I did always find something charming about the previous model 16GB 5th Gen iPod touch; maybe it was the silver on black that made it feel more akin to 1st through 4th Gen iPads. They were never a great deal, but they were still affordable; and at an Apple-Certified-Refurbished price of $150 a pop, they're really awesome as dev/testing devices.
Still though, I agree with everyone else; this should've been the line-up last year, let alone in 2012 when launched (and I agree, the fourth generation model should've been discontinued when the fifth generation was launched).
That all being said, them doing this at this time does pose interesting questions on (a) the future of the iPod line and (b) the immediate future of the iPod touch line (i.e. this fall).
