I'll check to make sure it keeps the second USB port clear, if so then I'm sold! looks like a fast performing one too.

I still think Apple should do something for the next MBP, maybe go back to the older layout, front CD, ports on the left and right.

Thanks,

I think there was a reason why they moved the SuperDrive back to the sad rather than keeping it in the front and it was explained in a keynote or something and had do with space management or something. So unless Apple can build something similar to the current portables line, I don't think we'll see those changes anytime soon.

I've had problems with my fat stick.

That's what she said. Or he said...

Sometimes USB flash drives come with an extension cord, could you use that if it did come with your flash drive?

How did this thread get so huge? There is a simple fix. As iBookG4user stated, you can just use a USB extension cable, with a bendable cable. Ergo, one that will bend, and keep its shape.

Yep, and just put a case on that iPhone. What's the point of buying Apple's designs and infamous minimalistic design if we have to uglify or complicate it? Decide what you want fanboys.

As title says.

I got the new MacBook. Why are the ports so tightly packed next to each other?

I have a 32GB Kingston Data Traveler 150 USB drive

And when I put it in, I can no longer use the USB next to it or the display port.

I really hope I'm missing something here, maybe I'm not seeing it, but this killed the usability of the ports. Especially when I want to transfer something from my flash drive to my hard drive.

I can force the second USB in but I worry if that would damage the ports.

any advice?

Buy a USB hub. The cheapest ones cost about $5. Use it as basically as USB extension cord.

There isn't much room to spare in there. The battery and hard drive take up the entire front of the laptop and the dvd drive takes up the right side. The hard drive and dvd drive take up a set amount of space leaving the battery as the only thing that can give. Apparently apple decided the tradeoff between having a bigger battery and fewer / tighter USB ports was one worth making.

All that said, I've got a 17" MBP with 3 USB ports and it's really nice to have them on both sides. I'd gladly trade for the newer unibody's battery life though...

It does "just work", just not with your huge drive. That drive wouldn't work in my old dell laptop either. It is pretty common when having more than one USB port, to place them close together (either 1 above the other, or the MBP configuration).

Buy a PC next time if that drive is so critical to your computing experience.

It is not Apple's fault. You just need a smaller thumb drive.

This happens with a lot of drives. I had this issue w/ my Macbook, and still have it with my uMBP. My flash drive of choice is a Sandisk Cruzer, which is (i'll admit) a heftier-than-usual drive. I thought it was because of that. Then I plugged in my dad's Sandisk Cruzer Micro, which is an extremely common flash drive. On my macbook, it worked fine. But get this: it blocked the other USB port on my uMBP. It seems like the only drives that will fit are those tiny wafer drives.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of carrying a small flash drive (probably on a keychain)?

I love Apple products, but they frequently pick form over function and sometimes it's just frustrating. Because of this, I have to carry around a 4-port hub in my backpack
