ok, embarrassingly, now i'm going to sound like the mac newbie i am...

what's the reason to keep yr mac desk/laptop on/asleep all the time instead of shutting down? boot times are quick compared with pc...

I guess you could think of the question the other way around:- why would you wait 30 seconds for it to boot when you want to use it, when you could wait just 1 second for it to come out of sleep? Ditto when shutting down vs putting to sleep.

Lots of people (like me) open their Mac up perhaps 5-6 times per day eg for a quick check of the weather, or some Googling. All those 30 seconds would really add up.

Since the OS & hardware are designed to go sleep/wake in perfect safety, why not use it? Mine hasn't been rebooted for 34 days now. I expect the next time I reboot will be when the 10.6.3 software update comes out.

I went months at a time without rebooting mine. I literally just closed it and opened it when i needed it. Especially for leaving my house to go to class I just closed the lid pulled it out of my bag when I got to lecture and opened it. The amount of embarressing Windows starting sounds I hear when I go to class is hilarious. I have nothing to worry about. I think the longest I'v gone without a restart is between snow leopard updates so 3-4 months?

since we're doing the uptime thing...

my B&W G3 running Tiger just passed 101 days on Sunday - not bad for a 12 year old machine!

Our Windows 2008 R2 servers need restarting regularly at work - between 3 weeks and two months.

I barely ever restart my windows laptop. I think when you're talking about weeks/months between restarts then comparisons are fairly useless. I mean, who cares if you have to restart once a month?! It takes two minutes!

pride comes into it ;)

ok i kind of get it - but how does constantly keeping it awake/asleep (alive at least!) affect battery usage?

well my macbook will last for 10 days straight if left asleep on a full charge, so I'm going to say....... not much? :p

I don't have a macbook...but I appreciate every moment with it when given the chance. :)
