I would have some serious cybersecurity reservations about a phone from a Chinese company accessing files on my Mac. How can we be sure that the macOS companion app is not a mole?
Sure, you have a ton of secrets on your Mac that the Chinese wants to steal… but your company allows you to use a phone you buy yourself and install software by yourself. Are you sure you know what you are talking about?

This is under the assumption that Apple, and their good display partners Samsung and LG, physically couldn’t make this phone. Which is a false assumption, of course they could.
Apple has never been the best on paper.
And what makes you assume that they could? The only information we have so far is that the iPhone doesn’t have a foldable option. The Vision Pro is a counter argument to Apple waiting for mature technology or mass market before introducing new devices. Apple intelligence shows that they are behind in key areas. Siri shows that they might never catch up even been first.

When you see this phone, you realise just how far Apple is left behind in innovation. The Chinese phone makers are just streets ahead in terms of ideas ... and quality implementation. Meanwhile, Apple just employs more lawyers and accountants in a vain effort to stifle the innovators.

Exactly. On Macrumours Comments.

1. USB-C Is great. Because no phone can be made as thin as USB-C Port. > Except Oppo said the only thing stopping them to make it thinner is the USB-C.

2. iPhone cant be made thinner, no Smartphone can. If Apple can technically made it thin they would have done it. > Do people now see it is possible to have phone below 5mm?

3. Apple cant improve battery, that is why they innovate with SoC to provide battery life improvement. > Do people now realise most of the top tier Smartphone in China has Lithium Carbon Battery?

4. Others will never be able to catch up to Apple's SoC Performance and always be 5 years ahead > Do they now see Snapdragon Elite performance.

And on and on and on.

The major problem is MR is trying to be a tech site when it isn't. MR commentators dont understand tech but presume they know tech because they read MR. Adding in a lot of Apple PR machine working. There is a difference between Apple choosing not doing it. ( Perfectly fine ), and people claiming it is technically not possible because Apple is not doing it.

How does this compare to the current oneplus open?

I am assuming this oppo phone too will be released as an oneplus at some point in time. And then available in many markets.

It's thinner, lighter, and spec'd far higher than the OP Open. OnePlus has unfortunately released an official statement that they are not releasing a foldable in 2025. The release was covered pretty heavily so you won't have to search far to find it. Not to say they won't bring it in 2026.

Yes, the Global version would be slightly superior overall, but it doesn't mean the Chinese versions don't work properly.
I think you're underselling the differences here but whatever. People can do their own research on the bands and decide for themselves.

Maybe it's just me and my disillusionment about the only type of phone I like (small) no longer being offered, but does anyone else ever think to themselves:

"Why do we even care about this so much?"

What we are actually doing with these phones is basically unchanged now for a decade.

The constant little form factor tweaks or adding a button or trimming a bezel ...

It all just feels a big pointless waste of time to keep the consumerism engine going

I would argue that the foldable form factor is a direct answer to your question precisely because it is *not* just another tweak, added button, or thinner bezel.

A foldable that's effectively the same size and weight as an iPhone 16 Pro Max is very much a different animal (even different than prior foldables, which have mostly been bricks, relatively speaking) than the incremental slabs we've grown accustomed to.

For my part, I plan to replace both my iPhone 16 Pro and iPad mini (which I mostly use as a reader) with this thing. That excites me in a pretty big way. Big enough to switch to Android.

As for consumerism? Absolutely. But that's not the end of the story by a mile.

Oh, I don’t know, the $3 trillion market value for one.
You’re thinking process that Apple doesn’t make something because they physically can’t is just off. Technically, they could make way more products than they do now, they just choose not to.
For the record I’d be very happy to see Apple make a foldable, but I am absolutely not under the delusion that they couldn’t make it right now if they wanted to. They absolutely could.
They either don’t because it would make up less than one percent of their phones sold, like Samsung currently.
Or they don’t because of the tons of compromise still required for a design like that, including with this thinnest foldable phone ever.

they just choose not to.
This needs to be emphasized. Apple is obviously an enormous company, by many measures the largest in the world. They don't release products which have no pathway to "moving the needle" on the business in a meaningful way*. They have to sell a LOT of a given product for it to matter to Apple.

Look at the iPhone Mini. They sold several million of them. Literally. It generated something like $7 billion in revenues for Apple over two years. As an individual device, it would have made Top-20 best-selling phone lists (obviously including android models).

But that was obviously too little for Apple to bother iterating it going forward.

