The other thing that kinda gets me is that the alum pro is basically in in office machine, so it's good. The macbook goes out and about, which has a big impact on the wifi issue on the polycarb. vs the alum.

Sounds like a case of I want specific devices instead of I want a computer that does x.

If so, then the package doesn't mater or ahhh, that is all that maters, so go with what you want to do and the hell with everyone else.

This is strange. I've had my whitebook for a year and have jealously looked at every aluminum Macbook (Pro 13") I've seen…

Not that my machine isn't quality; I paid $1500 just a year ago. But the new ones look sleek.

There's a "wifi issue" with the white MacBook vs. the aluminum version? Not familiar with that.

I would say you don't need the members of an internet forum to validate/invalidate what you want to do. Figure out what's best for you and do it.

When they introduced the unibody MacBooks last year, I went to my local retailer and bought a new-in-box final-generation 2.4 GHz white MacBook at a huge discount. I saved hundreds of dollars by buying a discontinued model and I have a machine that does exactly what I need it to do.

The argument that the white MacBook "will be discontinued soon" is pointless. Apple's warranty will cover you on a new product regardless of which unit you buy.

Here's a thought: if you want the computers to look different, maybe you should consider a skin (like these) or a snap-on cover (like these): it'll be a lot cheaper than buying a new computer.

I'm most likely getting a 13" MBP even though I have the 15" for work. However in the end I'll probably get the 2.53Ghz, so technically it'd be a faster machine.

But the 2.26Ghz is great too, especially for the money.

It does seem nuts to me. If you are sure you can live with the Whitebook screen (LCD supposed to be inferior to the uniMacbook LED) and you are getting some money back with this switch, then go for it. I just wouldn't go through the trouble myself to get exactly the same performance (and the Whitebook is heavier too).

That said, I love my early 2008 blackbook, wouldn't trade it for any other laptop.

You "dual" macbook owners crack me up.

One for work, one for home, one for the beach, one for sitting on the crapper...

Which one to get? :D

If you are downgrading hoping to save some money, you'll be disappointed. No one will buy your Al-MB(P) for a decent price when the college promotion is on (free iPod touch).

go for it get the macbook, i have a black one and i love it :) also with the $$ left over you can either upgrade it or get something nice like a massive screen!

macbooks rule, the uni's are cool but still theres not so much difference in computing power between the 13 uni and the top end macbook.

They do feel nicer to use, if you want it, go for it.
Just remember resale won't be so good if you change your mind, the Alu's are seen as better by Joe Public

$1200.00 already sold. Guess it depends on your market.

The aluminium Macbooks are not for everybody.

It isn't for me either. For me, I appreciate the value of money enough so that the £150 price increase is not worth an aluminium shell (no matter how 'newer' it is than the polycarbonate, it's manufactured at the same time and I don't always have to follow the technology advances just because they were made after mine), an extra 266Mhz of RAM Speed (since 800Mhz is perfectly adequate for my own lifestyle), an extra 130Mhz of processor speed (since who is going to notice the difference between the whitebook and base Macbook Pro? Really?), the 7-hour battery life (which would be very nice, but only worth an extra £30-£50 extra in my opinion anyway, so with the other features still doesn't make it worth the upgrade unfortunately) or a multi-touch trackpad (since mainly I use an external mouse anyway, so what's the point in a trackpad with all these features which are only used occasionally?).

For my personal use, the upgrade isn't worth it. In my honest opinion, for most people's personal use, the upgrade isn't worth it.

The argument about it planning to be discontinued is pointless - nobody knows whether it will be discontinued or not, other than Apple themselves who aren't allowed to release any information beforehand (unless it's a planned announcement). They just updated the White Macbook, so who's to say they won't continue to upgrade the cheaper Macbook they have which is perfect for students on a budget?

The argument about it being 'older' than the AluMacbook is also bogus - it was updated a week or two before the switch to Macbook Pro, so unless you count 'a week or two' as old, or if you need any of the features I mentioned above, then the Whitebook is still a solid machine for you, and will save you enough money for some extra RAM (boosting it's performance further than the base alu-book for a cheaper price too, since ddr3 is much more expensive than ddr2)(and before you say 'the macbook pro can hold 8GB of RAM', if you can afford 8GB of ram then surely the £150 price increase is no issue whatsoever for you to shell out, since 8GB from crucial is around £500 anyway) or you could swap out the internal hard drive for a faster bigger one, also boosting it's performance quite a bit.

If the list of aspects I mentioned earlier don't equal £150 for you, then they don't warrant for a Macbook Pro 13-inch. The White Macbook will be perfect for a switch. Good luck on your decision :)

^ i agree plus, im a student so i cant spend money just because i dont have the newest thing this macbook has to last at least 4-5 years the following reasons i thought it would be better investment

1.Durability- i heard that the alum scratches easy and one of friends got a dent in hers. this makes me mad because i need it to handle the backpack:D plus i heard of people dropping there whitebook and how the feel on it etc and it still worked
2.Price- at the time the macbook alum was 300 bucks expensive when i cant afford i mean i already selled a f'load of stuff just to get up to 1 grand.
3.Who Cares?- so what if it doesn't have the resale value i dont plan on selling until may be 5 years later ill give it to someone who needs it. who cares if it doesnt have the nice screen, my screen is fine. who cares about multi-touch i use a mighty mouse anyways.
4. The Test Against Time-i think the white macbook is still a sexy beast compared to most modern Laptops i mean rly its less than an inch thick which amazes me considering all of the stuff inside of it and the power/speed of it.

I didn't even mention any comparisons to other laptops of similar price/spec, and you're quite right, the Macbook outshines many many many other standard laptop computers.

Well I'm a student too, and I've saved up money to get the uMBP. You make good points, but the White MBs had their fair share of issues when the new nVidia chipstes came out.
When it comes to durability, they both are weak to me. If you are in the market for something that can be tough, then by all means, go buy a toughbook by Panasonic. If not, you just be careful with your machine, buy a sleeve, make sure your backpack is well padded, and use some common sense...

I haven't had any problems with my GPU but i heard about some lines in the screen but i haven't had any of those ether. Yeah, my backpack is well padded and I take good care of it so far no major scratches since i bought it in March :)

Sorry for the long quote but I just wanted to say a refreshing and very balanced reply :)
