This whole tax nomenclature is stupid. Apple runs a store and marks up the price like any other store. Telegram and others want access to Apple ‘s user base for free, plain and simple, and be allowed to profit off of it without Apple getting anything for it.

They should be careful what they wish for, as Apple can simply change the fee structure to make access more costly than today, especially for popular apps.

And you pay for boxed software from a store that also marks it up. Same thing.
This is not a fair comparison. Stores must predict how much of an item they will sell, then purchase all of it upfront. Lot's of $$ out of pocket. Items that don't sell go on "sale" and more money is lost.

Apple has the luxury of not having to pay for the goods until they are sold. Can't imagine any retail store receiving all of their merchandise for free, then able to pay as they are sold!

Sounds like jealousy. They just couldn’t do what Apple has done. Apple is the top dog and the App Store belongs to Apple only.

How about building your own platform?
This is utter codswallop because when it comes to mobile messaging, iMessage, in all its unencrypted glory, is the underdog to WhatsApp, which has a massive share of the market. I don't know a soul who doesn't use it. The same can be said for Final Cut Pro's abilities vs Adobe Premier, (at least, professionally), or iWork vs Office 365 (or even Google's offering which is used far more extensively in the real world). These Apple apps I mention have some truly wonderful attributes such as Keynote's animation and image processing, however, Apple has shot itself in the foot when trying to keep everything within their gated ecosystem.

Again, I am not arguing pricing. I am arguing against the concept to the first post I replied to, that is “Apple developed the iPhone so they have no right to complain”, or the variation “build your own smartphone”.
Of course, they have a right to whine, but that doesn't mean it should be a news story.

Actually, they don't. You can't buy Kindle books through Amazon's iOS app.

Actually, they do, just google all the antitrust lawsuits against Apple and Amazon for anticompetitive practices. They have collided for price fixing and unfair advantages over other sellers.

For example one I remember is when Apple set purchase quotas only Amazon could meet, therefore screwing over smaller retailers.

Nebulous distinction that only exists because of Amazon.
Nonsense! There's no way Apple could control the sale of physical goods through apps. If they tried to do so, retail companies would just stick to mobile versions of their websites and not bother with apps - something which isn't viable with purchased services delivered through apps.

Apple charges $99 with unlimited rights to publish as many apps to one of the most viewed app stores in the world. If an App is free (as many are) Apple could be hosting these apps for free and never see a dime from them. The 30% cut works for Apple and non revenue generating Apps soaking up floor space in the App Store.

Except Apple forbids developers from selling software to their iOS users outside of Apple's store.

Why should Apple profit from other people's efforts?

Why should others be able to freeload off of Apple’s efforts?

It really amazes me how many developers are willing to write apps with that much of a cut.

onsidering it is a much smaller cut than the old way, with a lot less upfront costs and risks, it’s easy to see why

Or are returned and the manufacturer takes the hit, depending on the store’s clout and size. in some cases, the vendor eats the mark down loss rather than take it back; other times they pay the store and the item gets trashed rather than pay the additional costs to return and store.

Ever heard of a consignment shop? Or a store that rents space and takes a cut when an item is sold? That is the App Store model.

Wow someone doesn't get it. Go to Walmart or Target right now and try to sell something without their consent, you will get escorted out of the store and if you repeat it you will get arrested for trespassing.

Right now people have options between Apple and Android. Pick which ever works best for you but you need to play by the rules both have.
And aren't the two big rules:

You need to pay the cut for digital sales inside App Store
You can sell the subs/content outside but can't direct people where to do it inside the App Store

This seems like a lot of drama over a policy that Apple has always had, to which Telegram agreed to. Telegram is free to make a mobile-friendly web version or a PWA. Users get more choice, nobody's dreams are destroyed, no developers are crushed.

Even the "Free and open web" has associated costs, like development, hosting, CDN, domain registration, payment processing. It makes little sense for people to say that Apple has some sort of obligation to offer these services for free. They're providing a really great service for very little cost. When you start charging, they ask for a revenue share. A lot of businesses use the same model.

Have you ever thought about how much it costs Apple to be Apple?

Apple's annual operating expenses for 2021 were $256.868B, a 23.36% increase from 2020

  • CEO, Tim Cook: $98,734,395 total.
  • CFO, Luca Maestri: $26.98 million total.
  • General counsel, Kate Adams: $26.97 million total.
  • SVP of retail and people, Deirdre O'Brian: $27 million total.
  • COO, Jeff Williams: $26.97 million total.

I really wish Apple would stop censoring apps. If you use Telegram you'll find that certain groups won't load on iOS due to Apple's arbitrary censorship.
Kind of odd how the Twitter iOS app is allowed to show you porn, but Telegram can't keep you up to date with local politics.

Plus for starting devs, you could make a ton more sales in the app store, and make more actual $$$ even with a cut. Even selling twice as much, you make more. Now when you made you mark, and everyone knows you, maybe sell outside then. But still most users might just watch your stuff in the App Store, and not outside.

The point is made with only 5 C Suit salaries. Timmy made $250m in 2020.
OK, and the problem with this is? He made the company billions so I think it was well worth the 250 million.

I don’t know why people get triggered by high salaries of executives. They are working with high numbers and dealing with high risk. If you’re managing billions of dollars you make millions of dollars to do it.
