but you can go back and turn Wi-Fi back on.

Why not just purchase a local sim card and remove the original sim until you get back home?

I'm going overseas for a few months and I'm suspending my services in the US and just using a local SIM. That way there is no concern of being charged.
