Highly anticipated game Tetris Beat today launched on Apple Arcade, offering up classic block-stacking Tetris gameplay merged with music and rhythm mechanics.

Players are tasked with rotating and dropping Tetriminos in time with the beat in Drop mode, keeping to the rhythm to build combo chains. Those who want a more casual gameplay experience can try out Tap mode, while Tetris fans who want a traditional gameplay experience are able to use Marathon mode, which offers a selection of soundtracks.

Tetris Beat features music from a diverse set of artists including Alison Wonderland, GARZA (of Thievery Corporation), Hannah Diamond, Octo Octa, Dauwd, CINTHIE, and more. There are 18 exclusive songs that span the dance, hip hop, and pop genres, with new music set to be introduced each month.

Apple adds new games to Apple Arcade on a regular basis, and earlier this month, surpassed 200 available titles. Apple Arcade games include no in-app purchase options or ads, with the service priced at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year for the whole family.

‌Apple Arcade‌ titles can be played on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TVs, and many games are designed to support controllers, with support available for PlayStation and Xbox controllers. The service is available in more than 150 countries.

Apple Arcade subscribers can download Tetris Beat for free. [Direct Link]

I remember years ago I bought Tetris for my iPhone and played it a lot. Loved it. Then at one point it wouldn't let you play unless you were online. Tetris? Then the app eventually told me they were phasing it out and it would no longer work after a specific date, which is did eventually die. I felt pretty ripped off and ticked off. Since when does a simple game like that need an internet connection?

They undid whatever broke the purchased version. It should still be in your purchases; you should be able to download it and play again.

Note this is only for the purchased version, the free-with-ads one stayed dead.

Tell you a secret: They do not care about you as someone who plays the game. They just want your money...
Now they get it on a monthly basis and you do not even remark it is not a "standalone" game anymore.

ORLY?

Let's see if there's coverage on IGN. Hmm, Maybe Polygon? Huh. Kotaku? No... well, longshot, but maybe PC Gamer? They cover a lot of mobile games too. Nothing! Oh, I know, there must be some people on Twitch streaming themselves playing this game as it launches! ...

I wonder if Tetris Effect will ever be on mobile. It's probably the best version of Tetris I've ever played and it'd be perfect as a mobile game.
I wouldn't count on it. It's technically achievable, but not immersive at all. Tetris Effect is about being engulfed within sensory stimulation. Can't really get that level of immersion playing on a bus on a handheld phone.

EXACTLY what I was thinking. Where else has this been anticipated so highly?

Bring back Tap Tap Revenge I say!!!

Wow, what a tedious tutorial. They make you go through all three play modes, interrupt you with messages all the time, and you can’t cancel it.

Kinda lost my interest during.
I miss Tris. It didn’t need a tutorial.

Same experience with tedious tutorial. Deleted APP.

Noooo! Don't give up before you play a bit of Tap or Marathon modes… the tutorial looks bad (the game itself is sharper) and is irritating. But once you give the game a few plays it gets much more fun.

Of course it remains possible I'm "playing it wrong" 😅 This is where an  event keynote segment of a human actually playing it would come in useful, for once!
(I think I'm meant to be moving along to the beat, as I tap the iPhone 🤷‍♂️ )

Sixteen months after the cutoff date, I'm still playing Tetris! It's what helps me get to sleep at night.

I, too, deleted it halfway through the tutorial because it was so tedious and annoying. Someone said to give it a try so if I get bored enough, I'll re-download and give the actual game a try.
