well, gave this a shot and with three bars on the AT&T signal, registered:

0.17 Mbps (169 kbps / 21 kb/s)
Transfered 256KB in 12.4 seconds

not sure if the signal strength has much effect on this or not...

Edit:
ran it off inetworktest and got 146.6 kbps

Flattered

I would have to say I am a bigger fan of http://www.inetworktest.com, but I am probably biased as I wrote it. This new site is nice, but I can't help but feel they took some queues from the iPhone web app we had at iPhone launch. We have expanded adding custom maps of results with geolocation based on IP and have some exciting things in the pipe. Walt liked it, using a screen shot of our webapp in his iPhone 3g review.

I got 2.96Mbps through WiFi. Funny thing is, though, my full internet connection usually only runs at about 3Mbps...

Hmm... something a little wonky methinks...

Tested from my BlackBerry Pearl, on T-Mobile's EDGE network with the Opera Browser...
4.84Mbps (4838kbps/591kb/s)
Transferred 6144KB in 10.4 seconds...

Huh! Methinks maybe my EDGE connection is better than the DSL at my work? Hahaha...

EDIT:: Won't work in the BlackBerry browser... surprise surprise! Thats why I want to switch...

I do believe Opera uses Proxy servers to serve data to your browser. So the data is transferred to their servers fast, then compressed and sent to you.

This is why you shouldn't use Opera to test the speed of your phone.

Trying to get it to run on IE on my Smartphone over EDGE....I can get the test to run but then it goes to a plain white screen.

cant post my results.. read this whole thread waiting on the last 100 icon to load...

edit... ran the wifi test first, then turned off wifi and hit rerun test. apparently it was trying to run thelarger test on the phone.

after running it again, and waiting 10 minutes for it to load i closed the browser

4.86 Mbps on Wifi (Airport Extreme w/ cable)

Transfered 6464 KB in 10.9 sec

Same spot in my house (full bars on Edge)

0.16 Mbps (161 kbps / 20 Kb's)

Transfered 256 KB in 13 sec

I am ready for 3G even it it's only double. I use my iphone outside Wifi spots more than at home. Looking forward to any improvement!

Probably because of the cache on the iPhone. This happens with Java based speed tests for PCs as well, when you take them more than once in a row, it shows the speed increasing by ridiculous amounts. So your first result is the most accurate.

My results:

I have Optimum Online Boost with 30 Mbps downstream
Wi-Fi: 9.65 Mbps (With 802.11n Gigabit UltraRange Plus Linksys Wireless Router)

EDGE: ---- I don't get service in my house! DOH'

3G: ---- I couldn't make it to the AT&T store in time so I now have to wait a week! DOH'
