In Tampa Target. Would NOT provide trade in card. Showed me an email that went out to ALL Florida stores this morning: due to dealer laws you must trade in AND purchase at the same time. Good luck for the rest of you in the Sunshine State.

Anybody in Florida have issues? I had a relative take our original iPad to trade it in at Target for a gift card. They told them they wanted the mini retina, but since it's not out yet, wanted the gift card in the mean time. The employee said that in Florida it is illegal and they can only trade in for an iPad at the time..

Went to my local store here in Florida and was also shown the email. It specifically states that due to laws in Florida and Utah, the trade-in can only be one-for-one with another item of same or greater value at time of trade. They explained that any Mobility employees issuing cards for future purchases could face termination. So you must walk out of the store with a new device. Since, they didn't have any iPad Airs in stock and the model I want (64GB + cellular) is not sold in stores (only online), it looked like I was out of luck.

However, I was able to do a workaround. Since I was required to buy an electronic device on the spot, I told them to give me any device worth $200. They handed me a small set of Bose portable speakers. Once the transaction was complete and before I had even walked out of the store, I walked over to the Customer Service desk and returned the item. I asked them to issue the refund as a new Target gift card. This card can be used in the store and online. Voilà, I circumvented the system. They said what what I did was perfectly legal, but they are not allowed to suggest it to the customer.

So there you go, a solution for those of you facing a roadblock while attempting your trade. Cheers.

I received the " Electronics Trade In Card". Note that before , during and after the transaction I confirmed about 5 times that this is good for any purchase, not just electronics, I was a bit paranoid on this point but not to worry....

I went straight to the checkout and used the $200 from that card to buy a prepaid Visa card. $6 fee. So I netted $194. I can now take that anywhere. I did not want to buy my upgraded ipad from Target so that I did not have to pay sales tax, and they don't carry the 128 Cell models anyway.

I think if you have an Ipad 1 this is a no-brainer. Expires tomorrow.

Best bet is to use the trade in card to buy a real Target GiftCard. I did this a number of times (on my way out just after getting the trade in card) and now have $1400 worth of Target gift cards sitting on my desk (don't ask, it's a long term plan to upgrade my real iPads).

Either way the trade in card is harder to use online. So the real GiftCard is much more practical.

Unfortunately I was not as lucky as those who posted their success today.

Went to my local Target this evening with our 1st-gen 16 GB iPad in hand. Saw another customer holding an iPad, looking disappointed, as we approached the mobile kiosk area. Sure enough, the employee said they ran out of gift cards, so no dice (seriously, why does this deal depend on the availability of a physical piece of plastic?). He also mentioned that 5 other stores in the area ran out, but I got the impression this was vague and simply based on what other customers had said.

He did say they should get more cards tomorrow (but stopped short of guaranteeing it), so I guess I'll try again when the kiosk opens. Wonder if I'll end up driving around to several different locations before all is said and done…

That's BS they could have emailed you an online gift card. I only know this because several stores have emailed me online gift cards when they didn't have any plastic cards left.

Go back tomorrow and don't take that crap for an answer.

Checked on the website and found the 2 targets in my town both listed as participating. Went down to the store, rudest clerk ever, we're not doing any trade-ins we are a new store, she says. I asked to speak to a manager... manager came up and said they are not doing it and its a mistake that they're listed. I asked if the other location would do it and they said no, none in this state. (I live in Alaska, the next nearest state is a 4 hour flight away).

The manager sounded sympathetic as we got to talking (guess I can't blame them for following orders) and she said they are really upset at corporate for having this promotion and listing them. She gave me a corporate guest service line to call. I got home and called them and they "took down my concerns." I asked if someone would get back to me and said no this line is just to provide feedback.

What a joke.

After I was lied to this morning (see my earlier post), my friend tried her luck at the same store (Novato, CA) early this afternoon, and managed to trade hers, and she also grabbed another empty Electronics Trade-In Card for me.

I went back at 7:15 this evening, and although I had to wait for a while because Mobile Guy was dealing with another customer (not iPad-related), they took my three-year-old 1st Gen 16GB WiFi with no argument, and I was out of there by 7:55 with $200 charged up on the card.

Another guy who came in right after me who didn't have a card was turned away, and told to call back tomorrow at 11 (when Mobile Guy starts his shift - they're not technically Target employees, so not there all day, and unfortunately they're the only person allowed to do the trade-ins). If you call, they will hold an empty card for you for ONE HOUR (that's this store's policy, anyway... YMMV).

He told me he'd done 55 trade-ins today (mine was the last), 69 yesterday, and wasn't looking forward to tomorrow. I thanked him and said I hoped he was making some overtime. He looked at me like I was mad and said he hadn't even had lunch yet.

So, if you try tomorrow, be patient, be nice, and good luck.

I live in the sticks of CT and traded two in with no problem and got the last iPad Air they had today (16GB space grey wifi). They would have just given me 400.00 on the exchange card without a purchase.

She said she's done 67 of these trade-ins so far and I told her I hope tomorrow wasn't too busy for her. No line, took about 10 minutes to process everything and walk to the next counter to purchase the new one. One person called asking about the program while I was waiting.

This was in Killingly. Note, the Lisbon store does NOT have a mobility kiosk but had Airs in stock. Waterford does have the kiosk but had no iPad Airs in stock.

