Also (b) Apple makes more money by upcharging for the 32GB version, revenue which they wouldn't realize if they made 32GB the base model.

32 MB is the base for an imac pro. Why can't it be the base for a macbook pro? Also, put a vega 56 in there too!

Excuse the naivety, but what does it mean "if you use it"? How does one "use" ram? I'm not a power user, and I suppose added ram would increase the speed of my 15" 2017 MBP, but it's really very fast now. How fast can it get? Are there other advantages I'm not aware of?

Let's try this analogy.

You need to rent a storage locker for some stuff you have. You can get a 160 square foot locker or pay more money for a 320 square foot locker.

*ALL* the stuff you need to store takes up no more than 80 square feet.

Which storage locker makes more sense? The 160sqft or the more expensive 320sqft? You have no reason to think you'll need more than another 10-20% space before you choose your next storage locker in a few years.

Analogies can distort.

Here's my refinement.

You own a small factory. You have somewhere on the order of 5.3 -- 8 workers available. You need to purchase enough workspace to allow each of your 5.3 workers to do their jobs without being crowded out by the others.
