I have the feeling that all this hacks that makes new code work on old machines just make the program slower. I'm still at Firefox 3.6. Why is not more people?

How much RAM do you have? What's the specification of your system? OS?

I have it on two systems

G5 7,2 DP 2.0GHZ
8GB RAM
2 TB WD Black striped
9600xt card

the other is a 12" G4 1.33, 1.25GB

It's slow on both, before the 10.0 release it was plenty quick

Now I have Demeter on the G5 and we're back to Safari on the G4

Well, I'd say the main advantage, and the reason anyone who owns a PPC mac should download tenfourfox is that tenfourfox is under active development. How much longer Apple will continue to even give a lick of thought to Safari under PPC is highly, highly questionable.

I thought we already reached that point. Considering how long ago since PPC had a Safari update (5.0.6, 20th of July 2011) and Intel is on 5.1.3. I'd say thats dead as a doornail.

I want to say my G5 is on 5.1 something, but I'll look when I get back to it..

The first release of TFF 10 took a hit speed-wise. But I've just updated to 10.0.2, and it feels about on par with pre-10 versions. Javascript benchmarks on Sunspider and Dromaeo show marked improvement.

They key to getting more speed out of TFF is to install the NoScript add-on. It lets you filter out all the javascripts for ads and crud.

Thats one of the reasons I was gutted with Safari being stuck at 5.0.6 and the Javascript Block extension. Unless you had 5.1, which works well on Intel, you couldn't white list items like Youtube because of the lack of pop up menus. Overall the extension works fine.

You can always use http://homepage.mac.com/drewthaler/jsblacklist/ and add servers manually. I did it for a long time, just opened Web Inspector and looked for crap, then added it in the extension. Works great in 5.0.6

Apart from start up (and that is notoriously a Firefox thing) TFF is quite fast for me. Maybe it's beacause of extensions? What add-ons are you using?
I have installed Adblock Plus (with fanboy tracking and annoyance filters, I use GlimmerBlocker to take care of ads), Flashblock, UnPlug, DownloadHelper, OpenWith, QuicktimeEnabler, Status-4-Evar.

As for Safari (at least for Leopard users) you can try downloading Webkit builds from here:
http://code.google.com/p/leopard-webkit/
This is from one of TFF developers. He is actually trying to port Webkit 2 on Leopard.
I'm using build 535.20, and I find it much faster than regular Safari (version 1 of Peacekeeper test confirms this). There are issues with passwords (for example I cannot log-in on Macrumors when using it), but I think it is a really good companion to TFF.

Works great!! and is much faster..

I'm about to see how it likes flash

In my experience it is not as fast as TFF and Stainless with Flash.

I'm trying to understand how to use it to enhance performance on other Webkit based browsers.
It is very easy for Stainless (Preferences -> Advanced -> Load frameworks from Webkit nightly build).
For iCab there is something here:
http://www.icab.de/blog/2009/07/26/icab-running-on-webkit-nightly/
(I can't find the automator script though).

It's not...but on non-flash pages it renders quicker than the rest.

There is a new build, 535.21
It is very experimental and very fast. I find it a bit faster with flash too.

back on the computer as been away, (using a cpu power pc g4, looks like my memory is listed at512, looks also like i got a lot left of it to work with)so short of buying a new one (i want to keep this machine going, seams to be working fine anyway) i been searching around to see how i could stay current online with what i got. my efforts lead me to this, which really sounds great but now i'm trying to get this all installed with out messing up. so i got a few questions, which i'm not sure where to post so if it's ok to ask one or two here it would be much appreciated. so what i was wondering is that it sounds like t4f, merges with ff to be ran as one. my skills and use of terms are lacking, learning as i go here but does this sound like i'm thinking right here. thanks, any help is much appreciated.

btw-how is the install procedure, pretty smooth, any surprises? my machine isn't to much tricked out, don't think i got any add ons, does look like i got some out of date plug ins though (if i could say that). so little nervous as it's been a while, did any installs, don't want to loose what i got. guess i could always start over but prefer to get it right the first time.

TenFourFox is a fork of Firefox. Whereas Mozilla (the maker of Firefox) abandoned PowerPC Macs and continued to develop Firefox for Intel Macs only, Cameron Kaiser, who is the developer of TenFourFox created T4FX so that PowerPC Mac users were not left behind.

Mozilla has no involvement with TenFourFox, but TenFourFox is based of it's code that has been recompiled (rebuilt) to work on PowerPC Macs.

You can get TenFourFox here. You need to know which type of processor your Mac uses to download the correct type for your Mac.

The current version of TenFourFox (as of 1-23-2014) is TenFourFox 24.2, equivalent to Firefox 24.

What do you mean?

You download it. You unzip it, you put it in the Applications folder and then you doubleclick on the app icon to run it.

EDIT: BTW. Always best to create a new thread when faced with the prospect of resurrecting an almost two year old thread that's seriously out of date.

sorry, was asking about tenfourfox, thought a thread with tenfourfox in its title would be the place.
No worries, it's just that this thread is about 14 versions out of date. That's all. We're more than willing to help if you've got questions. :)
