There aren't too many 5K displays on the market that can compete with Apple's Studio Display, but ASUS recently came out with the ASUS ProArt Display 5K, which is a solid competitor. The ProArt Display 5K features a 27-inch 5K screen with 218 pixels per inch, aka retina quality.

ASUS sells the ProArt Display 5K for $799, so it's actually half the price of the Studio Display, and much, much cheaper than the Pro Display XDR. The ProArt Display is more generic looking than Apple's monitors, so you're not getting Apple style, but if you're used to looking at a 5K Retina display and you need a second monitor, you can get that same general screen quality at a cheaper price.

In our testing, the ProArt Display 5K was color accurate, sharp, and very similar to the Studio Display. Make sure to watch our video for our full hands-on review that goes into more detail on why you might want to opt for the ProArt over Apple's options.

If you're interested in the ProArt Display, you can get it from the ASUS website or from Amazon.com.

Asus's website is so annoyingly dark and hard to read. :/

Looks like a good monitor but I really wish it had a higher refresh rate. If this had been a 5K 120Hz panel, I'd likely already have ordered one.

I like the fact that this Asus monitor does not have a built-in webcam and built-in speakers. I'd rather buy a monitor like that along with a top-of-the-line Logitech 4K webcam and Klipsch 2.1 computer speakers, which would total hundreds of dollars less than the Apple Studio Display. Why pay hundreds of dollars more for Apple's low-end built-in webcam and Apple's low-end built-in speakers?

It does have built-in speakers - but they are crap

Regarding the video: Is that a 'notch' on the display? (Which isn't visible on their website) or are you using an app or something to make that display on the monitor? Does this include a camera? It would be nice to know some details here.

I'm hoping there will be new 27" 5K and 32" 6K Studio Displays at WWDC. Depending on which one really comes, I'll buy either 2 of the 5Ks or a 6K. If I don't see new Studio Displays by then, I will probably go with the newly announced LG 6K display.

Nice display, but no Thunderbolt. I wonder if it is fully compatible with an AppleTV 4K with all frame rates.

For my Mac's I've been using an LG 34inch 21:9 non-curved 4K monitor for a few years now. It's not 218ppi, but the fact that it is 21:9 makes it very relaxed to work with. Still waiting for an OLED (or better) with 218ppi with the same dimensions. And non-curved!

Looks really nice. I think the lack of camera and mic is important to consider when comparing to the Apple Studio Display. This ASUS one would probably be totally ideal for a MacBook user, considering all that stuff is already on board -- but if you use this with a Mini and expect to do any conferencing, you'll have to add extra hardware to the mix.

edit: Yikes, just clocked the 400 nit brightness in the other comments That's like 2/3 the brightness of the ASD, and also 20% less bright than your typical 500 nit MacBook screen. Hard pass from me on that. I guess this would be a decent display for someone in a very light controlled environment, but I like to have a decent amount of light around me if possible.

Samsung has had the ViewFinity S9 5K for around this price for a while now. I have both it and an Apple Studio Display. The Samsung has some advantages over the ASUS in that it has a camera and looks nicer IMO. The speakers are horrible on it too, and it has a bunch of what I consider useless features that get in the in way. It also seems to run really warm. I've been tempted to get this ASUS but think I'm going to hold off as others have to see if Apple releases a new Studio Display soon, but might change my mind if that drags on and if ASUS starts discounting this. I love my ASD, but if I was to get another one I'd probably want it with the Nano Texture as where I'd use it would benefit from the anti-glare. That of course raises the price even more over the ASUS and Samsung. It sure looks (body) and sounds great though!

Agree on the refresh rate. Now using a display that can handle 240 Hz I’ve settled for 144 Hz in MacOS (to save some power – I also use the display in Windows for gaming) and it’s so much nicer and fluid to interact the OS with that display compared to the 60 Hz display I have at work.

It feels strange to say this, but I think I’m even willing to sacrifice some pixel density for the higher refresh rate. The display I have at home is a 16:9 at 32 inches (31.5 to be exact) and 4K, so the pixel density is nowhere near that of a 5K 16:9 at 27-inches, but the size and the refresh rate do make up for that more than I thought it would.

Would of course be nice to have 6K at 32 inches and 144 Hz or faster refresh rate. Maybe my next display in 10 years or so will have that. :)
