My son wants a Retina Mini too. I guess it depends on which store you go to. The Target we went to didn't have any Airs, so we got two $200 gift cards. I used the first one the next day, and am now waiting for Retina Mini to come out.

That being said, we also traded in some iPhone 4s for $100 each (it's in the flyer) and was able to get $179.99 iPhone 5s for only $86.99 (includes the $100 trade-in, 6.25% sales tax on some price and 5% off with Target RedCard).

I realize I could've tried selling them on eBay, but that would've been a lot of hassle, and most other trade-in places were offering a lot less than Target.

The hassle is why I took advantage of the target program.

Went to one targeting Watertown Massachusetts, the line was 32 people deep.
Went to one in Hudson MA, no line but I was only allowed to trade one of the two in. The Worcester store gladly allowed memo radek the two in.

I have been thinking about the mini retina, the difference in size and weight of the air compared to the ipad 4 I am having second thoughts on the mini.

I got to the Target in Braintree MA just in time and traded my 1st gen iPad for a cool $200. I was the last person in for the deal. I'm looking forward to a new iPad Air when they get more.

I traded my 1st gen 64gb today, quick and easy $200 ( which is about $50 more than can be expected) no seller fees, no shipping fees.

Was like saying goodby to an old friend for the last 3+ years.

Went I to the target down the way and got a 64gb iPad air and a leather case.

San Francisco Bay Area run around

Went to the San francisco new target mobility store for the iPad trade in. They simply said that the SF stores could not do the deal because of the SF law of them not being licensed as a pawn shop. Apparently if you are to do trade ins you have to have a special license. The store then told us ALL bay area stores were out as of Tuesday. We complained to the manager for something like a rain check but all they would do is whimper and say call customer relations.

We did. Got hung up on x5 times. Finally got what sounded like a computer generated voice that said sorry tough luck. Watch for next week when we might open the promotion again. One of the store staff members said off the record that they may repeat the promotion again for BLACK Friday.

Target S@#'s, well we are not please with them currently let us say.

Cancel your Target order, buy a Visa prepaid gift card with your Target gift card, take the Visa card to an Apple Store and buy your iPad there.

Thanks yg17, I thought about that and the extra fee for the Visa conversion, but buying at Target with my RedCard gave me another 5% off the two ipads, $24 each + free shipping.....saved me $57, so I'll wait for the delivery.....

I think each store is operating with different info - I'm in the Bay Area, east bay, but I called the downtown SF mobility store Tuesday night and they were doing the trade ins with gift cards. They were out of stock on iPads, so they were giving out the gift cards for use on anything. When I checked on Tuesday night, all the East Bay stores were out of stock, but many have gotten a few iPads during the rest of the week. It was like looking for a needle in a haystack to find the gb size you want, so I just ordered online...

I hate to say this, but haha at big liberal douchey government requiring permits, etc. I wouldn't yell at target in this case, that's all your state's doings (if it's actually true what they told you)...if not, then F target. Either way sucks that you couldn't get in on this :(

I wasn't even going to do this then I just happened to ask the guy at target yesterday if their target did the trade in and he said yes so I ran home, grabbed my iPad, ran back and traded it in.

I'm not sure if I want the air or mini retina yet.

pawn shop law

That kind of legality is probably why some folks are reporting issues with just getting a gift card. im sure Utah isn't the only place with rules like that.

I would say than take it and see if you can return it and get a gift card for the value. Or see if you can swap it for a retina mini if you want one, when they come out.

San Francisco CA has the same law. SF recently begged and bent over backwards to get Target to install two new "City" brand stores but failed to give them the ability to take trade ins for trade up etc. Whether it be games or devices it conflicts with the pawn shop rules. Note that Best Buy in the same building has it for their trade programs. Just lazy conflicting bureaucratic city admin.

out of gift cards or out of iPads? i traded in 2 iPad 1s at the albany store on friday and bought the last iPad air - admittedly all they had left was 1 64GB model. they had run out of gift cards earlier in the day but they arranged to bring some gift cards from another store.

these pawn shop rules may or may not be true… if you read back in this thread apparently this deal is illegal in all of florida.