Foldables? When Apple decides that:
1) they've solved the crease
AND
2) the device is additive in some meaningful way (e.g. allowing people to effectively carry an iPad mini with them at all times because hey look at that your iPhone unfolds!)
AND
3) they determine the best way to deploy iOS + iPadOS (or 'glow up' iOS) seamlessly on such a device

...then they'll release it. And Lordy will it be pricey.

*before you @ me about the Vision Pro, there's clearly a long-term play at hand there

In that case, this kind of product would not be for you. I don't own a Mac Pro but see no reason for Apple to NOT make them just because of my preferences.

I don't even own an iPhone. Instead, I use a cellular Mini with VOIP app and buds. IMO: all iDevice apps are better on a bigger screen. But one great advantage of iPhone vs. my "phone" as I see it myself is pocket-ablity. A fold or roll option could remedy that.
I'm right there with you (though I currently own an iPhone).

I would LOVE a device like this that is perfectly usable as a phone (and is about the same size as the current iPhones when closed!) but also folds out to (basically) and iPad Mini ... with BETTER integration with macOS than Apple currently offers!

I'm not going to buy one of these (though tempting), but I really hope this is where Apple is going with their foldable :)

Is the us at war? What kind of files do you have on your Mac that would compromise the national security of the us?

Some of these posts sound ridiculous

Please get over this racist rhetoric.

Where do you think your mac or iPhone SoC's are made and assembled from?
Where do you think the motherboard and other chips are made and assembled from?
Not India, Not Indonesia and not Taiwan.

Do about 24yrs of research please!

Oppo is NOT fully controlled by the CCCP like Huawei is.

Its a small world and economics ... your arrogance just makes it VERY small for yourself.

There was a much better version submitted to the LEGO Ideas program:

This vote is still ongoing.
The goal is to reach 10,000 supporters, then LEGO will consider it in the next round of Ideas submissions.

That one is 12 years newer taking advantage of newer pieces and techniques; those big transparent panels didn't exist back then. It is also based on current store designs while mine was based on 2010 era store designs. There were several Apple Store submitted to what is called Ideas now, some pretty bad and one or two really nice ones like a Regent Street version, but mine was the Apple Store that reached its goal.

My Apple Store also achieved 10k, but Lego decided not to pursue it due to licensing issues with Apple back in 2012. I don't know if they will choose another Apple Store but I wish them luck.

Of course mine had Steve Jobs and Woz on a Segue.

YES. The Chinese version lacks a LOT of important bands. You want the Global version. It will work well on TMo/Mint, okay on ATT, not so much on Verizon. The Chinese version will mostly stink on all 3.

Wonda hasn't had the Global version except for the like 3 minutes when they first went live with orders. Giztop doesn't (yet) sell the Global version. SO both of those sites only have the Chinese version.

AverageDad has the Global in stock as I type this. He's been in/out of stock since they started shipping and is probably your best bet if you want one now-ish in the US. That's where I ordered mine.
Thanks for the detailed reply!!

Looks like Wonda has the global with 4.2% discount with bank wire transfer.

I have no intention of jumping ship from iOS (I've been on the iPhone train since the 2007 OG iPhone and have upgraded every year since) but I'm super-intrigued by this foldable tech. I just want one to play with to see what all the fuss is about, haha!!

Maybe I missed it, but how much does it cost?
In the UK where I am, using Wonda mobile, it cost £70 more the iPhone 16 Pro Max with the same 512gb storage. There are cheaper models of both phones, of course, but the Global version with Android Auto is only available in that storage, so seemed like the best comparison.

Compared to the iPhone, it's got generally worse cameras and worse single core performance but better multi-core performance and a better GPU. The speakers are much worse and it's not dust-proof but it's got an enormous screen while being similarly compact, and obviously the multitasking functionality that brings is something that iPhones just can't compete with.

You pick your compromises either way, but I couldn't go back to a slab phone nowadays.

I don't like thinness or foldness that will hurt the battery life. It's the dumbest invention.
I get over 10 hours screen on time before I get down to 20% battery, which is roughly 4 hours more than I would use in a normal day, plus you can charge it fully in ~50 mins.

GSMArena puts the average screen on time at about 13:15 hours Vs over 17 hours for the iPhone, but then the iPhone is much slower to charge, and is powering a much smaller screen etc. If you were just doing calls, this battery would beat the iPhone by about 6 hours. Battery life depends on usage. This has a bigger capacity battery, but allows ways of using the phone that put it under more stress.
