I agree that the iPhone's actual phone function is barely acceptable. Calls drop occasionally (yes, in great coverage areas) and the actual audio level is WAY too quiet for me on speaker-phone. I have no problems on any other phones but the iPhone's speaker is just way too quiet.

my iphone rarely drops calls, my complaint is bad call quality.

i have used other manu's phones on other networks and most were better than the iphone as phone

Poor reception, lots of, "hello, hello, you still there?" or "call me back on a real phone." Etc., etc. etc.
I've a 3G and for simple voice communication, it stinks big time.
What to do?

That is a network reception issue, not an iPhone call quality issue.

You said yourself, you used other phones on OTHER NETWORKS that were beter. That means those networks reception and coverage were better for you, not that the phones were better.

works fine for me

you may have a faulty antennae. I had that in one of my others.

then again it may just be your coverage

the only problem i've had so far with my iphone 3g is having it disconnect itself from the dock every once in a while. I'm using a dual dock that's been dremeled out to fit the 3g. i love my apple headset, it doesn't have that annoying flashing blue light that every other bt headset in the world does. and the headset battery indication on the iphone is always great.

as much as i love the many things me ipone (sic) does, and as long as i have subconsciously tolerated it, IT IS NOT MUCH OF A TELEPHONE!

Quit moaning, research other providers in your area for coverage, and get a new phone. Amazing huh?! :D

I used to have Sprint and I agree that the call "quality" is not as clear on GSM as it is on CDMA, BUT... I do get service in more places with AT&T and I drop less calls than I did with Sprint in Southern California. I much prefer a little less quality CONSISTENTLY than great quality INTERMITTENTLY.

AT&T's service just plain sucks.
It always has.
It's not the iphone's problem.

I started with Bellsouth Mobility, they changed to Cingular, and now they are ATT. I sure never asked to be a customer of that huge company that can care less abouts its customers.

I stay with them because most of my family and friends have att. So it makes sense. Having dropped calls is just something to deal with. I just hate the commericals they have. All those people must live in fantasyland.

I hope they finally upgrade the system and it does get better but ever since they took over I just see worse and worse service.

Call sound/voice quality has to do with network coverage not the phone itself...
I don't agree with that. My wife and I have the exact same coverage. She does not have an iPhone, but sound quality and reception are better on hers. She doesn't want an iPhone because she hears about me complaining about poor reception and sound quality. I love the iPhone for its convenience and utility, but the phone part could use a lot of improvement.

Hack it, dump AT&T and get T-Mobile :D

Ewwww...

The stripes show where T-Mobile customers roam on AT&T's network. Their plans are cheaper because their coverage sucks.

Sorry, but Verizon owns. :D

The sound on my calls is crystal clear in the NE area.
I dont know if you're implying that all iphones have bad sound quality thruout the world cause if that was the case I and many others wouldnt bother with using the iphone.

Yeah. Firmware 3.0 is awful when answering calls. The phone will just lock up and I'll be unable to slide to answer. One time it froze and just kept vibrating until I rebooted it.

No worries, it'll be worked out by the time of release. Its still a beta.

Mine does this and I don't have 3.0.

I did not say nor imply that.

The claim was that problems have to do with coverage and not the iPhone itself. I was disputing that.

Interesting how you when you say something negative, the fanboys come out and say "it can't be, it must be your problem." Well, I don't buy that: I call a spade a spade. I have a MacBook Pro, and it has its issues too, and in some ways (e.g. sleep is broken) is worse than a PC.

I totally agree with the OP. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone, but it can really suck as a phone. I get calls all the time that either appear as a voicemail without having rung, or sometimes show up way after the call was made. I really one this thing for my business and it definitely lets me down on the phone-front. So much so that I toyed with the idea of adding a BlackBerry to my plan to use for work. But, much to my shock, the BB's email support was horrid so I'm sticking with the iPhone.

And while the network is much to blame, I know plenty of people with 3G phones that don't have anywhere near the problems that I have.

I'm REALLY hoping that the next iteration of the iPhone is a bit better of a phone.

attitudes (small white car, applejuiced) that accept what Apple puts out there and don't knock crap performance are doing no one any favors. it's called quality control and while we don't get paid to do it, it eventually will make for better products. "live with it" stinks!

But have you used other manufacturer's phones on AT&T's network? That's the only way to tell if its the phone or the network (well, I guess using the iPhone on anther network would work as well).

Here we go again, more AT&T bashing. I have never had problems with them living in both St. Louis and Denver. However these are big cities. When will people realize that every carrier probably sucks somewhere.

I've had nothing positive to say about AT&T, the iPhone, the Blackberry Bold and their business care customer service.

I'm happy with my iPhone as a phone. It only drops calls to my boyfriend. And only when he's at his flat which is down to his carrier's bad coverage of that area.

Otherwise it's miles ahead of my last phone which was one long 15 months of call drops. (on the same network.)

Maybe theres other variable factors to consider there.
I been with AT&T for over 10 years and used tons of different phones.
I dont have bad sound when I talk to people and maybe Im lucky cause coverage around here is great. But I dont think its a phone issue, if it is you should get it checked out.
Not a fanboy at all, the iphone is my first Apple product. Im not one of those followers, just stating my experience.

You're totally going out on a limb here. There are obviously plenty of people that have no problem with call quality and some who do. Unless you've gone out and tested an iPhone with another phone in the same exact locations, you can't single out either one. But I can tell you that it's most likely coverage gaps, which happen with any phone. There are a couple of valleys on the way to work that will drop a call for me like clockwork. That's just the deal with cell towers that aren't 10,000 feet tall.

"Live with it" because that's juts how cell phones are. You're jumping between cell tower signals that don't perfectly blanket everywhere. This will probably be an issue for another decade or two until we're all implanted with our own cell radios at birth.

This is definitely not an iPhone issue. AT&T's coverage is great in Northern Virginia, but there's still dead spots. Fortunately I haven't had to drive through them since getting my 3G and haven't had a dropped call yet. The call quality is top notch, meaning I can't imagine it sounding better.

With the 1st gen I had dropped calls in the same locations as when I was using my Nokia (forgot the model) and my Razr.

The phone function of the iPhone is just as good as any other. It's the network you need to be concerned about.

But you can't use Verizon with an iPhone. Of course Verizon has the best coverage, you should be looking at coverage maps between T-Mobile and AT&T.
