Think I know why AOD kills it for me. You guys and girls with it on, do you have your watch exposed or under a sleeve? I have noticed that it dims a lot more if under a sleeve to almost not being on. I work form home and am in a t shirt constantly so the AOD is almost as bright at the active display.
I turned off Wake Screen on Wrist Raise in Settings on the Watch. Not missing it at all now that we have AOD. As someone pointed out, the screen wakes on a tap, and I usually need the screen awake only when I have to tap anyway.

Exactly what I have done. Also done some unscientific testing:

With t shirt on and AOD (watch exposed to daylight): 5% per hour drain
With hoodie on and AOD (Watch under a sleeve most of the time): 3% per hour drain.

Only tested over 4 hours, but big difference

I noticed the same thing. I wore a long sleeve dress shirt to work and battery was about 3% drain an hour. Then next day with polo short sleeve shirt it was about 5-6% drain an hour. If anything I’ve learned since Friday is that the battery drain will vary at much great variance than S4 due to AOD. Another observation I’ve noticed is AOD during a workout really drains the battery, Im seeing 10+% every 30 minutes of a workout. And this is even after doing a repair/reset.

In my case, if I find that there is that much drainage on the battery during workouts then the watch will definitely be going back. The reason I wanted the AOD is to check my stats while working out. I don’t mine charging the watch everyday but it does have to last me all day n night and going until the next morning. I sleep with the watch on with 2 third party sleep apps on automatic.

It wont last you more to than one day (and not even a full day) and working out drains the battery like crazy with the AOD on.

If high percetnage of battery means so much to someone, you can always turn Always On display off and then it should be the same as AW4.

I don't care about "high percentage of battery" - I care about being able to go through my usual daily routine and not have to worry about my watch's battery level.

... and if achieving that means turning off the single biggest feature of the S5, then there's really no point in having upgraded from an S4. Double the storage and adding the compass are nice-to-haves but not worth hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

I’ve decided to return my Series 5. I honestly feel like this year is a beta watch and that next year Apple will have made this watch a true upgrade from the Series 4. Right now the battery is just too bad for me to deal with. I thought i was getting some improvement but as soon as I turned on the AOD again the battery went downhill fast.

Also AOD is pretty gimmicky right now. It only works in a couple of Apple apps and other apps it’s totally worthless. I also notice some lag sometimes in switching from the AOD to the regular face.

In the end I think the S5 is a great upgrade from the Series 3. But I honestly think the Series 4 is a more mature product and suits my needs much better.

I’m doing the same, packed it up this morning. I also am extremely disappointed in how dim the watch is vs the brightness of Series 4. I hate battery anxiety and S5 for how I use it makes it worse.

I will be doing the same. I already have the S4 so if I’m going to have to turn AOD off on a S5 then what am I being left with but another S4 with a compass n $400+ less in my bank account.

exactly

Yesterday I Took my S5 watch off the charger at 7am. Played a 5 hr round of golf using Golfshot gps on my watch And @ 2pm it was 40%. Put it back on the charger @ 11pm with 9% left. AOD worked pretty good with the golfshot gps app. Watch would dim, Golfshot app Blur to the background and just show the time in the top right corner. Easily readable while dimmed even in blaring sun. No need to turn or lift my wrist to check the time. It woke and showed updated GPS distances With virtually no delay. My S2 that it replaced might have been a little better...couple %soc higher at the end of the round and at the end of the day. I just got the watch Saturday and it seems to get better everyday....so we’ll see.

Took mine back. Sticking with s3. The major thing is that battery life is bad with aod on. And was already reluctant knowing the chip is dated a year already.

But also I’m not even sure I want AOD at this point. It introduces dim to bright to dim issues. Some lag. And being paranoid about what’s showing on wrist. Putting s3 back in felt like I was back to a better routine.

I’ll wait til s6 as Apple sorts this stuff out more. I don’t upgrade every year but this doesn’t seem like a good year to do that. Ideally I want to keep about 3 years. Can’t imagine the S5 being that. And this is only the 3rd year for my s3.

Newly received Apple Watch of yesterday:

7h 25 min standby
90 min „usage“
75 %

no work out. Just being at work and about 60 mins of picking music on Spotify from the watch.

40mm or 44mm? AOD on during that time? Seems like battery drainage is all over the place. At that rate, your watch will last over 28 hrs which would work for me. Other users are draining by midday

Honestly if Apple would have updated the internals of the watch where it was faster and more efficient I’d be happy to keep the 5. As it stands I’ve got essentially the exact same watch as the 4 that has an always on display that I can’t use because it kills the battery.

Don’t get me wrong; it’s beautiful and if I didn’t have a 4 I’d be keeping it. But imo anyone upgrading from a 4 should really reconsider as there are virtually no benefits and some serious downgrades with the watch.

Strangely after installing iOS 13.1 on the iPhone Pro Max, battery life on the Watch has significantly improved. Normally the watch goes into low power mode (~10% or so) when I hit midnight. Last night it had well over 35% battery remaining. I wonder if there was something in the behavior of the watch app on the phone that was polling it too often? Granted this is only one data point, but this is the first time since S5 & Pro Max that I've not gone into the red at the end of the day. Can anyone else corroborate?

Not sure what the problem is with some, but mine seems fine. I charged it on monday evening just before midnight and it lasted me through the day after and the night, woke up wednesday morning with 10%.

Right now for today:

5h 3 min standby
62 min usage

94% battery left.

watch size? AOD on throughout the whole day?

Turned off wake screen on wrist raise, the noise app and background app refresh.

Keeping AOD on and I’m am at 87% after 3.5 hours .... definitely an improvement for me but worried about when I actually start using the watch for stuff like podcasts and exercise ha
