mine shows edge speed even with the 3G

Shows I have 3G but when I run the test it says it shows in the low 200s and says its Edge speed???? Oh well

Has anyone run a side by side test on EVDO vs 3G

Has anyone gone into ATT or Apple store and tested side by side the web browser on EVDO vs Iphone 3G to see which is faster in a metro area such as NYC? Just wondering what the real world difference is.:)

(60 miles East of San Diego; no AT&T 3G coverage)

198Kbps avg (EDGE)

Switching Wi-Fi on and using Verizon Wireless' 3G Broadband via my MacBook Pro (Internet Sharing of KPC680 ExpressCard over AirPort).

635Kbps avg

Putting Verizon KPC680 ExpresCard in a Kyocera KR1 wireless broadband router.

667Kbps avg

(BTW, this last scenario is cool because I can place the KR1 in the back of my MINI Cooper S using AUX power outlet and have mobile Wi-Fi for both iPhone and MacBook Pro when driving around town or vacation trips.)

Wifi - 5.26 Mbps Transferred 7936 KB in 12.1 Seconds

3G - 1.52 Mbps Transferred 1344 KB in 7.3 Seconds

Edge - 0.16 Mbps Transferred 256 KB in 13.4 Seconds

I'm in good old Tulsa Ok. The Wifi network I used was my own home network, for some reason I get about 1/4 of my normal network speed on the iPhone. Same as the old iPhone. My Macbook Air get's in the low 20 Mbps on my home network.

I just tried this on my iPhone 3G and my download speed was 1.07 Mbps (1068 Kbps / 130 kb/s ). Not too bad...

3G

0.95 Mbps (945kbps / 115kb/s)
Transferred 3072KB in 26.6s

I'm actually quite pleased with that! :)

Random places around Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland. All speeds are kpbs.

Processor speed matters. The iPhone is about as powerful as a 1990 desktop computer. Your Macbook Air is a 2008 computer. It's going to have an advantage, obviously.

IPhone 3G

1.56 MBPS with 3G.
1280 KB transferred in 6.7 seconds.
I knew there was a benefit to working right next to a cell tower.

I would've thought it was more powerful than that?

Typo...meant to type "1990's computer."

It's impossible to nail a direct comparision down because of all the variables, but I'd say the mid to late 90's are a good time-frame.

If you go JUST by processor speed, it's equal to the 2002 Apple laptops. But that's a little mis-leading since there are many other components to a computer than just the processor. I'm guessing that a desktop with a slightly slower processor could keep up with the iPhone because its other components are going to be built to handle more of a load.
