There's two reasons it weighs more which I think are relatively secure to state:

1/ The LTE radio
2/ The bigger battery required in order to support LTE
and a third possibility -- that Retina Display screen sure sucks power, I'm guessing.

There's only a hour difference in quoted battery life between LTE and WiFi so I doubt that's the reason. A brighter backlight for the Retina display seems like the most obvious answer.
 
It's amusing to read their comments while this teardown is happening. IFixIt is really cracking me up.
 
Well since it has the Broadcom BCM4330 does this mean we could conceivably have FM Radio in the future ?

Even the backlight itself is LED, which practically uses no power.

Remember that the first iPad used about 2 Watts per hour. This one about 4.
I think it's more the actual pixels/gpu than the backlight.

A shame they don't laminate the glass to the display a la iPhone 4/4S. Adds to the clarity & deterrence of under-glass dust bunnies. Though I guess w/ a display that size it'd be a bit unwieldy to make that happen.

I'm with ya - it's too bad. As far as laminating large displays, I believe some of Sony's more premium HDTV LCD panels use a similar process...

Yeah why don't ipod touches and iphones support fm radio? If my (former) crappy android phone can give me fm radio the iphone should be able to. I'd use it when I'm at work and don't have access to wifi. can't stream FM radio over 3G all day.

Well Tune In radio does not use much data.
 
They just confirmed the chip is samsung. Probably their 32nm process.

Any confirmation of this? It would be nice if they could pull the heat spreader off the A5X so we could get a rough estimate of its die size. Hopefully it's not 45nm, otherwise the new iPad might be burning up something other than just mobile OpenGL benchmarks :\
 
So. I was right about the memory modules.

1 GB memory in two 512MB chips.

Edit: the Toshiba chip on the A5X side of the mainboard is probably the NAND. Not sure what those chips are. Isn't the A5X RAM supposed to be on-die? Is this evidence that Apple moved the RAM off-die since they manufactured it at 45nm and ran out of room?

Not seeing the Qualcomm MDM9600 that Anandtech said would be in there. I see the Qualcomm RTR8600 multi-band/mode RF transceiver for LTE bands.

Yes, that was speculation. The RTR8600 is about a year old. No wonder they didn't put it into the iPhone 4S (it would have had a bad effect on battery life). I guess the 28nm chips weren't ready on time.
