Considering Apple has enough cash to completely buy the entire music industry and every song........they should eat the cost and not be giving everyone's music away for free for three months. Sure it's not gonna hurt the large artists but it's just a slimy thing to do to the smaller guys IMO. Ten years ago Apple WAS THE LITTLE GUY!

Apple is not making or losing money selling any artists' music. The iTunes store, selling apps, movies, music, and other digital content is a break even market for Apple. The iTunes store myth is that they make significant profit from it, but in truth the 30% on apps, music, etc. is to cover the costs of operating the iTunes / App stores, which exist solely to drive their hardware sales. If you were to listen to their quarterly reports or breakdown the revenue and cost from their business divisions or go through their 10-K or 10-Q at the SEC, you would see that any profit from iTunes is less than 3-4% of their total profit in any given period.

Apple makes money of hardware products. And a lot of it. Period. Any attempt to characterize it as otherwise is misinformed and misleading.

OH Please. This is from 2014. The numbers will be higher for this year probably. iTunes, apps, services are becoming a cash cow for them. So screwing artists 1/4 of a year is BIG for Apple.

No idea who that guy is but Good job Taylor! ;)
If that is true don't give Taylor the credit for that. You're quite easy to fool if you think a decision from a major corporation is changed after a day or so from an artist whining and threatening. Hey I have an igloo I can sell you. It's just perfect for these 110 degree summers. ;)

Wow you just don't get it. Math is math and the few billion is a small percentage compared to 70 billion in iPhone sales. The only reason for everything including the new iOS 9 apps are solely to drive the purchase of phones and the experience out of the box.

Are you seriously kidding yourself? Taking away that the three-month trial hurts the consumer.

Yeah keep telling yourself that.

Not even 10 minutes after I posted my comment did Apple tuck tail and reversed their decision.

Who's the smart one now? This was bound to grow into a fight that Apple would never win if they held course. Time to give credit where credit is due; thanks for making sense Taylor Swift and doing something about it.

My work here is done. Good night and I hope these Apple apologist have learned something here today.

Revenue has not been exponential but steady at best and analysts don't see it doing any serious growth according to your article. You are also quoting revenue, a large part of which is paid to the various artists, movie studios, and developers, and the gross profit will cover the expense side (remember they don't make anything distributing free content but still have a cost side there) and leave some profit, but not much. Revenue and profit are not the same thing. And with iTunes, COGS is scalable with Revenue, and their costs do increase as well. Unfortunately you can continue to make this argument, but you won't be right.

If you truly think Taylor Swift is the reason that decision was made......

But... but .... she's Taylor Swift. Now if only she called for iPhone prices to go down, that'd happen. And imagine if she called for peace in the ME. You didn't know that she has that amount of pull in the world? :O

She's full of crap. This is for her own financial gain to further her career. It's a pity that some people don't see that.
huh? she's taking her latest album off apple music.. how can that be interpreted as "This is for her own financial gain to further her career."
?

So now Apple called her bluff; what will Taylor Swift's new excuse be for not making her new album available on Apple Music?

No doubt she started this but if you don't think that other artists spoke up and Apple just bowed down to her then you're kidding yourself. I still have a feeling Apple will transfer that cost to us the consumer somehow. So while this is a win for the artist right now it might be a loss for the consumer.

She is going to make more money that way. People will listen to her on the radio, they'll want to listen to the latest and will buy it. Also, it gets her more into the press.

I guess I need to brush up on my sarcasm. :p
