FIXED and 100% perfect for the last two weeks. Replaced the home button with the one I bought off the net and it's as good as when I first got it. Works 100% every time I single or double push it.

To me, def not a software issue.

I will make note that when I first tried to re-seat my original home button, I didn't do it correctly. So maybe, just maybe, the original would work with a proper re-seating of the connector, but I'm happy as hell with the results of my replacement home button!

Link to where you purchased the replacement?

I had my phone replaced last week due to this. At first I thought it was dust but I have never been able to shake the feeling that this and the iPad do not share the same home button housing. The iPad just feels very springy and responsive as opposed to the iPhone.

I fear the 4S will have the same issue...

Looking at the teardown, there are some differences in design.

COMFIRMED:

The iPhone 4S's home button is a two piece design with the button being made into the screen. I hope this is an unacknowledged fix for the issue we've all had.

Would be nice if Apple would upgrade us to the 4S for a discounted rate. :D

I went to the apple store again last friday about the home button issue. I was prepared to do whatever at this point. Also the problem was getting easier to reproduce. Explained it to the guy there, he took it back with him (I was expecting him maybe to fix it) and he came back with a brand new phone as a replacement (not a refurb but an actual new one) He said apple stores do not give out refurbs. So I have a new phone! Great service to say the least. I did a restore on the new phone and everything is exactly as I had with the previous phone. A+ apple!

Turn the phone off. Add a couple drops of rubbing alcohol on your finger and massage into the groove of the home button for a couple minutes. Watch as the dust starts coming out of it. Let it sit for 10 minutes and repeat this process. Wait another 10 mins and turn your phone on. It should be as good as new.

Well at least this process worked for me. Used to get accidental double clicks at least 10 times a day. Now its been over a week and it hasn't happened again.

*knocks on wood*

Another voodoo technique seems to work as well. At least it's worked every time my home button is acting up.

Orienting the phone in the portrait mode, I squeeze both sides of the home button (not lightly but not too hard either) for few seconds with thumbs on left and right side of the button (not the button itself). The home button seems to respond completely fine afterwards. At least for several hours.

For people having problem with theirs, see if this works for you, or whether this is just a fluke and my black magic only works for me.

If I had the proper screw drivers, I would try tightening/loosening the bottom two screws next to the speaker/mic grills to see if that could provide a more permanent solution.

I got the extended warranty, but I do not want to get it replaced again as I think this problem will develop anew even with a new set. All my friends who have bought iPhone 4 have had issues with their home button :(.

Forget faster processors, one thing I want to see in the next iPhone is a new design for the home button!

To those who have Home button problems and don't want to exchange the phone in case of getting a refurb unit, upgrade to iOS 5. It has a Assertive Touch feature under Accessibility. It allows you to have a virtual Home button. See image.

Double tapping the Virtual Home button will bring out the multi task tray.

Woes begone!

Solution, that worked for me

Hey guys,

This might be an old thread but thought ill just share something which i did . To start off with I own an iPhone 4, which is out of warranty ( also replaced once during warranty period, for home button issue ) and again the home button is not responding as it should. So i tried the alcohol rubbing method and it was a temporary fix. I noticed that, the dust problem is mainly due to the use of screen protector ( in my opinion ). The screen protector I use has a hole slightly bigger than the home button and fits perfectly around it. When i tried the alcohol rubbing method i noticed that, the dust gets accumulated around the circumference of the hole of the screen protector around the home button. As a result when u press the home button the dust just gets in ( I'm just guessing ! I'm no expert :) )making it unresponsive. So what I did was, i removed my screen protector and cleaned the home button with alcohol. Then i cut a small strip of transparent sellotape and stuck it on the home button so that it completely covers it.

To my surprise it worked ! My button is working flawlessly and responds every time i tap it. But its slightly stiff to press the button as the tape is covering it. But hey, the button works ( for me atleast ;) ).

So i thought ill share this with you guys. Try it out ! And keep me posted.

Thanks and bye ! :)
