You are a wonderful example of someone who would not read the article.

Um while I agree they (artists) are entitled to compensation whenever they're music is played - you guys all blame Apple and Apple should pay up. Clearly you don't know the greed of THE MUSIC CONTENT COMAONIE

Do the Apple employees not get paid if you return the phone? Apple takes the loss.
As a person who is paid on commission, when my clients change their mind they get refunded and the company takes back my pay. So I did the work and still lose my pay. So sorry, your analogy isn't working. Most people are paid based on customer satisfaction and if customers aren't satisfied those hourly employees won't be employed for very long.

Apple has to tread lightly here. If they cover the cost of the 3 month trial by paying the labels and artists, they open themselves up to a U.S. DOJ investigation.

I believe that Spotify also does not pay the artists/labels during their free trial period. If Apple were to pay and gain access to Taylor Swift and other holdouts, they would be accused of anti-competitive behavior.

Think about it. If Apple and Spotify offer similar services, but Apple had access to more exclusive content, Spotify stands to lose many subscribers.

Thoughts?
How would that be "anti-competitive"? Offering to pay during the trial period would be a very competitive move.

It's all relative and they do have to be careful. It almost is reminiscent of the "payola" edict the DOJ put down on the music industry in the 50's when labels were "paying" radio stations to play their music. Pay for play.

This is the same but in reverse. So I agree here.

The labels themselves are very capable of paying artists during trial periods

Apple employees get paid no matter how many phones are returned. Just like any industry.

And why should musicians "lose" in order to help kickstart Apple's streaming service? If Apple wants to offer a free trial of music they don't own, they should pay the musicians to use their work. This is not about Taylor Swift, because as she says in her letter, she can support herself at this point. This is about the smaller bands and artists who are barely getting by. Asking them to devalue their work to zero for three months is unacceptable, especially coming from a company like Apple that supposedly loves music. If they love it that much, then they should support the artists, not exploit them.
That's the deal they cut. If they don't like it they should have signed with someone who would stick up for them. If they're independent, well they don't have to load their music to Apple's servers. It's the price of doing business. Again if they were actually selling music they would have no problem with this deal.

Streaming music is slowly killing the music industry with these trial periods and ad-supported "free" streams. I'm glad she decided to speak out in the open about it, now I hope more artists do the same.

These contracts are partnerships and they are both starting a business, which has costs. Why does Apple have to bear the majority of the cost of launching a new product when most of the revenues go to the artists and producers. They should share the costs of the launch and then of it's success. If the three month period is successful, then the artists will make more than they used to. If artists don't understand this business concept, then they should give up a larger percentage to apple for business building services.

I couldn't care less about apple music policy, I spend my money in concerts, where the artist get the money and music is real. I don't give a **** about tailor swift, I do care about those independent labes tried to **** up.

Apple is not apple anymore, apple now is like a good microsoft, but more closed and more capitalist than microsfot never was.

"historically progressive and generous company."

Yes, historically, but not anymore.

Somebody or somebodies wrote this for her.

It's unrealistic to ask Apple to waive the 3 month free trial after announcing it.

Never thought I'd say this but I agree with Taylor Swift. It's wrong that Apple is expecting artists to essentially make all their music free for 3 months. They should be compensated during the trial period or pull their music from it until the trial is concluded.

And Apple hourly employees are turned over just like any walmart employee. That don't hold much value. Apple fires them and hires new ones. Paying people $10/hr is no real expense to Apple.

You Apple fans are getting to a level of disgusting while supporting blindly Apple's policy. No artist told Apple to run a three months trial. If Apple decides to run three months trial to get their service undercut competition, then it's Apple's business decision. Why make the artists suffer?

If artists don't like it, then simply don't sign up for it?
They have the ultimate control.

It's not that easy physical sales are almost dead, yeah i know still count for 50% of the sales but its not that easy to find physical stuff anymore specially catalog stuff.

Come to Los Angeles. DVD's, CD's, and even Blu Rays are a thing of the past. DVD stores have nearly all closed. Streaming services like Netflix killed the rental market and people -- just like music -- don't really want to own movies anymore and let's face it the film studios don't want you to either. Trust me the labels (music) feel the same way.

Think of it this way. Downloads are to them extremely profitable in that there's zero production and distribution costs and every download gets remonetized via thin air. In fact they (labels) don't even "pay" a cent to get the download into our hands. Those costs are handled by everybody BUT them.
The disappear of optical media is just a change of storing method people are used to store digital information. That doesn't mean owning music or movie is a thing of the past. At least, for me, the only reason I refuse using streaming service is when I go offline, no streaming service will be available.

And yes, we download content and store them locally, to show others "we own the content", whether pirated or not.

A little bit off topic...

Generous? Can afford it?

We're not talking about a relative here. Apple is a company and business is business.

Why should Apple pay you to build you a paying audience? It's completely deranged that people actually think this way.

The fact that TS even uses the word generous betrays her true understanding of the situation. She knows Apple doesn't owe anyone anything here. She just thinks they should because they can afford it and it would be nice of them.

It's ridiculous and an embarrassment that anyone actually stands behind this incredibly misguided plea.

Sometimes you've got to give a little to get a lot. The music industry is no where near government assistance, and I remember Garth Brooks once indicating he had more money than he or his grand children could ever spend, so it's hard for me to have any sympathy for the music industry.

I agree everyone should be paid their fair share, but No one will end up on food stamps for the 90 days, and they will be rolling in the $$ afterwards.

Perfectly said. It's like opening up a business, you have to set your expectations that you won't start running out of the gate. Promote, free samples, to get potential customers hooked.
