that rattling sound IS normal. its the accelerometer. Do you know how that works? Its a moving part. Moving things rattle when put inside something and shaken

im really getting tired of all these whiney perfectionists who use up all the replacements so people with real issues have to wait for restocks

You are a fool. This is not a fine Chronograph watch that has a pendulum which would make the noise. The accelerometer is a chip that does not make any sound!

Stop whining yourself. Real issues...

Download Cuberunner. Set the phone on a flat table when starting the game and check to see if the "horizon" is even. My accelerometer was calibrated incorrectly and had a severe tilt to the left when the phone level.
A bit off-topic, but you found one issue with my iPhone 3G! I never noticed it before, but my accelerometer seems to be calibrated incorrectly. (I do play Cube Runner quite often, but I never thought about calibration.)

Other than this, I've had no issues with my iPhone. I will probably not try to exchange it.

How many other geniuses were nearby? A lot of people with appointments were waiting?

He can't back down in front of everyone by giving you a replacement, you see. Try another place or do it at a different time.

+1. This thread made me smile.

I was about to reply with the same comment before I read yours. Accelerometer is a CHIP. It does not move around, it is soldered to the main PCB.

What does "rattle" is the vibration mechanism. How do you think your phone vibrates? Electric pulses from the battery "zap" the whole case? :) Check bottom right corner: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/iPhone3G/images/D4stTvHFrlWKXF2A-large.jpg

Or check the middle top of the photo where the shiny metal part is: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/iPhone3G/images/PNwCBIOH3jfTjpVC-large.jpg

The top part of the vibration mechanism rotates and makes a sound.

OP, pay no mind to the negative comments here, i know personally how some apple employees can be dicks, when we the customers are being completely polite to them.

but hey if dust under the screen annoys you and more importantly your phone has internal rattling, you should learn to keep your cool, stand your ground, and get a replacement.

go to another apple store and just be cool, explain the situation and get your replacement.

Yeah i don't understand why people are jumping on the OP, fanboys need to realize that Apple & its employees aren't perfect.

I've found that Geniuses from flagship stores can be very annoying to deal with but it depends on the time of the day/person. I would try again...preferrably early in the morning when things aren't as busy as say at lunch time

One Genius even patronized me when i went to complain about the screen of the Hi-res PBs by saying "So what you're saying is an Apple product isn't up to your standard? because this display is perfect". Imagine that!!

If i had dusts under my screen and even more unsettling rattling noises i wouldn't 'live' with it at all.
