There are a lot more Target stores than Apple stores. Greater distribution channels. Marketing 101.

Sweet. This means Amazon gift certificates can now translate into a discount on the Ipad. :D
And currently they have 5% extra if using Amazon CC in addition to the regular 3%. So you can choose between saving $40 (on the cheapest) or use an Amex to get an extra year of warranty.
You should re-photoshop that - the iPad didn't come out until April.
Not just that; Amazon does not even display it that way. Check any page.

I was surprised...

Our local Target had all of them except for the 64G WIFI. They also had at least 6 of each. The sales guy told me that they 'just appeared' yesterday morning as the displays were juggled to make room for them. We chatted for a while. He had a bunch of questions for me after I told him that I had one. They did not have any units actually on display as they only had boxed product but he said that the display units would probably show up soon.

Interesting that they would not stage the displays better possibly and that the huge backing sign showed no screens showing apps on the iPad screen, just shots of newspapers and iBooks...

EDIT: The display actually drew a lot of people too as I wandered that way with my wife and there was about 6 or 8 people checking the displayless display and chatting up the same salesperson I was talking to.

Actually Amazon CC also has the extra year of warranty. Most visa and MC offer that. Just need to call them to verify.

Yeah, that's nice in theory, but most states require you to pay the tax anyway, even if the retailer doesn't collect it. For example, Massachusetts has a 6.25% sales tax and New Hampshire has no sales tax. If I drive up to NH and buy something, MA still expects me to pay tax on it if I'm planning to use the item primarily in MA. There is a section of the income tax forms dedicated to calculating how much sales tax you owe on out-of-state or online purchases where the retailer did not already collect it. Just because most people fail to do this doesn't mean you're not supposed to.

What I find most interesting about this Target thing is that they are charging $499.99 for it when Apple and Amazon only charge $499. Wonder why they felt like tacking on that extra 99 cents?

I don't know of anyone that pays this tax. I live in Florida and we don't have any income tax either! Yoo hoo.

Add Microcenter to the list of ipad distrubuters. I love Microcenter it's the Walmart of computer components.

While we are pointing out the obvious - another discrepancy is that is displaying the Kindle page and right under it, it displays 99% of the people buy the item featured on this page - which of course is Kindle.

That aside - the photoshopping also reeks of desperation. Fanbois have real figures of recent iPad sales and they are not looking good :p

We did the foot soldier market research at a Target store nearby. Some observations.

1) The big 'ad display' as we entered had the full page iPad ad. Good.

2) we walked down to the electronics area. We could not find where the iPads are. We had to ask the salespeople. They pointed us to the glass display case and offered to help if we wanted to take a look. This is pretty bad. Given all the hoopla, I expected a bit more pomp and circumstances rather than locking up a few iPads in a glass cage.

3) The visible glass cage did not have the iPad but it had the previous generation iPod touch, nano and shuffle. What is the deal with that? I can see the new iPod and Shuffle in the glass cage below the display area

4) Talked to the salespeople. They said the activity has been pretty good. A lot of questions being asked and they sold 6 iPads on the first day.

5) I asked about which carrier do I need to contact for the 3G. He started lecturing me first that this is not a phone and I do not need to go to a carrier. I had to repeat a few times that I am asking about the 3G. He then realized something and said "Yes, it should be AT&T since this is Apple". He then realized there was some memo about this which he then grabbed and showed me that it is indeed AT&T and read out the plan prices.. He is one of the better ones there. Hopefully the training/communication on this will improve

6) The return policy is the same as other electronic components: 90 days with no restocking fee. This surprised me. That sounds very generous. I am not sure if he was right, I forgot to double check at the service desk.

7) Assuming the selling rate slows down 3 a day on the average, that is still around 150000 units a month. Not bad.

Only less evil and more fun! (Seriously, they are worth the trip: they have weird legacy parts and connectors you never find anywhere else. And a decent Apple mini-store with actual chairs so you can sit and play. I used to think they were a down-scale CompUSA, but really their selection is better... just not the decor!)

They also sometimes have the biggest Apple product discounts I have ever seen—big discounts but rare. Like current-model white MacBooks for 20% off (not floor models or returns or outgoing models). With so many places now carrying iPads, all competing with each other, are discounts finally possible on those too? I’ll be watching the Amazon and Microcenter sites and hoping. (And I guess there’s always Black Friday to hope for.)

Huh?

32 GB wifi + 3G
Apple.com = $729.00
Amazon = $822.96

The 32G wifi + 3G is "Sold by Stoobies Electronics and Fulfilled by Amazon" and +100$

This is great news for me!!!!

I LOVE AMAZON!

There is no apple store in my country and although a couple of places here (unauthorized by apple) have a few ipads, they sell them for ridiculous prices (16GB sells for US$1000).

So my best option is to order it online. Apple.com wont take my international credit card, but amazon does! Thanks to amazon I cant get my ipad at the same price that is sold in the US -even without taxes- and just pay a little more for shipping.

I can now order my ipad

Ps. I hope apple doesn't read this, as they may do something to block my purchases.

Ah yes... There in lies the rub!! No one really "pays this tax" on (internet sales)!! We can delve deep into the realm of constitutional law on this issue till we reach ad nausea. The Federal and state governments should have this issue rectified in actual practice and enforcement by the 2030s at latest 2050s, that is assuming the U.S. is still a functioning state that is still enjoying a Unipolar moment in the global economy.

Yeah .. and while your at it .. have it not say "the item featured on this page" next to the iPad ... kind of kills the joke.

WiFi AND 3G

I just went to Target this afternoon. They had all three models of WiFi-only AND the 16GB model with Wifi/3G. They also had an endcap with the VGA adapter and some other stuff. They already have quite a few iPad covers too.

Amazon will take your international credit card, but will NOT ship any electronics, sorry. Now, thats where eBay comes into play :D

As of 4:30pm CST, it is no longer on Amazon...I saw it earlier today though. Now it's back to the inflated price (not directly from Amazon). Any word?
