I am surprised so very few mentioned Powersupport crystal film considering it feels just like glass and is literally invisible...

How clear is the screen? Any downside? The amazon reviews seem mixed.

It's a bit grainy, but if you have doubts or hang ups about it then I would honestly recommend not getting it. It would be like setting yourself up for failure. Love the retina no doubt, I prefer the protection of the screen protector so that won over looks.

I've had some bad experience with certain protectors. Thus far ghost armour has done justice. As long as you are satisfied without a protector I guess. I'm the type of guy that throws a fit when a screen scratches. So I strap up.

I primarily use a screen protector on iPad and iPhone to reduce oil and fingerprints. (PowerSupport AntiGlare on eBay $13)

That said, I've scratched the screen on every iPhone that went a month without a protector.

Use Apple's Oleophobic screen

I stopped using screen protectors with the 3GS and iPhone 4. I used them only on the old 3G.

Why?

Because Apple spent a lot of money putting an oleophobic (oil fearing or oil resistant) coatings on the glass screens of the 3GS and Ip4 (both sides). They work MUCH better than any similarly coated 3rd party removable screen.

The Apple oleophobic screen minimizes oils adhering to the glass AND makes it easy to wipe off with a cloth...the 3rd party screen mostly smudge the oil around or , it it works, it doesn't last as long as the Apple screen.

So I've used a naked iphone with the Sena UltraSlim case for 1 year (3GS) and 6 months (iP4). NO scratches. I also used a bumper for a few months on the iP4 and a back case (but no front) on each...no scratches with it in my pocket (keep pocket clean).

I now use a leather case with a flip down front.

No screen means less oil problems on the phone and better response from the touch screen.

Evidently you haven't tried PowerSupport AG as they fantastically reduce oil and prints over stock Apple protectant.

You can spend more on screen protectors than you might ever lose when reselling a phone with a scratched screen. By the same token, screen protectors could be better than looking at a gouge in the actual screen that won't go away.

Pretty sure ill lose more than $2 if i get even a lightly scratched screen.

Not all people are idiots who pays $30 for a piece of film. My cheap chinese protector from DealExtreme works fine. And no, I didn't have to wet the screen and let it dry for a day before using it.

it's all about how you put the SP on. dont peel off the plastic at once. Pull the speaker piece back part first. Lineup the SP and then peel as you lay it on the screen. If you get dust under the SP, just use tape to peel up the Sp and another piece of tape underneath to pluck the dust.

This is very true. Liked my PS AG, but removed it last nite and noticed the difference once I did right away. I may put another one on later on, but I'm good without it for the time being.

Ive tried loads of different screen protectors from cheap to the more expensive ones and no matter how i tried i just couldnt get it right. That was until i ordered a caze thin case that came with a back and front protector. i gave it a go and was amazed that somehow the back protector went on perfectly with no air bubbles at all, and the front one almost perfect (i have a small airbubble at the top that i just cant remove)

i think it was just fluke that i managed to get them on almost perfectly.

The anti-glare version of PS is a different animal. It's matte finish (i.e. the anti glare feature) will minimize seeing the effect of fingerprints over the PS non-AG version. There is nothing in the coating that does that. I've used the PS clear one and have seen the AG version on others phones.

If you are willing to accept the loss in contrast and dullness of the AG, that that is great, it works for you. But that is what it does and is a fact of life. Just like the way mirror polished metal will show fingerprints over a matte finished metal.

But comparing the PS clear screen with the original Apple glass oleophobic coating...the apple original wins. Apple doesn't really recommend using a screen over the oleophobic screen...because you loss the benefit of that technology they put in place.

Some people don't see the difference. But for me the AG drives me nuts. Would never use one.

I tried. I really tried. I had one on my iPhone 3G, spent a fortune on them until I finally got one on perfect. I can't stand any defects on a screen protector install but live in a dusty old house (I even went so far as trying the steamy shower thing...boy that made me feel like a dork...) When I got my 3GS I tried a couple more times and in the end just said ***** it and got myself an sena corsa pouch, the screen was fine.

