N00B questions, please be kind

I finally got around to jailbreaking my iPod Touch (iOS4.0) ant the first thing I wanted to get working was a terminal app.
First I tried the one in Cydia - which didn't work at all. Then I started Googling around (had not found this thread yet).
I picked up the unstable-426 version and copied it over from my Mac using ssp. It ended up in /Volumes/root/Applications. Others seem to be putting it into /var/stash/Applications, which isn't in my PATH, and doesn't appear to be a link (alias). What's that all about?
I ssh'd into the iPod and chmod +x to Applications/Terminal.app/Terminal and rebooted the iPod.
I have an icon, and the program works = sort of.
- There doesn't seem to be any way to scroll back. The gestures sometimes work to get the keyboard to hide, but then I can't get it back. I really mis a <Tab> key and an up-arrow! There are a few useful things like ^C on the menu accessed by the (^) button, but I can't figure out how to edit that menu to add more choices. Similarly, the (i) button teases with a list of configuration options but no obvious way to change them. I can't find anything that looks like a configuration file under Terminal.app

you MUST remember, to click the checkbox at the bottom that says, "Set owner, groupls and permissions recursively". I had the same problem because I'd forgotten this VERY important step in the process, and it also did not work after several resprings. Now that I checked that after SSHing it since I got frustrated and deleted it when it didn't work, THEN realized.. I needed to do this..
...what checkbox at the bottom of what window? and what is a "respring" - same as reboot??
Thanks
