Wow, lots of emotions in this thread…
But have anyone considered that when the OP talks about movies he might be talking about TikTok-clips and other vertical formats? Just saying…

To me, the OP sounds as if he or she is saying, "A product exists that I do not like or need but I feel a strong urge to rant about it anyway, and to mock anyone who feels differently in order to make myself feel better in some weird way."

There are so many products in existence that I don't like or maybe just have no interest in, but I don't feel the need to run around shouting at people about how much I don't care about them.

Mainly three kinds of people need new pro:
1. Just to show off
2. Phd to do research in a cafe with massive amount of maths, no idea why do that in a cafe or somewhere that needs a laptop
3. Serious movie maker, making 8k movies but no idea why need to do that somewhere like a cafe with a laptop.

Most of the people get new pro because of reason 1 but they would never admit.
Or maybe some just like the new 14"/16" or need a bigger display, not like there's a 16" Air. In many professions high power notebooks are utilised that cost significantly more than the MBP that both companies and users profit from.

Personally I've a M1 MBP and it's fine for my needs. Should I need more, Apple has and that's not a bad thing by any means. I've worked in field engineering roles for a long time with notebooks and having such sustained performance & battery life is a very attractive asset I assure...

Little tricky to pack a desktop, display etc. into your backpack and fly hundreds of miles into the jungle.

We all have differing needs; some do, some want, some talk, no wrongs or rights. Everything flies in and out by heavy lift helicopter, no tracks, no roads, no rivers, mountainous terrain, densest jungle imaginable...

Would I like a max'd out 16" MBP absolutely yes. Do I need one no, and that's where it lies for me and I'm good with that decision...

Q-6

No need to reply the OP. Joined 2 Oct 2021, then ranting endlessly about minuscule tradeoffs.

Judging by how many negative threads about MacBook Pros by newly created account, I'm suspecting these are the staffs of a specialised division from "competitors" just to do inceptions and spread misinformations.

If I were buying right now, I would get a Pro mainly for future-proofing. I run my Mac gear for way too long.

For most people cannot feel the speed different in real life then it is really down to just the notch. I have pointed out this 14” screen is not real 14” since the left and right screen areas of notch are hard to be used. Most people cannot tell the screen quality different too. Then the real only different left for most people is just the notch.
The 14” MacBook Pro is not for most people so you’re point is rather pointless ?

Yeah I completely agree with you OP. The key to my Bugatti only has one more button on it vs. my Toyota key so it's not worth the extra 3 million.

Funny how people think people don't "need" a more powerful computer...

There are times where I find my 8gb M1 Pro virtually unusable if I'm trying to use Lightroom and do something crazy like have Firefox running in the background(BTW my 2012 pro had no issues with that).

I'm just now debating if I want to buy the 14", which I can afford now, or tough it out a bit longer until I can afford a 16"...

How many people here have actually used the new MacBook Pro? I cannot believe how much wasted screen space there is. There is a huge black bar at the top that comes down flush with the notch and pushes application windows below it. For years I have had my finder menu bar set to disappear and application windows are invisible until mouse hover. Meaning ALL APPLICATION WINDOWS CAN SIT FLUSH WITH THE VERY TOP EDGE OF THE SCREEN. Not so with the new MacBook Pros. All that space up there becomes effectively dead space that pushes application windows down below it. This eats up a lot of screen space.

I guess many people here really used the MacBook Pro. Including me. the area below the menu bar is the same 16:10 you have always had in your previous 16:10 MacBooks. You don’t lose anything. You gained.

I just come to a forum to share what I think. Air is enough for most people. The Pro doesnt even look like pro or feel like pro now. Apple just sells you a more powerful machine but most of us don’t need or can feel it.
So then buy an Air. Nobody is forcing you to buy the Pro, though you seem very insistent that others should have the same preferences you do.

Not sure OP is correct as on the 16 I think it’s 16inch below the notch and the notch is bonus. Have they gimped the 14? Is it not a true 16:10 under the notch screen?

This is how people react when you tell them the truth but they don't want to admit it.

If you can't feel the speed difference in your applications, then quite clearly, you would not be using the new MBP to its potential, and you would have paid more money than you need to.

I imagine you also can't feel much difference in a $200,000 sports car to a $20,000 car when you commuting and stuck in traffic.

I think you accidentally proved the OP’s point. Most people don’t need the performance the new MBP offers, including a lot of people here. You can’t argue that fact, and your analogy is a reflection of that. Most will never see a difference in performance past the synthetic benchmarks they run the day their new computer arrives.

This is something I'm debating. I bought the Air 1 week ago and have a new MBP on the way. I will try it out for a few days and make the decision to keep the Air or keep the MBP.
Wow I am in the same boat and wasn't sure if anyone else is dong this.

8 CPU / 7 GPU air is massive improvement over my 2020 13" MBP.
10 CPU / 16 GPU 14" MBP on the way.

Seriously considering keeping the air and canceling 14" MBP order. Only to get it cheaper next year. Not canceling because of notch.

Interesting. The extra size and weight compared to the Air and the notch may just push me to return the 16" and keep the Air. I also am not clear how much BS marketing has played into ProMotion on the MacBook Pro screen: is it ProMotion only sometimes? etc.
