You're returning the phone because of a bunch of small dots that don't affect performance of the phone at all? Yeah it sounds like you didn't want the thing in the first place.

Some people want to get their device in pristine condition when they buy it, it's not a crazy idea for a person to want a new purchase to be blemish free. It has nothing to do with performance. And not everyone wants to use a case. Some people want a new device with no blemishes and will except damaging it themselves, because that's where the damage (if any should occur to it) should come from.

You are comparing a ferrari to an iphone. Think about that for a while. The latter being able to cover up any scratches with a case.

No reason for you to post at all. Its his phone, not yours. If you are so into keeping a phone with defects that's up to you, but to vent against those that will not accept a phone out of the box with nicks or scuffs is just immature. :(

Having a small scratch on my iphone 5 isn't going to send me into cardiac arrest, so you're right i'm not you. I'm not going to waste my time (and other's) going back and forth trying to get the perfect product, and for what? It's going to get scratched, that is inevitable. But in this case, it's not on the screen, it's not going to affect performance, and he said he's going to put a case over it anyways so what is the point? Why bother going through all this hassle? To replace a perfectly working phone for another because of a few minor scratches?

I can understand something like dead pixels or a crooked screen but this whole scuffgate business is just breathtaking, the lengths some people here go through. Stay classy macrumors.

What's not classy about being smart enough to want a device that's being bought new to be without flaws when there are clearly plenty of iPhone 5's that don't have blemishes? Also, many people like myself resell their phones on a yearly basis, so the better condition the phone is in the better! Are you ok with buying clothes with stains in them when it doesn't change it's performance of covering your body? What if a theft sensor was left on your jeans, would you not take it back to have it removed? Or would you leave it because it doesn't stop it from being wearable?

I'd say the word analogy is a better fit in this scenario.

a·nal·o·gy/əˈnaləjē/
Noun: A comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification.

Apple has been slipping big time on quality control. They did not have these problems with previous iphones.

lolll... dam my ferrari vs iphone comparision made a few headlines on this thread... :D:D
good to know that everyone else on the thread understood my point (except paulink)... for a second or 2 i thought i was the weirdo for expecting a flawless product!! :p

Honestly, your analogy is moronic. The past 5 iphones I have owned were perfect out of the box. Why should this one be any different? Apple is slipping.

The snark in me thinks:

First world problems.

However, the fan in me makes me want to see a pic of what the imperfection is that would engender returning the device. I would certainly return it for a dent but small silver dots I can't get my head around.

thanks guys. Glad to know I am not the only one who feels this is unacceptable and that I deserve more.

I will try and get to my local apple store either tomorrow night or at worst Saturday.

However I will ring them up tonight to see about availability etc.

I will keep you guys posted on how it goes and what they say.

:)

paulink is just a troll. Note how he goes into thread and posts for a while, then stops after people are arguing.

Good for you - take it back and tell Apple what you think of it!

I am a troll because I went to sleep? You guys are the best.

I'm not going to bother arguing with the people in this thread because they're clearly delusional and think that a couple of specks is a big deal. i had a small scuff right out of the box but i'm not going to cry about it, i'm sorry. It's not a defect, and it doesn't affect usage.

But of course my argument will be passed off as apologetic, or trolling. And they'll make another hilarious comparison that aren't even remotely similar.

ofcourse he wanted it. he shouldn't settle for anything less than 100% after spending his cash. it's like saying someone bought a ferrari that came with key scrach marks on the door. doesnt affect the performance of the car, so why should 1 bother about the key scrach marks..!!
i'd suggest go n get it replaced. open the new box there & make sure u get what you pay for.
g'luck.

I think those are two completely different scenarios and nothing alike. A Ferrari costs 300 grand. An iPhone only cost 300 dollars.

If he wants to take it back its his constitutional right but geeze you can't compare the thing to a 300 grand item.

Bottom line is this. Apple is not discounting the phone due to scratches or dents, so why should you pay full price for a less than perfect product? If I wanted scratches or dents, I would buy a $20 tracfone, not a $650 iphone.

This comment would be relevant to an Android device. Its simply unacceptable for an Apple product. Period. I would do the same

It's a fine comparison. A Ferrari is a premium car. An iPhone is a premium phone. We're not talking about price here.

For what it's worth, I agree that *if it bothers you* you shouldn't hesitate to return it. I for one couldn't care less about manufacturing defects unless they affect the screen.

My bad
The car is a great analogue/parallel
Just bigger magnitude for effect

That was snarky of me to post a dictionary definition

I probat treat my iPhone 5 and my imaginary Ferrari better than most

I would too. As much as I love the 5, I wouldn't settle for perfection after throwing $800 into it!

Thank god I got a perfect one.

Conceptually, maybe, in reality no. When you see a Ferrari, I think most people would prefer it to whatever they drive if given the choice, but you dont see them all over the place like you see IPhones all over the place. So the monetary comparison isn't even close, but this has been debated to death since all these flaws have come to light.

Slightly OT, but who would drop $1k on a phone.... or even $650 or whatever the 16GB retail price is, seems mighty excessive. Perhaps the difference between paulink's opinion who may have been eligible for an upgrade and someone who spent nearly $1k on it. A minor scratch on a $200 phone isn't nearly as big of a deal as the same item that costs 5x that amount, even though it's the same item...
