My husbands iPhone wasn't alerting him when his phone was off. This is how we resolved it. In "settings" under "do not disturb" when manual in on and you shut off your phone it will not alert you. Turn manual off and you'll receive alert sounds when texted or called.

Mine has started doing this as well but for only a couple of people as far as i can tell. I set them with a custom vibration which worked fine for a few days but now i get no notification while my phone is idle. Seems to be fine when awake.

I'm trying to work a way of using a custom vibration for kik messenger only... Can't even change the tone for it!

I was having the same problem. If it's still happening when your DND settings are ok, then go to the notification centre -> messages and scroll all the way down and if alerts from contacts only is checked, then select alerts from everyone and that should do it.

DND causing no sound through lockscreen.

Worked it out with ATT Tech Support, the IPhone not sounding through the lock screen is a DND issue, to stop that from happening turn off DND totally (make all buttons white, no green ones active) I only use DND when in a meeting or something like that, this worked on my Iphone 5C, now my alarm wakes me up every time.

Alarms are actually not controlled by DND and work whether or not DND is enabled. That said, seems likE all these aspects of DND have already been discussed in this thread before.

Actually the only thing I turned off on my IPhone 5C was DND and now my alarm works, go figure.

Phone isn't on vibrate. In notifications settings messages are set to view in lock screen, show preview, tone is set to default. When a text or iMessage comes in the screen doesn't wake up nor does the text tone go off.

If I'm using the phone I see the banner and hear the alert. But if phone is locked I have no idea a message comes in unless I turn the screen on and see the alert.

What am I missing?

I figured it out!! My sisters phone was doing this go to settings> Do not disturb> Manual
Make sure manual is off and you will get notifications!

I had the same problem. The alert wouldn't come through on time or at all unless I unlocked the phone. My DND was off and the notifications for iMessages was on with "view in lock screen" on. I solved it by going to notifications, click "Sort apps: Manually" then move iMessages to the top. This makes it the most prioritized alert. This solved the problem for me, hope it works for you guys too.
Thank you. Your suggestion solved the problem. Who knows why it occurred in the first place. Apple!

I hope he has iPhone 7 now. :) Question was asked in 2012.
Peace :)

What is not funny, that Apple cannot fix that we get SMS from favorites in DND.
