I'm very happy with Snow Leopard, but that screenshot naming getting on my nerves. The name is way too long on my desktop, I want to take it back to something like Picture 1.png.

I know there's a Terminal script to change the extension, but I can't find something like that for changing the file name. Any suggestions?

Hmm... Ok, I understand it could be handy for someone. Anyway, I'll wait then... :)

For those of us unable to install SL yet, what is the new naming like?

It's named Screen shot - followed by the date and time.

I like it, it's better than the old method - I don't know how many different Picture 1s I had.

I read somewhere yesterday that there is an Application called "Sharpshooter" that lets you change the names of your screenshots to whatever you want and it works on SL?
Have not tried it myself as I do not need it but maybe you would like to see if this suits your purposes.

Originally when I read about this feature I thought it was a good idea.

In reality, I think it's a lot worse than it was before:

Picture 1 and 2 don't offer much description, but they're quite easy to distinguish between.

Screen shot 2009-09-06 at 23.31.54.png and Screen shot 2009-09-06 at 23.31.58.png are harder to distinguish between.

If someone sends you a "Picture 1" from their machine (iChat, Safari, Mail, or whatever) and you already have a "Picture 1" in the same folder, you'll think different(ly) about the new naming scheme.

Obviously, I'm on the "it's a GREAT feature" team.

I don't know anyone else who has a Mac, let alone anyone would send me screenshots from one.

I'm not a fan, and here's why. The screen shots all look like they're named the same thing on my desktop. There could be better naming conventions (maybe include the frontmost app in the name), but this isn't all that hot, IMHO.

I don't think the screenshot naming works very well either. If people need to know when it was taken they can look at the creation date or metadata. The previous naming convention allowed you to easier create a named series of screenshots.

Just how many screenshots are you taking for this to matter? And why?

If screenshots were that important, then there are apps like Snapz Pro which offer more customisation.

I'm not sure about the others, but I use them very often for troubleshooting, instruction, and general assistance of friend's and family's Macs. It's easier to cmd-shift-4 and drag it to iChat, than to try and describe what it is you're talking about. Most of the time, that will be enough to take care of the question (the next step being screen sharing, and/or screen recording).