I tried quite a few Targets in the South San Francisco Bay Area (San Jose area), and they all were out of stock on the gift cards. Apparently they had a quite limited supply and way too many people wanting to trade in.

Someone mentioned them extending the program. Any official word on that, or just a rumor?

Tried it, they said I can only trade it in for an iPad and nothing else and won't get a refund.

I wanted to wait for a mini retina..

This was a great idea, but it didn't work for me. Just tried and was told since they have no Air's in stock, I would HAVE to purchase an ipad they did currently have in stock, which was a 64gb mini and 4th gen, and a 32gb iPad 2. No option to wait for the mini, but I could purchase one of the ipads they had and swap it when they get more stock. It's not an option to buy anything else, due to "Florida Law".

I think you guys were missing the point. You could have purchased anything, including the iPad they did have in stock. Then just walk over to the Customer Service counter, return it and get a store gift card. Then when the iPad you want becomes available, just buy it with the gift card. You just have to make sure you don't spend more on the one you are buying/immediately returning than the iPad you plan on getting later, because any money left over on the gift card can only be used at Target.

Best bet is to use the trade in card to buy a real Target GiftCard. I did this a number of times (on my way out just after getting the trade in card) and now have $1400 worth of Target gift cards sitting on my desk (don't ask, it's a long term plan to upgrade my real iPads).

Either way the trade in card is harder to use online. So the real GiftCard is much more practical.

Yep, an exchange or purchase for a gift card is the best bet.

Took my Gen 1 iPad on the last day of the promotion and was in and out in under 10 minutes with a $200 Target gift card. It went so smoothly I told my Grandfather about it and he went and traded in his as well. Thanks Target!

You can't buy a prepaid card, Visa or American Express using a Target gift card. It is the one restriction specifically written on the back of the card. I tried to do it regardless but was declined. The checkout girl even called the manager over who then explained that the register computer doesn't even provide the option to pay using the gift card.

I was under the impression that you are mentioning was true... but I decided to try it since I prefer having "liquid" currency that I can use anywhere rather than target gift card. I walked into Everett, MA store and got 2 $100 VISA gifts cards (this was the highest they had...which sucks since you pay 2 $6 activation fees). Anyhow, $12 later, I was out with $200 dollars in VISA GC. The cashier didn't even have a problem using it. she swiped the gift card... I signed, and then asked me for $12 which I gave her in cash. So it works here in MA.

No go in Florida

I went to trade my 1st gen at a store in Orlando on the 8th. Got there and was informed that I could only trade it in for an item from the store. They had none in stock. Argued for a bit, then went home to call guest relations. They assured me that there was no reason for them to not just give me a $200 gift card instead. I was told to go back to the store and try again, so I did. Talked with the manager and she called corporate, who told her, right in front of me, that there was no reason for her not to give me the card. She still refused. Called guest relations again. That person told me that they are going to extend the promotion into next week, to give stores time to get stock. Talked to a supervisor on saturday and they told me there is no plan to do that. So, guest relations straight up lied to me about that to get me off the phone.

Then, decided that I would just trade my ipad in for a pair of Beats headphones, then return those for store credit, since I had seen that done right in front of my the previous night. Was informed that they no longer are allowing you to trade in for whatever you want... only iPads... but they still have none in stock.

The kicker is... they told me that they had been issuing the gift cards with no problem up until Thursday... So, they obviously changed the policy once they realized they weren't going to be making money off iPads anymore.

Complete bait and switch. In the end, I was never able to take advantage of the promo... but you can be sure that I'm going to exhaust every avenue I can to let corporate know about this trainwreck of a promo... in my experience anyways.
