I’m happy with tweetbot 2, so I will stick With that, and leave the maximum number of tweetbot 3 slots available for you guys to get it :) :) ;-)

Normally I'd agree, but the timing just seems pretty gross. They discount Tweetbot 2 because Twitter for Mac goes down, and then launch Tweetbot 3 weeks later. Seems like they're betting on people that had to migrate having to buy both - which is the boat I'm in now.
Exactly. And they suggested people to refund version 2 and buy version 3. But iTunes refused my refund request. They have waited long enough so that the people bought when Twitter closed down their official app cannot get any refund.

There's up to 90 days to get a refund and I've never had a refund request rejected by iTunes, but then the only times I've requested refunds were when I accidentally purchased the wrong item.

You could always wait 6 months before buying the latest version to make yourself feel better? :p But then your own signature says...
Life is short. Always enjoy what you want.
(not to mention the thousands of dollars worth of devices you've got in your signature too)

The amount of time people spend complaining about paid upgrades has to be worth more than $10 of their own time, surely. It really makes me wonder how people get through life if they spend so much effort thinking about spending $10 on something that they're going to use every day. It's a no-brainer.

Hey it's not like I'm spending much time thinking about buying or not. I will buy it anyways but I'm in no rush.

I like the developer! Just found my timing of buying was a bit bad. Twitter's official app was good enough for me but it's such a pity that they killed it.

I will not proceed with the refund request if it's not doable by simply submitting through "report a problem" from the iTunes receipt ("this purchase is not eligible for refund" was the error message I got). I only tried because the developer asked people to. If there is a way to pay less why pay more? :p

Cheers.

No, they really didn't. Most of what changed was simply bug fixes and updates to add new features Twitter added long before they got around to doing so. Certainly not many updates in 3 years since version 2 was released back in 2015.

https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/43926/tweetbot/version-history

They added new features quickly, such as increase to 280 character limit. Other features like sending pictures in DM were only added much later than official client because Twitter only released an API for that feature much later.

They added all the new features in the 3 years that Twitter gave them the APIs to actually do.

Wish I could. Lol.

Obviously it's not a huge deal. As has been pointed out many times, it's only a few dollars (although $14 for a service that is otherwise free is still a bit of a stretch). Still just feels a bit sneaky and money-hungry to me - especially since Tweetbot 3 really isn't much different to Tweetbot 2, other than icons being persistent now.

You purchased on the same day as me. My purchase is not eligible for refund too.

I'm going to buy it when I finish this post. But I'm disappointed they didn't add in some actual Twitter features, like group chat, polls, and threads. These are being widely used now, and you can't access them at all from Tweetbot.

The absence of these is Twitter's fault; Twitter doesn't allow 3rd party apps access to those features.

Between twitterific and tweetbot, which is better and why? Anyone have a quick comparo?

My thanks in advance.

that's why so many app developers are moving to subscription-based model

Yes, I stopped paying for VueScan because it got to be so expensive. Subscriptions make sense if you are a developer since it offers a semi-steady source of revenue. But to the customer, much of the time people just want to pay once. My guess is that subscription-based licensing will eventually go the way of the dodo (for most). The only exception will be popular and pricey apps, such as Photoshop.

New icon looks evil.

They had admitted in the past that the TweetBot for Mac was a clone of TweetBot for iOS, and with that came usability and user experience issues. It looks like they've rebuilt the app natively for Mac this time, which is a smart decision.

Not sure why you'd think that an iOS app should take precedence over a Mac app. Is the Mac now living in the shadows of iOS? Not for many of us. Or do you think that they should have released the update for both platforms at once to avoid marketplace confusion? I agree with that.

Is Mac living in the shadows of iOS? Well, I'm typing this on my Mac, but I would think there's many more iOS app downloads than OSX. I bet sales for iOS devices is much higher than Mac sells. There's three MacBooks in my house compared to to eight iOS devices. I haven't looked it up but I bet iOS app downloads put Mac downloads in the shadows. Several of my daily go to apps for work have much better iOS apps than their Mac versions

I'd very happily pay for software to continue to be supported, but this seems like a massive functional regression. Most of the UI changes are for the worse :-(

It will take some time to get used to the new UI of course, but the dark theme is too dark (contrasty) for me. I'd preferred it if they had taken the dark colors of the iOS version.
(I submitted this as feedback to Tapbots)

Well that sucks bigly.

Now that I have it installed, it doesn't appear to support multiple columns (simultaneously), which will force me back to the older version. I want to see my stream, activity, and DM's at once.

It looks like it's going to be completely unaffordable for 3rd party apps to access the new Twitter API, so if you haven't already bought Twitter 3, it makes sense to wait and see if Tapbots will be able to work with the new situation.

The public pricing that I’m seeing shows Twitter’s Account Activity API pricing as $2,899/month to get activity updates… for 250 users.

Needless to say, we have more than 250 users.

It’s possible an “enterprise” deal could be made, but it seems unlikely to be affordable.

It does. Just keep pulling across and the columns will appear.

I bought it. Was it worth the money? No of course not but I'm always happy to support the developers of apps I use.

I have no time for people who demand everything for free.
Totally agree.
Especially, when a developer makes great apps like this. Tweetbot still provides the best Twitter-experience ever. And it's the first payed upgrade for the macOS client, so not a big deal.

I paid for the upgrade as soon as I saw it was available, and I'm glad to have done so, however, I'm switching back to version 2 due to bugs/regressions/removal of features:
  • Loss of Instapaper support
  • Removal of image preview size options
  • Removal of mute options. (Version 3 only offers to mute a user for 24 hours in contextual menus and the menu bar and loses the intelligence that version 2 had when muting from within a search, but does add options to edit a muted user from the mute list.)
  • Various other UI bugs
  • The truncated text in tweets from Instagram is still a problem, and clicking on the link just shows the photo, not the caption.
I'm hoping we see some quick bug fixes and that some of these features get added back.

Have you reported these bugs to the developer?