My store was completely out of iPads of any type. This thankfully saved me from having to decide whether to be good and keep the credit, or blow it immediately on a Mini. Having decided to be good, I was then reminded by my wife that it was actually her who bought the iPad 1 in the first place, so by rights the $200 should be hers! Bummer! :(

At the City Target at Beverly Connection in L.A. there were six people in the trade-in line at 5pm. They required us to buy an iPad with the trade in... even though we all showed them info showing otherwise. We didn't get to touch the trade-in electronic gift card at all...

Now I have to figure out if I can buy one online (to get the 5%cash back) and then return the mini for the full price...

This was a great idea, but it didn't work for me. Just tried and was told since they have no Air's in stock, I would HAVE to purchase an ipad they did currently have in stock, which was a 64gb mini and 4th gen, and a 32gb iPad 2. No option to wait for the mini, but I could purchase one of the ipads they had and swap it when they get more stock. It's not an option to buy anything else, due to "Florida Law".

Traded in a 1st gen Cellular 32GB model at Target for the $200 here in South Florida. They were out of stock on the 16GB Air models (honestly I never needed more space on the iPad) so they swapped the trade in card for a gift card. I went to Best Buy the same night and they had plenty in-stock, bought it there.

I'll end up using the Target card on regular shopping next time.

I wanted to wait for a mini retina..

I just did it in Destin, Fl. They gave me $200 for an iPad 1 16gb wifi but I had to use the $200 on anything throughout the store that is in stock today. I gave the card to the wife and she is currently buying whatever. She can knock off some of the Christmas shopping with credit from an old ipad I wasn't using anymore.

Update: Wife bought the kid a purple Nintendo 3DS with a car kit and a game. I think she paid $30 out of pocket. So the big Christmas gift for my 6 year old is taken care of.

My husband and I were able to turn in our 64 gb WiFi iPad 1s on Wednesday and get the Trade In cards with no problem. However, since every single Target in the Bay Area was out of stock of the 16 gb Airs, we converted our trade in cards for Target gift cards and ordered 2 Airs on line. All smooth, right? Read on....

Well NOW, I just received an email from Target which says that their delivery date is delayed and instead of the first estimated date of Nov. 14-18, my new estimated delivery date range is Dec. 2-18. What? I called them to ask why the delay, especially since the Airs were listed as In Stock when I placed my order. They gave me some explanation about how everyone was ordering at once and they ran out. I thought that was the whole point of Target's website configuration of not letting you order if they are out of stock. Therefore, if they let you order, they should have the inventory. But, apparently not, so they are waiting for a new delivery from Apple...

Ironically, my nearby Targets may now have some Airs in stock, so I could cancel my online order and run around to find two but I think that would be very risky, especially today being the last day of the trade in and people are lined up today. So, I think I'll just wait and hope Apple delivers to Target so they can fill their online orders.....Patience is not one of my virtues....

I got a gift card!

Yesterday after work, I decided to drop by the target store downtown Seattle again. I had gone in on Thursday during lunch and the lady informed me she ran out of the gift cards so she took my number. Never did I get a call from her, but yesterday after work, I decided to go back there again since this store was 3 blocks from my building. I saw a gentleman working and I told him I came in to trade in my iPad since I had never got a call back from them. The guy apologized, looked at my iPad for 5 seconds and told me to keep my case. He gave me a gift card right away. It was fast. The store ran out of all iPads (which was pretty surprising for a downtown store, I was not sure what else they could be selling). I might check out an Apple bluetooth keyboard of my iPad. The gift card will expire in 2022 so I still have time to decide what to get. I am getting an iPad Air tomorrow at an Apple Store. I cannot wait.

Well, it worked out in the end. I went back to the same store as yesterday, and they had a stack of about 30 gift cards (and will undoubtedly run out before day's end). Except for the wait, it went pretty smoothly.

Some here may consider this blasphemy , but after getting my Target gift card (which will be used to offset stuff we always buy at Target), I went across the street to Best Buy and picked up a Nexus 7. I've been wanting to check out Android for a while, just to have a better comparison vs. iOS, and net $40 after taxes was the right price for what is essentially an experiment. I can say already that it's not as polished as iOS, but the multi-user thing is definitely nice… Will be interesting! :D

Cancel your Target order, buy a Visa prepaid gift card with your Target gift card, take the Visa card to an Apple Store and buy your iPad there.

I wanted to wait for a mini retina..

My son wants a Retina Mini too. I guess it depends on which store you go to. The Target we went to didn't have any Airs, so we got two $200 gift cards. I used the first one the next day, and am now waiting for Retina Mini to come out.

That being said, we also traded in some iPhone 4s for $100 each (it's in the flyer) and was able to get $179.99 iPhone 5s for only $86.99 (includes the $100 trade-in, 6.25% sales tax on some price and 5% off with Target RedCard).

I realize I could've tried selling them on eBay, but that would've been a lot of hassle, and most other trade-in places were offering a lot less than Target.

I traded in my trusty original iPad to the Target in Bethel, CT today for the $200 card.

The girl there knew what she was doing and processed my trade-in in about 60 sec although it look a little time to get through the line.

It looked like it was the same line for, e.g., activating new phones as well. Heh, all the time was spent on a family buying a Galaxy S4, which, apparently, take an extremely long time to set up.

iPad Air 64GB coming for Christmas...
