While I think the intent is good, why not just keep the thumbnail of the person to whom you're talking near the top of the screen where the camera is? Then you're looking at the camera anyway.

Pretty certain I was calm. It doesn't "look stupid". It looks natural. We've been using FaceTime and video calls for so long that it's normal. Although it seems like a small issue, it's just very sad that we have technology that wants to alter things to make them "perfect" (like the cameras in the Xs et al). I dread to think where this will lead.
It's just very sad that instead of embracing cool new technology we just want to come up for excuses why we shouldn't use it.

where will this end? Removal of blemishes? Removal of wrinkles? No more receding hairline? How about looking 20lbs lighter by getting rid of chubby cheeks and double chins?
Why not just let a freaking animoji do the talking while you're taking a shower?
All that and more. Its very likely it will be a digital youmoji that you have previously recorded when looking your best will be available to select and people on the other end will see this digital avatar seamlessly as you talk perfectly mimicking your features. The future is going to be lit. But also weird.

I agree this is quite creepy. My subconscious mind goes to great lengths to avoid direct eye contact in real life. Now, with the computer altering my appearance in ways I don't even realize, it's going to make people think either I like them more than I do, or that I am no where near as afraid of them as I am. What if it starts creeping them out as to how often I'm looking straight at them? I just don't know if I can deal with this kind of intimacy getting forced on me.
Your looking at it wrong lol

This is pretty impressive, I'm on video calls all the time, and yes it's annoying and I never even thought about the possibility of fixing it, well done Apple.

You’ve got it backwards. The person you’re talking to takes up the whole screen. The thumbnail is your own self.

So this method would only work if you tend to stare at your own thumbnail a lot.

I wonder if this is using the VirnetX software. Of course maybe that was all included with FaceID.

Edit: Apparently I was thinking of RealFace not VirnetX.

So much fear.
I fear for you.

What’s the official excuse for making it exclusive to iPhone XS? iPhone XR had the same front camera and array of sensors and the same CPU. Yet another marketing ploy to artificially limit some products to make others look better. I remember they once even restricted background pictures to newer iPhones…
CPU. Like the background on 3G. You could activated it with hack... but surprise it was slower. Why stress a CPU? Only if it is powerful enough to don’t care at all. Apple always let older hardware use new features if compatible and performance wise accettable, if Apple thinks it slow down or the performance are poor, it doens’t implement it. And they are right 90% of times. Like AirDrop on older Macs and go on.

It appears you're not caught up:
You can access FaceTime Attention Correction on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and 2018 iPad Pro models running the third developer beta of iOS 13. It's a setting that's available in the FaceTime section of the Settings app.
See post 23 for further clarification.

Umm, the XS and the XR have the same A12 CPU. Also the feature is available on the XR so this has all became moot anyway.

Not available on the X? Seriously Apple?
Probably requires the A12 to pull it off as the A12 has a much more powerful neural engine than the A11 found in the X.

I really hope Apple takes this further and helps me look awake for video conferences instead of having to use my awake goggles.

No no. The other poster was right. Calm down.

This is a solution in search of a problem. Now fake eyes will be staring at you all the time. Is that really better than someone just looking below the camera? You'd rather a computer simulates someone looking at you? Sad, sad times.
Lol...what an overreaction. Sad? Haha

Because the person you are talking to isn’t in a thumbnail. Your own screen is in the thumbnail.

Maybe technology isn't for you. Maybe this website isn't either, as your avatar shows your disprepect for the Apple fans on this site.

I still don’t really notice a difference. And what’s the point if they aren’t even making direct eye contact with you?
