Talent doesn’t rise. That’s the just world fallacy at work. The music industry is an industry first and foremost. In succeeding in an industry, talent is tertiary. Do you really think One Direction was really any more talented, either as a group or through the sum of its parts, than The Wanted, 5 Seconds of Summer, or any of the other countless girl groups that wallowed in obscurity? Or did they merely have better managers, better marketing, better producers, better branding, or just some undefinable X factor unrelated to talent? The truth is, success and talent have very little correlation. Charlatans exist and prosper in every industry. Music is no exception.
