I am a Tesla owner who thinks Elon Musk is frankly a bit of an idiot every time he opens his mouth. A lucky and forceful idiot, but an idiot nonetheless. I personally hope that his Twitter deal just makes the whole thing collapse and go away, I'd count that as Musk's greatest achievement.

That said, I love the car. The Tesla UI does most everything I want CarPlay to do, and where it falls short is not of great importance. I can see how CarPlay would be largely redundant with what is already there, which is a confusing situation for owners.

It's just a car, so none of this matters a great deal. It's just amusing.

They say that there's no such thing as bad publicity. I'm glad that this thread is up to 155 posts as I think that will help spread the word about this solution and others that compete with it. But 150 of those posts are arguments about whether a Tesla needs CarPlay.

I have a Tesla and have been through several iterations of getting a CarPlay solution. I'm really interested in this approach too and will try it out soon.

So it would be nice if the discussion was about the solution or competing solutions. But if it's 90% arguing I guess that helps the algorithm and we'll see more news in the future :D

I found out earlier in the thread that there are people adding Android tablets that let you trick an iPhone into turning on CarPlay. Then I found a more complete solution talked about in this Reddit thread:

It's an 8.8" LCD that connects to your car via Bluetooth and enables wireless CarPlay from your iPhone. Haven't seen any integrations with Teslas yet but I'd rather have an additional dedicated screen than using the browser and a Raspberry Pi.

There is a lot of "redundancy" in tech but choice can be good. Just as some may at times prefer Google Maps over Apple Maps, Gmail over Outlook, Chrome over Safari, etc. some may prefer CarPlay over Tesla's system. CarPlay or Android Auto wouldn't have to replace Tesla's existing setup, they could simply be options for those who may prefer CarPlay/AA over what Tesla offers. It also wouldn't necessarily have to be any more "confusing" than what is found with other car brands that have their own UI/setup along with CarPlay/AA as integration options.

I'm on my 3rd iteration of CarPlay for my Tesla.

First go round used the CarLinkit adapter and various Android tablets (a big phone, Kindle, a couple of Lenovo tablets). There were misc issues with each, biggest challenge was keeping the tablet / phone powered and charged. Installation wasn't too clean, same with mounting.

Second go round was a dedicated unit similar to the one you linked.

I was really happy with it at first. But after a while (and maybe an iOS update) it stopped connecting reliably. Got to the point where it almost never connected wirelessly.

Recently I bought this (if you get one use his code for a big discount)

Had it installed and running for about three months. Works great. It connects wirelessly and seamlessly just about every time I get in the car without having to think about it. On the rare occasion where it doesn't I simply reboot the unit, takes three on screen button presses and wait about 30 seconds.

Not a huge fan of it's location and could care less about the speedometer and other data it replicates in front of the driver, I leave it on CarPlay all the time.

A good evolution of the solution that me and others are using are in this long thread

I would have said the opposite, the level of borderline toxic Tesla fanboyism on display in this thread is quite breath taking.

'Tesla fanboyism' is the really lazy label used when people can't muster anything substantive.

There are many things that are legitimately mediocre in Tesla - e.g. poor headlamps - but none of them were brought up in this thread.

All it is is people with deep-seated bias and clearly zero experience riffing off some variant of 'hurr durr touchscreen bad'.

Sounds kinda like the early days when Blackberriers said that about iPhone, and anyone who disagreed was an 'Apple fanboy", doesn't it?

I wonder how many commentators here have a Tesla and have frequently used the UI? Its absolutely fine. Carplay would be nice but mainly to avoid the subscription plan that Tesla now enforce.

The data connection plan is really only useful for two things, the satellite map (with traffic visualization) and remote sentry cam view. Everything else works with phone hotspot.

Tesla UI is definitely not rubbish but I would also like the option of CarPlay, especially the latest version unveiled at WWDC 2022. Agree on the Elon sentiment wholeheartedly though, lol.
The UI is not rubbish the infotainment is rubbish - unless you want to do very very basic things. That's why CarPlay within the infotainment section (as a floating window like everything is) would be ideal - save me navigating my phone whilst I drive.

How is it rubbish?

It's just very very basic. The Spotify app just uses the Spotify API so it's not as good as the real Spotify app - for years it didn't have gapless playback and was riddled with bugs - it's better now but it still misses features.

There's no real control over your phone so for Apple music you still need to use your phone and siri to navigate to playlists - all you can do is skip tracks with basic bluetooth control.

It obviously doesn't integrate with anything Apple so if you use Apple Podcasts or Audiobooks there's no integration you need to use your phone to play and control them. There's also no other third party apps so again same thing applies for Audible.

Their maps are fine - but it would be nice to have the option of Waze as well.

I have a Plex audiobook app which runs on CarPlay but obviously not on the Tesla UI so I have to use my phone to control that.

There is calendar, phone and limited message integration in the Tesla but it's not as good as natively on the phone. CarPlay also supports WhatsApp which is a big thing for European customers.

There's also other big apps supported on CarPlay which otherwise you'd have to use your phone to control - sometimes I listen to audio on Youtube for instance and again I need to use my phone to do this, but it's available on CarPlay for others there's Tidal, Amazon Music, Overcast, BBC Sounds, News+ and others.

Tesla UI even on updated models - in terms of music streaming is a bit clunky too and you're stuck with whatever signal the car can get - there's no offline downloading of music or playlists - even if you have a memory stick in your car - so you hit a signal deadspot and you're reverting to your phone for music.

That's off the top of my head, there would be more if I sat and went through it with you.

people who think tesla software is buggy are going to love the ford, lucid, rivian, gm experience!

one is reminded of churchill's quote, "democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the other forms that have been tried"
wait til they try those ones lol even their own demo videos show a jittery ui screen and unpolished interface interactions. Rivian is the closest to Tesla for obvious reasons lol but even they said they still need a lot of work to make it smooth.
