Yup. That's why I bought a Dell!

Of course, the anything-but-Apple dude.

Here's an actual Dell. Notice how USB drive blocks the other usb port.

Somehow the same thumbdrive works on a Mac, without blocking other ports.

Having the ports all on one side makes them easy to access, and avoids the all too common PC-centric searching rigmarole... now I wonder where the USB port is.. left, back right or front?

It's great having ports on both sides. I can randomly reach for either side of my current thinkpad and know there is a USB port handy. Especially useful in cramped places like an airplane or something where you never know what will be in the way (i.e. guy sitting next to you's fat leg :p).

Not big enough of a nuisance for me since I don't use USB sticks much (see Dropbox or Zumodrive) and the one I do has a TINY form factor.

Spec's? That's not the issue and doesn't have anything do with this.

REAL WORLD DAY TO DAY USE is what a laptop computer should be designed for. Apple did this for 'form' not function - Fact.

Ever seen the USB humping dog thumbdrive? Obviously you haven't. - Fact.

New designer please!

.
Wow, I am in awe of the long list of oversights (failures) produced by Jony I've.

He really needs to go.

haha seriously... I cant believe someone would rather say "its easy because i know the ports are on the left" vs... I know i can plug in a usb device on EITHER side of the laptop.

I mean seriously, only 2 usb ports... and 2 very closely placed USB ports at that!! my goodness, at least make them both usable.

If you don't like the way apple does things, please feel free to buy from Dell or HP.

But for the record, squeezing ports happens on all laptops, its not just an apple problem.

Yeah 2 usb ports is kinda weak. The tradeoff is really the great battery. It takes up all the space other laptops use for things like ports, and forces the front right side of the laptop to be devoid of buttons/ports.

It will be nice when/if they finally get rid of the superdrive, should give them more space. Dunno if they will use it for ports though...doubt it actually.

I'm just unhappy because the prior MBP had a better layout. Why would apple go backwards.

Wanna trade?

This setup is a PITA for the desk docking crowd. I'd much rather have one bundle for my cables.

I've never had a problem with the layouts or thumb drives. I have a 32gb corsair that fits in nice.
I also like the fact that all the ports are on the left and not all over the place like me ****** Dell.

Can you put another USB cable next to the corsair? Maybe I'll get a corsair.

Yeah, this is stupid. I have the same problem with mine :D I was thinking of getting a USB hub-thing, though. As I sometimes need to plug in something else besides mouse and external HDD...

A lot of laptops—not just Macs—make it pretty difficult to plug large flash drives in. In fact, I've seen worse form factors in PC laptops. I used to have a Compaq Presario, and it had two USB drives arranged vertically, rather than horizontally on the MBPs. I had a harder time putting two USB ports in there than I did with any Macs. A lot of PC vendors also stick the ports *everywhere*—on that Compaq I mentioned, they stuck a bunch of ports on both the left and right, rather than just having them all on one side. I do think that the OEMs could space the USB ports better, but this definitely isn't an Apple-specific problem. (Getting a Dell isn't going to solve the problem, basically.) I do think that people see more "advantage" in PCs because PC vendors like to jam everything in. :p

I guess Steve needs to spend $100 million to buy one of every possible thumb drive in existence, and travel to the future to get new devices as well, and measure them all and make the ports spaced properly for the widest of them?

Because buying a different $25 thumb drive is out of the question?

Woa! 100 million? Time machines?

I think a drive to a local electronics shop will be more than enough to get an idea of the size of flash drives these days.

How far apart should the ports be from each other, and the other ports??? That's why there is a spec so there is a known good value. Its not Apple's fault that many USB Thumbdrive manufactures break the spec. Its the USB standard body's fault for not blasting those companies who violate the spec but still claim a USB device. I have run into this issue on many a PC, desktops and laptops alike. Buy a better thumbdrive.

Because the ports are on the left, it's a real stretch for a right handed mouse user with the corded Apple mouse too...

My netbook has one usb port on the right and two usb ports on the left. Much better for using a mouse... although, now that I think about it, it's a wireless mouse, so maybe it's not a big deal.

To the ones who defend Apple by comparing them to other companies that make useless ports, please understand that my frustration comes from the fact that Apple is taking a step back with this new design.

I'm a Mac user because Apple makes better products, I don't take comfort that Dell or Acer make equally useless ports.

Here are two pictures attached

One from my older MBP clearly showing that the port next to the USB is still accessible with the flash drive inside.

And one from the new unibody showing that both ports next to the USB port are inaccessible.

Edit: first time uploading an image, no idea why they're upside down, but you get the idea :D

But see even if Apple kept the old layout ports would still be blocked with larger USB devices like many aircards. No manufacture can make a system that will work with all USB devices if those devices are larger then the USB spec says they should be. How is this Apple's fault. Yes they reduced the space since previous models, but you have a huge thumb drive... Every body should stop blaming Dell, Apple etc... and blame the accessory makers who make huge devices that don't work well with other USB devices on many if not most computers.

Write to Apple.com/feedback about USB port gate. =p

Hum will go to Apple Store later. Might even do a story about this if my drives don't fit.

Yesterday's news. Find yourself an iBook from 2001 and take a look at the USB ports. The setup they're using now for USB has been around for almost a decade now. From iBooks, 12" Powerbooks, and MacBooks to todays unibody systems the placement of the USB ports on one side hasn't changed.

Its b/c they want you to blow a ton of money on wireless mice

And @ OP, where were you months and months ago, this is a well known issue with all sorts of articles and threads about it

That is on a 17" non-unibody though, not a unibody which op is discussing.