When I got the iPhone 4 i bought into all the "it's make of brittle glass and scratches easy" hysteria and once again ran around buying and trying for the perfect install...there was always on little speck of dust, or was like looking at an oilslick...today was the last straw...I tried again got it on perfect! then was holding my beautiful iPhone 4 with a front and back plastic film on it and it reminded me of sitting on my grandma's beautiful antique furniture...covered in plastic. gross.

I'm now liberated beautiful clear glass and my new Sena ultraslim for iPhone 4 and I'm sure my glass will be fine. I just can't do the OCD freaking out about the glass thing anymore.

Why don't more people use the pouches and rock a naked phone? Seem to be in a huge minority (at least on the forum). Anyone been using a pouch with naked phone since launch? How's the screen holding up?

I have the exact same problem. No matter how hard I try i always get dust underneath the SP when I install.. I am having the same debate. Any leather case suggestions?

have you tried PS? i used to have the same problem as you; when i bought protectors from wal-mart online and etc..

I went with the AG. I cant stand the oil slick on the screen all the time. Yes it does cut the clarity down a bit but I don't have to clean it every time I touch it.

I've never used screen protectors on my iPhones, and never had issues with scratches. I did get a big scratch on my iPhone 4 screen, though, and I couldn't stand it. I ended up getting a replacement a couple of months later because my phone was randomly shutting off, so I bought a PS AG. It's all right, but getting it on perfect with no dust/bubbles/etc. has been a total chore, and the screen protector drives me batty.

On the other hand, I seriously don't want another screen scratch. So I'm stuck with it.

That's why I'm done with SPs. IF I decide to get another one it be a Zagg and Best Buy will be doing the installation. I don't have the patience nor the money to keep wasting on SPs.

It was especially annoying because I'm usually a master at putting on shields and such. I've done countless Invisible Shields, BSEs, Wrapsols, etc. But getting that one little screen protector on and aligned correctly without dust is ridiculously hard.

It took me 4 shields until I had to just accept the last install.

ummm what? weird! I am the opposite. I have used a screen protector on EVERYTHING, but I watched videos of people stabbing the hell outa their iphone4 screen with scissors and other things and not 1 scratch .. so I didnt even bother getting one this time. I heard nothing but good things about the screen and figured a protector wasnt even necessary this time since I also think its a huge hastle to apply them.

hmmm! now I'm scared again! lol

Tricks? I never used any tricks- wiped the screen with a microfibre cloth, aligned the protector and stuck it on. No oil slicks, no bubbles, and definitely no specks of dust. And this is with a cheap no-name Chinese protector.

If your screen+protector looks like a couch or cabinet with a plastic cover on top, you did something massively wrong.

Either 1) Your expensive brand name protector is pointlessly difficult to use (I hear some of them need to be stuck on wet? wtf?

LMAO. The best screen protectors I've had were $1 chinese ones off ebay. The last one I got was for $20 from a store since I didnt have time to order/wait from ebay.. it came with some stupid spray bottle that you have to spray on the plastic before you apply it.. so I sprayed it.. the thing was left with these retarded spray dots EVERYWHERE. I was just like uhhhh? It massacred my screen protector.

$20 down the drain

Maybe someone over there replaced the liquid in my bottle with some kind of plastic destroyer?! lol

I had a ZAGG from launch day, not pleased with the feel or the fact that fingerprints were a pain. Just bought PS anti-glare and had the Apple guy install, it went on PERFECTLY! and so far the feel is GREAT, and minor fingerprinting.

They are pretty good at installing the shields I must say.

I'm pretty horrible at installing Screen Protectors. Anyone have any tips for installing screen protectors? I'm a perfectionist, if there is 1 bubble or dust speck it won't work for me. Or anyone have any ideas of who could install them for me? I want to pick up a SGP Oleophobic film, but I'm terrified to install it.

Practice. Buy a large pack of dirt cheap ones. They wont stay on for long, but will allow you to practice your technique.

Well, I was finally able to get a PS Anti-Glare screen protector on perfectly, and it makes a huge difference with my happiness with using a shield.

The scotch tape method + using the sticky prep tape + angling it perfectly before pulling away the backing made the difference this time around.

With no bubbles, dust, and a perfect alignment, it's nice having the peace of mind from having it on my iPhone. Good luck to everyone else.
